Wudja believe this failed trim tab got past the marine surveyor? Now in the boat yard (and painted) I arrived and asked to confirm they work properly. Well, you see the answer. Learn more about marine surveys here, www.captainchr...
Captain Chris, I have exactly the same problem with this on my boat with the same Volvo Penta Tabs and switch setup... did you isolate what the problem was eventually and how did u fix it ?
Great Videos first to comment have not seen this setup before! What is the benefit over standard trim tabs looks like would be easy to jam up with debris thanx smokeywilson
Alabama Smokey Wilson yes they are easy to jam up with barnacles and growth. And, a sloppy anti-fouling paint job can glue it closed. The port one had to be replaced on this boat.
I saw them for the first time last summer in a guest harbor where the neighbor boat had such tabs. The ones we see here are maybe of some other brand, the ones I saw was from Swedish Humphree: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-UlB67fa567c.html I have hard to understand how but the salesman says they make less resistance than the old type of tabs. The Humphree tabs act much faster than we see here and work constantly and individually to reduce rolling. Zipwake is another brand that looks very much the same: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ohQql4EGdKQ.html I have standard tabs but I never use them, it feels like my boat looses too much stability with trim tabs down.
We've got to solve the riddle of that plastic thing in the middle of the transom. A wild idea is that it's some cathodic corrosion protection device. It looks like it's got a couple of lugs for electrical cables. Unfortunately, googling that gives nothing that looks similar.
skunkjobb riddle solved. The light grey plastic box is the ACP- automatic Corrosion Protection. This is part of the Volvo IPS system to prevent corrosion on the pods. Note the zinc is not installed yet on the ACP.
@@AskCaptainChris I knew it! Well, at least I guessed correctly then. I can't find many pictures of that system but here's one and it sure is what you say: www.volvopentashop.com/epc/en-US/Details/PentaPartsCatalog/47702000_022?path=MarineDrivesAndTransmissions%2F47702000%2F47702000_44%2F47702000_022 The screws are not for cables but to place a standard zinc anode as a backup if the power to the ACP fails.
Very interesting and not very common. I agree with you and smokey - I do not like at all. I guess with all the marine surveyor misses that you catch, I would be very careful with selecting a marine surveyor. One Name that is Know is Steve D'Antonio - he writes a lot of very good columns and I read a survey that he did on a 120 Nordhaven that shocked me.. Does Captain Chris do marine surveys ?
Robert Frost I will attend a survey as your captain to explain and interpret what the surveyor is doing/not doing. I will collaborate with the surveyor on your behalf, making recommendations as I see items of concern. I am not a surveyor because I choose the teaching aspect of boating. I have attended many surveys with clients- and helped them to identify items of concern. I have also come AFTER the survey is completed and that’s where many of these missed items are shared with you in a teaching format.
Ray M as is many things boating today. And if we all understood how it ALL works many would be amazed. 😎 Find your joy and the level at which you’d like to participate. We can certainly get you started on this adventure.
