Troublemaker on amateur radio

STORY: I was listening to these two guys in Massachusetts having a nice conversation, when all of a sudden, the guy with the southern accent comes in and starts swearing (illegal) and complaining about the guy's audio (which as you can hear, is perfectly fine), and that he's causing splattering further up the band.
After I stopped filming, other people proceeded to come in and let the protagonist know that there was nothing wrong with his audio. The protagonist's friend tuned up the band, and found the troublemaker on another frequency doing the same thing to another group of hams. Our protagonist gets the troublemaker's call sign and looks him up on the Internet, and finds that he's had several call signs, probably because he keeps ticking people off.
Don't be that kind of ham.

@@VTXHobbies well, that and the efficiency of the mode over ssb and fm, less bandwidth used, usually further distances, and you literally only listen to one tone, short or long, so no having to decipher pronunciations of the alphabet by literally thousands of cultures worldwide, CW is the same for everyone. Not to mention CW only rigs have an insanely low current draw, meaning a small battery can last a very long time for portable comms, as opposed to ssb or fm, which are power hungry modes.

Let's be completely honest, audio compression/processing by it's very nature increases Intermediatory (off frequency) signal levels (splatter), propagation conditions, location/proximity and equipment can all contribute towards the problem however that doesn't mean we can/should verbally abuse other operators, the air waves belong to all and sometimes we just need to move frequency 👍
@w.e.s.

@@w.e.s. A mobile phone is fixed to a limited range of frequencies, Amateur Radio transceivers have significantly more "mobility" within the radio spectrum and thus a greater opportunity for interference to specialised radio systems. If he has had several call signs then it sounds like he has been in trouble with the FCC many times and possibly uses fake ID to get new licenses. This person is why some people drop their ham tickets and never find the good things about Ham radio.

They would usually try to talk with him and explain what he is doing wrong and what laws he is violating and if he continues to do it the locals will record his activity mak detailed notes about time and location of his transmissions and turn him in to the FCC. To my experienced ear his audio is clean with a bit of a peak around 1500-2000 hz. he is lighter on bass than the fellow complaining. But that's OK. On FM they call it pre emphasis. it makes for better S/N ratio. he mentioned 3/4 scale on ALC meter. to me he's hitting it a bit hard for a local ragchew, but perfect for DX! I'm a retired RF engineer and I got into ham radio years ago thinking it would be "intelligent" and I quickly realized that license or not, it's almost like CB on some bands/modes.. many don't really understand the technology, many really don't know what the hell they're talking about half the time (but usually think they do), and then if you try to enlighten them because you know technically, they don't want to hear it; they'll argue with you, and some of them love to talk, have to be right, selfish with excessive bandwidth and power, and are bad at listening, so it's just a terrible forum to be involved with if you want to have any meaningful conversation.. Everyone isn't bad, but it's a long way from lots of good operators. They are a minority at this point.

Splatter is what happens when "Overmodulation" happens. Most amateur transmitters have a setting called "microphone gain" There is actually a correct way to set for max audio for your voice to tailor it to the transmitter. When you try pushing this signal higher than it should be. Splatter occurs. To take things to another level. Picture two lines an inch apart from each other and imagine the "Spectrum" of your voice is supposed to fit inside these lines. And cranking up your microphone gain pushes your signal outside these lines and almost doubles the width of your signal. They call this "bandwidth" FM radio stations have it, TV stations have it. The FCC actually has rules that say how "Wide" a person can be. Because there is only so much radio spectrum available for everyone to use. If half the folks out there are splattering, then there is less resource to be enjoyed by everyone. Hope this helps. :)

why don't transceivers have a clipper or AGC circuit for the mic input? that should take care of the splatter problem right?

This makes no sense. It sounds like AM, but the radio says LSB. And it seems to be full duplex - they can talk over each other and hear each other.

I don understand who the troublemaker is. They are both in the wrong. The elderly gentleman is wrong fro thinking that he owns HAM radio. The younger guy is wrong for running as much power as he wants to. The "running as much power as I want" practice and mentality is against FCC regulations. You are only allowed to run the bare minimum needed to contact who you intend to contact. If you are trying to talk to someone in your same town, then 5 watts is all you need, and you should not exceed that.

It's what happens when the wife leaves you, the teeth fall out, and the little shriveled pecker doesn't work any longer.

He’s not territorial, he’s a trifling irritant. You’ll do well not to engage folks like that. It never gets better when you do and they feed on it like the bottom dwellers they are. It’s worse on the CB around major cities.

I occasionally turn up my CB in my Ranger when in major cities. Some crazy conversations, better then talk radio.

When you have no real worries in life you find yourself on 80 meters complaining when things don't go your way. Splattering is often used as an excuse to complain and compare them to CB ops. Ham radios often include filters that work very well for this type of situation but some refuse to use them and if they can hear you they are offended and will non stop complain.
