Trotting a float on the River Brue

My first fishing trip of 2024 - Winter trotting on the River Brue at Lydford, in Somerset. A lovely Christmas and New Year period dedicated to family makes this session the first for a few weeks and it’s great to be back next to water.
Although the fish aren’t notably big, the winter setting is stunning and the river hosts a good variety of coarse fish species, as well as the odd rogue brown trout.
There’s someone mesmerising and therapeutic about trotting a float down the river. Reading the currents and managing the rod, line and speed of drift. It all keeps the mind focused. My friend Harry is very much a river man and watching him control the float and chatting fish again is an absolute pleasure.

i love the fishing in rivers compared to lakes, feels cozy that all the fish are packed in a smaller area and that they cant hide from the bait hahah

Nice video. It's always fun to fish those small rivers.

Thanks ☺️ . They are! I also find these small rivers comforting. They offer shelter from the weather and are the perfect escape from other people.

great sport Charlie. There's an remarkably similar lowland stream not far from my place, it was hit by a serious slurry pollution 2 years ago, rumour was that the entire stock was wiped out. I ought to have a visit to see if there's any recovery in the stock. used to be a bite a chuck for nice silvers. Inspiring video👍👍👍

Thanks David. Helped blow away the cobwebs after the Christmas and NY break with family. Sorry to hear about the all too familiar pollution incident. Another river near to this one called the Sheppey had a serious slurry incident but the fish bounced back surprisingly quickly, thankfully.

Good to see the small trout, shows they’re breeding well. I fly fish a stretch a few miles upstream which holds some good trout but I’ve also had some serious trout on the club water on the fly.

Yes, very nice to see. I’ve heard rumours of some real lumps in that river.

@@jamslockyer wow! Would love to catch a wild fish of that size on a fly. Been fishing the Frome on Dorchester Fishing Club and spotted one or two approaching that size but they’re very good at seeing me first!

Best form of fishing altho i am 95% lure based these days. Still float fish from time to time and the chub are very active since the (last) floods.

Didn’t know you had it in you! Good fun, isn’t it. I heard the chap at Premier Angling saying the chub fishing had been good. Do you think you’ll be giving it a go before end of season? I used to only lure and fly fish, but love the trotting in depths of winter. Helps me mentally to be honest. I find lure fishing needs a level of resolve that I sometimes lack at this time of year.

Lovely video. Thank you. Are the 2lb+ roach still in the Brue?

Thanks ☺️. I’ve not heard of any being caught recently but I remember hearing about a 3lb roach and vaguely remember seeing a picture. It’s such good habitat for them, I’m guessing there’s still got to be some lumps in there. So many fish, it’s difficult to target the better ones without being ragged. Maggot, caster, worm, bread and meat all get ravaged the moment they hit the water. Perhaps 6mm tares, corn or mini boilies would be worth a go. If I go for the chub again, I’ll definitely be scaling down in the hope of a bonus roach. Thanks for commenting btw - takes a while to make them so it’s really appreciated.
