TROUBLE WITH SOPHIE - EP10 - The cruel stepmother
Fedora Fichini organises a splendid party to celebrate her marriage to Mr de Rean. Sophie prefers to stay with Jim and the cotton pickers in a tree house. This is where she hides from her new stepmother her gradually reveals her true character, becoming more and more cruel to Sophie. Weakened by sickness, Mr de Rean doesn't seem to notice what's going on. When he finally understands that his wife is mistreating his daughter, Fedora is filled with rage. Mr de Rean has just enough time to ask for her forgiveness before dying. MaVone comforts poor Sophie but unfortunately when it is time to return to France with her nasty stepmother, MaVone does not come.

I've never realised all the foreshadowing in this show. First the sinking boat when Sophie put too many rocks on it, then the husband figuring falling representing the dad's death

Yes, even in episode 1 at the end Sophie falls down and madam de Flerveile runs to Sophie to see if she was okay not her mother, that was also foreshadowing. In episode 7 when they are about to leave their house Sophie says to Camille and Madialin "I hope we run into a storm"... there is so much foreshadowing.

Madam de Reon was strict but it was because she loved Sophie and wanted her to grow up for be a proper lady. But she did a lot of stuff for her daughter like fixed her doll and make her a handkerchief. Plus took care of her when she was sick. That is motherly love.

Actually, in the book, Mme. De Rean does whip Sophie “like she had never been whipped before” as punishment for stealing the contents of her sewing box. She also considers doing it to her when she discovers Sophie had disobeyed her by stepping in the quicklime.

You actually see Sophie drawn differently over time to show she’s older, and she’s also drawn taller. If you watch the first 8(?) episodes she’s much chubbier and smaller. The same’s with her father, he’s drawn thinner and thinner after coming to America.

You can tell with her voice as well. It ages pretty accurately. I realized it’s the same for camilies and madeleines voice as well

La bonne est génial, quand elle dit cet homme là ne voit vraiment rien. La moral derriére c'est vraiment pour dire, que il y a des choses qui ce voit a des kilométres. Insupportable cette veille, toujours énervé, si il avait au moin voulu, ce donner la peine d'attendre un peux. Il aurait pu rencontrait une dame, a l'image de Madame de Fleurville.

When I had to do a science project, my teacher gave us a scientists and when I looked at one of them, it's looked exactly like Sophie except older! So I think Sophie is based on her.

madame ficchini reminds me of abby lee from dance moms. shes overweight, loves food, treats her dog like a baby and treats children poorly.

Madame Fichini was still a legal guardian for poor Sophie even though she abused Sophie as there were no child protection law yet. This cartoon was in 1850-1870 situation as child protection law only came in 1890-1900.But after 2000,emotional abuse started to become common. So, in my opinion, the period from 1910-1990 was golden period of child rearing as helicopter parenting increased in 1990s and emotional abuse started to increase after 2000s.
