Students like Katie are the reason so many teachers quit teaching or think of quitting most weeks. Students who aren't like Katie are the reason they continue. Most teachers just want to show up, deliver their lessons and help a bunch of kids understand some difficult concepts and perform to their best. They're not interested in, did not sign up for and are not tooled up to deal with Katies. And the Katie you see here is largely a UK (if not greater European) problem. You never get kids behaving like that in Japan for example where there seems to be more ingrained respect for everyone else around you. It's a symptom of a broken system which nobody seems to even want to fix.

TS Krazoxk I think she already has confidence and accepts herself because she seems very sure with herself and is stubborn and decisive. People who struggle with low self esteem are usually indecisive. She isn’t like that. She knows what she wants, is stubborn and comes across as more of a leader rather than a follower. She isn’t co dependent on others or needs others to reassure her, which is why I also think she already has confidence
@its_eva
@its_eva 4 года назад
Molly S yeah but this is a different kind of confidence, I think that you can tell she doesn’t actually believe in herself but she uses “confidence” as a cover to hide her insecurities and act like she is ok, she gives off a vibe of being so confident because she backchats, messes about in class etc but that doesn’t necessarily mean she IS confident, like another comment pointed out she messes about so she can get attention from her peers so she feels valued since she doesn’t get a lot of that at home

Had a teacher like this. My guitar teacher. The most inspirational, loving and most badass guitar player and role model to the kids in our school. He was honestly just such a great man and he taught me to have confidence in my playing which lead to me to soar and advance so far. He said i was one of few he thought were gonna be a proper player. I remember when he said that. The last talk we had was before quarantine, he was saying stuff about my confidence and we were gonna have one more lesson together but i didn't come to school on the last day. He caught coronavirus and with him having underlying health problems, he was one of the first few to pass away in my town. It still hasn't sunk in for me yet and i refuse to believe it. But that feeling comes in every now and then and awh man is it saddening. 🙁🙁

How was she trying to be better when she was clearly disrupting the class? Teachers only tell you off when you are doing something wrong, and she WAS. They aren’t having a go at her on purpose. Molly S a lot of children tend to act out to try to gain attention that they don’t get at home. I’ve worked with troubled kids before and sometimes you have to notice that they are acting out for a reason. The best thing to do is help them find something they like, and let them work on that each day. It really does make a difference in their behavior
@rebeccaeverett8957

Chloe Harrison yes children do act out to get attention. That’s true, but that doesn’t mean they should get away with bad behaviour. I agree the best thing to do is help them find something they like, so they can put their focus onto something good. However when they are misbehaving, they still need to be corrected and told when they are wrong. Tell them when their behaviour is not acceptable, and then find ways to improve.

i cried at her performance honestly. as someone who had a similar experience with teachers in school, feeling like I could never get anything right, having so much pent up emotion, like I couldn’t escape being what they thought I was. A “bad” kid or whatever. It’s really the worst thing to make a kid think those things about themselves. I still struggle a lot thinking about how unfairly I was treated when I was younger, and it’s nice to keep in mind how much authority adults have over kids. Everyone has gotta sugarcoat things and be like “awww she needs love” etc. I mean yes...but she also needs discipline!! Kids need rules and discipline. So many people in the comments don’t realise this. (Although a lot of comments are from kids themselves anyway. lol).
@becca_rose_x

The Spires College Tribute EXACTLY!! That was perfectly said!!! Not having boundaries really does cause confusion. She needs to learn when she is wrong. And yes giving her attention and love is only feeding into it! It’s only feeding into it and giving her what she wants, and the more you feed into something, the more they will do it again and again. This is why you should ignore them. I even saw this technique when watched supernanny on tv!! It’s called the naughty step/ naughty corner. The point of it is to remove them out the way and ignore them. By ignoring them, you are not giving into the attention they are trying to get. Kids and teenagers will test you. They test you on how far they can push. This is why it’s important to not give in and feed into it. People in these comments (mainly from kids) don’t realise and don’t understand because they have never worked with kids or studied about it. They are just going from their emotional response instead of thinking sensibly and rationally. I have been insulted and called all sorts of names in this comment section from kids who really do not understand. 😂 God..I am really not looking forward to this generation when they have kids...! From what I have noticed, a lot of people in this generation have become so soft and sensitive. 🙄 Discipline is an important tool right from an early age in order for them to grow and learn from things they have done wrong, and like you said...without it, it causes confusion which can manifest into anger and aggression. kids need to know when they have done something wrong.

