What happens when you take the best features from three different platforms and meld them all together to create something new? For Trophyline, it's the Onyx -- a fusion of the EDP, Mission and Wingman that just might result in their best platform yet.

Thanks to all of your videos, I finally ordered everything to get started one sticking. With the help of the wonderful guys at Eastern Woods Outdoors, i'm going to be modding a Trophyline Wingman when the parts arrive early next week. Being brand new to hunting at 25 years old, I'm looking forward to running my system pretty hard until the end of bow season at the end of this month and seeing what I may need to tweak for next season (hopefully I can get my first deer too). None of this would be possible for me if it weren't for your incredible, no BS, videos you put out. Can't thank you enough, Greg. You helped put another hunter out in these Ozark woods.

Thanks for the no BS review as always, Greg. Excited for the new 2023 gear! I was like you though and definitely think the angle surface area could’ve been bigger. $230 for a saddle platform is crazy.

That angled edges makes this a solid platform, maybe getting this for next season. I have the edp platform and makes it painful on the feet to lean for a period of time as you stated so I mostly sit for most of the hunt. Great review

Good morning Skaggs, I’m assuming that since you got your platform early you are somehow connected with Trophyline so I would love for you to get in touch with them. I got my Onyx yesterday and much to my disappointment I had to work on it right out of the box! The issue is that the platform doesn’t want to hinge open!! I loosened the nylox nut…still couldn’t open. Then I had to back the through bolt out with a wrench which indicated that something wasn’t in alignment. After backing the bolt out I found that one of the plastic washers was dented where the bolt had been driven through. I smoothed out the washer and put it all back together and it opened a bit better but it’s still pretty stiff. So I called Trophyline to report the issue and the response I got was, “Yeah we know it’s stiff. We made it that way so it wouldn’t be too loose over time. Just open it up 3-4 times and it will be fine. If you can’t get it open let us know and we’ll send you a return ticket and send you a replacement.” I don’t know? I’m calling BS on the idea that you engineered a product to open hard when the product is designed to bite the tree when open! I think it’s simply a quality control issue and the production team should be held accountable. I hope it works better on the tree than it has on work bench!

Nice review on the platform. Have you tried a stiffer boot? Kenetrek boots have an ultra-stiff midsole which will prevent you from feeling the edge. You can literally stand on a golf ball and not feel it. Plus, these boots have a rocker sole making them very easy to walk in and are very comfortable and supportive.

Staggs! I have a seeker right now that’s really comfy with the angled front. With that said it can never seem to be super solid on the tree with side pressure, no matter what I do. Is this a good alternative and is the angle as comfy as the seeker. I have the same concerns as many others with the surface area of the angles not being very large.
@StaggsintheWild
@StaggsintheWild Месяц назад
@@EasternWild two things: first, Cruzr received a bad batch of cam straps at one point that stretched and didn’t allow for a rock-solid attachment; that may be what’s going on with yours. I’d recommend reaching out to them first. Secondly, the Onyx is a nice platform but it’s made to be sort of a “catch-all, general purpose” platform. The Seeker is MUCH more built with a true leaner in mind.
@EasternWild
@EasternWild Месяц назад
@@StaggsintheWild I had heard about the straps. I just bought it beginning of last season though so I don’t know if I were affected or not. Thx for the reply!

I was going to order the onyx but was sold out while sitting in my basket, so I ordered the edp. The edp is being delivered today, but trophyline has the onyx back in stock. They will take the edp back and send me a prepaid shipping label. In your opinion, is the onyx a better platform over all compared to the edp? I will be putting it next to my one stick platform. Thank you for any advice and your time.

@StaggsintheWild I am just getting into saddle hunting. Own 1400 acres, which have used ladder stands and climbers. Have some back issues. I feel I will do the majority of the time leaning. May sit once in a while just to change positions.
@StaggsintheWild

@@russbrown9286 I’d probably recommend the Onyx more so then … that rounded edge is going to give you a lot less harsh four experience.

The Onyx is about the same size as the Tethrd Predator XL ? The XL is as large I want to carry. The flat Predator edges are hard on my feet. I’m leaning toward the Onyx thanks to those angled edges.
@StaggsintheWild
@StaggsintheWild Год назад
It's SLIGHTLY bigger than the Predator XL... Tethrd's largest platform is 13 x 13. The Onyx is 13 x 14.9 and half a pound heavier (4 lbs vs. 4.5)

Thanks for the reply , sure wish the regular size Predator had the angled side feature , the original Predator is my favorite for carry and pack size , you are absolutely spot on about flat sides and foot issues, I am constantly adjusting my feet due to the non angled edge

I have both the mission and the EDP, I find myself primarily using my EDP. I have zero complaints with it other than the hump on the back side. I just don't know that the Onyx, does enough for me to change. What are your thoughts, is it worth an upgrade?
@StaggsintheWild
@StaggsintheWild Год назад
I think the Onyx offers slight advantages over the EDP just coming from a leaner's perspective. If I was able to sell the EDP for almost retail value, I'd consider upgrading. If NOT, then you're not missing out a TON. If I were starting from scratch I'd go right off the bat with the Onyx -- but I'd probably only upgrade if I could get most of my money back -- which as you know, usually isn't hard in the saddle-hunting world. :)

@@StaggsintheWild would you get the Seeker/mini seeker or this for an all around starter. I lean primarily
@StaggsintheWild
@StaggsintheWild Год назад
@@paytenblevins3401 there’s really no wrong choice here … I do like the size of the mini Seeker vs the original. Both the mini Seeker and the Onyx have their own set of strengths: the Onyx is probably the most solid mid-sized platform I’ve ever strapped to a tree, even slightly more so than the EDP if that’s possible. I do like the larger surface area for placing my feet on in the leaning position on the mini Seeker.

If you had to choose between this or a mini seeker which would you prefer?
@StaggsintheWild
@StaggsintheWild Год назад
Man, it’s a tough question. I love the fact that the Onyx is angled on all three sides, but I like the extra surface area of the actual angled portion on the mini -Seeker. I think I’d pick the mini-Seeker for shorter run & gun hunts where I had the possibility of going a couple miles deep on a whim … and the Onyx if I was more likely to be hunting known trees where I might put in longer sits.

@StaggsintheWild
@StaggsintheWild 7 месяцев назад
I’d never try to use this to climb with - at least not to turn into a one-stick. Trophyline’s Wingman is much better suited for turning a “platform” into a one-sticking stick. But having said that, I wouldn’t waste my time … I’d just buy an EWO Ultimate One Stick from the start and be done with it.

How would you compare to the Tethrd Predator XL?
@StaggsintheWild
@StaggsintheWild Год назад
The predator XL is completely flat... to allow for any comfort as a leaner, you'd have to angle the entire platform down -- which to its credit Tethrd built in WAY more adjustability to do so than Trophyline did. It's lighter overall (I'd have to go back and compare weights, but it feels like it...) but the Trophyline feels MUCH more solid.