*important info that nobody is even acknowledging* people are saying that the girl in the video might have anxiety and that she is hurting, and has problems going on, but when they are filming the programme, the kids with bigger roles (such as Katie) they are assessed by a psychologist, and they advise the team whether they are suitable for the process, and whether they are robust enough and strong enough to handle stuff. So if she was REALLY struggling, they would not of filmed her. They also go round to their house, have to get permission from parents, also given forms and letters. If she wasn’t mentally fit enough, they wouldn’t have filmed her

Yes they can. They are adults who have taught for years and so they have "been through" the teenage years a number of times, including their own. Students need to help themselves if the help they are offered is going to be of any benefit. Life is about learning to fit in and adapting to a range of situations and that requires a whole range of skills. That is why the years at school are both long and important. It is not just "Me", teenagers need to learn about and appreciate the impact that their behaviour has on others. Each student is responsible for one person at school, themselves. Teachers have more levels of responsibility for more students for longer periods of time. That is why students must listen to what the experienced teachers say. This is not just an opinion, this is from my 33 years as a secondary school teacher with the last 30 of those in the same school. Trying to teach teenagers can be both the best and worst job in the World on the same day.

To be quite honest, schools are limited in what they can do!! They aren’t there to constantly correct a student’s behaviour and constantly have to babysit them like little kids. Like cmon...they are in high school now. It’s not really a teacher’s responsibility to be constantly correcting behaviour and be a behavioural therapist. They are there to teach!!! Isolation may not be beneficial for the student, but it’s beneficial for the teachers and the rest of the class. It’s to remove the “problem” out of the room. Sorry but it’s the truth. If that student constantly wants to disrupt the class, sometimes the best thing to do is to remove them so everyone else has a chance to learn in the peace. Teachers are limited in what they can do, they are there to teach and to get kids an education, not to constantly get in disagreements, arguments and chaos with a student. It’s not fair on the rest of the class because of them. That is why schools use isolation. If a student carries on disrupting the class it’s best to remove them from mainstream school. Mainstream schools just don’t have the time

The teacher does not need to talk in a calm voice, in fact that can make the matter worse for in the long term. It’s proven. Learnt it in child care. Right from an early age, when a child misbehaves, you have to talk in a strict firm voice- that way they know they are in trouble. If you talk calm and keep everything sweet- they aren’t going to take you seriously, and therefore the discipline becomes misunderstood and misleading. This is something that carries on through teen years. It is something that carries on throughout the years of life. This is why we know our right from wrongs, and when someone is happy with us, or angry with us. Now bringing this back to this situation, the teacher in the video did not shout, yell or get angry. So don’t exaggerate. All he did was talk in a firm strict way, which was correct.

I cried when she talked about losing her grandma. I know the teachers think they're doing the best for their students but I do question some of their practices, like isolation. Is it a school or a prison? Disruptive students need support, not punishment. Katie is a good example. She had a tough home life with divorced parents. It's obvious that she doesn't get enough affection or attention from her parents. I suspect she feels really misunderstood and ignored at home, only to go to school and be shouted at and punished by adults. I think with lots of positive reinforcement she could do really great in school. I wonder if the school has a counsellor on hand? Compassion, not punishment is the answer.

According to the world population studies, approximately 108 billion people have lived on this planet. Assuming that the average lifespan of all these people was 25, there has been around 2.7 trillion years of life, if we multiply this by the amount of days in a year (365) there is a total of 985,500,000,000,000 days of life (985.5 trillion days). Not once in any of those days did anybody ask.
@amed9476
@amed9476 4 года назад
Yeah, Katy didn't really seem to be benefitting from the isolation room at all. I'm sure some students would because they would appreciate a bit of personal space to calm down, but if it doesn't work for a student, a new strategy would be good to try. Honestly the setup looks like it would be really conducive for personal study instead. But regarding the "support rather than punishment" comment, I kind of disagree. They need support AND consequences. You can't have a student being disruptive in the class all the time because then other students are not getting the support they need. At the same time it's really important to understand the home life of a student and what that student may be facing. I think all children need teachers to be lenient sometimes, but even students with a difficult homelife are sometimes playing up not because of that, but because they are children.

Shinae Taylor sadly you aren’t aware how depleted our schools are. We don’t have enough teachers because people like you expects teachers to do everything when it’s not possible. Teachers don’t only teach they have a ton of other paper work that they need to do, many work 7am-7pm 5 days a week without extra pay. Kids these days don’t have the respect for teachers like it once was. Isolation has its drawbacks and positive. Kids need to realise that the teachers are top of the hierarchy, isolation is a punishment for not following the rules. I’m sorry to say but the 5% who don’t want to learn are not more important Than the 95% that do. If putting the 5% in isolation helps the 95%, than that’s what they should do.
@laundrybasket5613
@laundrybasket5613 4 года назад
musa ahmed However, as a school it is their job to have the support from staff, such as mentors, in order to help these children become better people, which is one of the leading goals in a school. I do agree there must be consequences in place, so they are told that their actions will indeed negatively affect them. Yet, there must be ways put in place that can help those children who really need that assistance. It isn’t always 5% to 95%, if we’re talking about schools which have children from areas that are poorer and are more commonly experiencing issues in their lives like their parents divorce, relationship issues, bullying and self esteem, where are they supposed to have those children go? Some don’t have the access, nor would they trust outside sources to seek this help because they might not be comfortable, but a lot of children could benefit greatly from even just compassion within a school system. I’m not saying they need to dedicate all their time towards these causes. They do indeed have hectic schedules like you have mentioned, but that is not an excuse for them not to treat these children like people, and respect and care for their surroundings and circumstances. Your role as a teacher does include enforcing rules and teaching these kids respect, but at the same time if you don’t enforce it with a better atmosphere it can cause worse than the good intended. Discussing about the ‘top of the hierarchy’, this can also be a factor to children rebelling. I’ve moved schools a few months ago, and they have rules in place in order for teachers to treat students with respect and like equals. This doesn’t mean all rules for order, such as detentions or isolations are completely eradicated, but rather the teachers are much more understanding and try to understand you and your situation rather than sending you there immediately. It’s such a better atmosphere here, and you can feel the students and teachers connect much better as they are able to have this trust between one another. It helps for children like Katy who are going through issues, to find the help that they need if they are struggling at home and need understanding.

Having teachers such as Mr Ritter who see and drive a potential in students is something heavily under-appreciated. People say "it's part of the job" but that's not always the case. This teacher didn't have to be patient with her and it's this kind of connection a teacher can have with a student that may be lacking and struggling that can help a student think "Actually, this person believes in me so I should try it". He deserves so much recognition.

Gabbii it’s a shame more teachers aren’t like this, and it’s also upsetting when they choose the wrong kids to believe in. I’ve seen many teachers believe in the same few kids year in, year out , but they haven’t progressed at all & It’s always the loud kids who don’t behave. I think teachers also need to recognise the potential in people who don’t necessarily shout out for ‘help’.

It’s a difficult issue for sure. As a TA, I often see students like her who disrupt classes to the point where teachers have no choice but to remove them. We know that they prob have personal issues but I doubt the other 29 other students don’t have issues of their own. We can’t be babysitters all day and take care of 1 student when there are others. Perhaps the government needs to start investing in psychiatric care and more safeguarding teachers. Teachers have enough on their plate
