Thanks Gene, yes it was a esl5. My locksmith, where I bought the safe, has had problems with them and they did treat me right on this.

My ESL10 wasn’t unlocking…I wound enter code and hear click but handle wouldn’t turn. I replaced my batteries and made sure I wasn’t in penalty mode. For whatever reason I decided to flip my safe on its back and try the code…it worked! Now to figure out why the lock isn’t engaging. I video taped it working and not working to show company when I reach out. Thank you for these videos.

I suspect you have a damaged lock. Usually I see these when someone is always checking to see if the safe is locked and they are actually slamming the boltworks into the bolt of the lock. The lock will work fine for a long time, but eventually the damage caused by this constant slamming will cause the bolt to crack. When it does this, if your safe lock is pointing down, it will never unlock. But if it is pointing up, you maybe able to coax it one more time. Here is a video where I examine a damaged lock caused by the very thing I describe above. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-FUWt-a9-WPk.html

I'm retired from 40 yrs as a locksmith and safe tech. You didn't mention bound boltwork. I had many instants where handle had no play or did seem to have play but items inside the safe where pushed against the back of the door or in the corner blocking the bolt ends, a few I could not release. Try to hold handle in locked direction while entering code. Also I had trouble with some of the yellow Pro Cell batteries not having enough power for the big ESL 10 solenoid, copper tops always worked. The ESL 10 is the most reliable lock around. Nice helpful video.

I have an ESL10 that does not beep past either the "C" or "C" with 1st digit. I have replaced the batteries with multiple known good batteries, including brand new, guaranteed until 2027, Duracell batteries. I have also disconnected the communication cable and then reconnected it after 15+ min before reconnecting it. Nothing seems to help. I 100% know the passcode; same since I bought the house 10yrs ago. Opened maybe about once per year. Please let me know your thoughts. Thank you.

Hello there! I've got a esl20 and it died .. we changed the batteries but they won't work, it doesn't beeps or anything, but I was disconnecting the keyboard to try what you suggest here and suddenly it beeped and worked (I think I was pushing the batteries too), I entered the code and it went beep beep beep and didn't do anything and died again and I haven't been able to make it work again, sounds like it could be whether I used the wrong batteries or maybe an issue with the keypad contact or green chip card? Even tho I'll wait a few minutes and try again
@StarfleetLockSafeInc
@StarfleetLockSafeInc 4 года назад
It sounds like the lock may be in penalty mode. Basically it did not recognize your code as being entered correctly. It may also be that the new batteries are not any good. What would I suggest for diagnostics? 1. Replace the batteries with brand new Duracell batteries that have not been sitting on the shelf for very long. 2. Double check that the cable is fully seated into the terminal. If it has been disconnected it should give a slight click when it is fully seated. 3. Double check that the battery leads are properly seated in their terminals. Also check to be sure that the battery leads have not been pinched or broken. 4. After doing all of the above, carefully reinstall the keypad onto the keypad base, making double sure that none of the cables or leads are being pinched. 5. Now wait at least 15 minutes before pressing any buttons on the keypad. 6. After the 15 minutes have elapsed, try re-entering the combo that you think it should be. If it gives you 4 beeps, it does not recognize the numbers as the correct combo. 7. If it does give you 4 beeps, DO NOT enter that same combo again. But try C123456#. I have seen in extreme cases where the lock has reset to factory default. 8. If none of this works, you may have either a bad keypad or a bad lock. I would try replacing the keypad first to get the safe open and then replace the keypad and lock with new. I always recommend a qualified safe technician perform this work. 9. If the new keypad does not work, you will need to have a qualified safe technician open your safe and replace the lock and keypad. We can help you find one if necessary. 10. Good luck and let us know what happens or if we can help you find a safe tech.

Hello, i have a 6032Es10 and wondering why it will click like its trying to open the safe but it doesn’t throw the bolt. I have checked to be sure its not caught on something, changed the batteries several times, etc, it will click each time like it wants to open it but it doesn’t. Sometimes its takes 3 or 4 times to get it to throw the bolt. We have tried several types of batteries including lithium 9 volt and doesn’t seem to make a difference. Thanks.
@StarfleetLockSafeInc
@StarfleetLockSafeInc 2 года назад
Batteries! ONLY Eveready Energizer or DuraCell (ProCell) and ONLY alkaline. Never use lithium or ni-cad batteries -- never. The click. Enter your combination in the usual manner, but just before pressing the # key, put your ear up to the safe near the keypad, and listen carefully as you press the # key. What do you hear? If you hear a click and about 2 to 4 seconds later hear another click, the lock is operating properly. However, if you hear a click followed almost instantly by another click, your lock is unlocking and instantly re-locking. The lock is bad and needs to be replaced. How do you get the door open in a case like this? Try to be quick with turning the handle after pressing the # key. Otherwise, you will need a safe tech to drill for a bypass. A final thought, your ESL10 could be worn out or be gummed up or be corroded, depending on the environment it is in, but until I know better, I am going to go with either poor batteries or a bad lock. If you would like for us to assist you in finding a safe tech in your area, please let us know.

@StarfleetLockSafeInc

It sounds like you might have a cable that’s pinched or shorted out somewhere. It might even be in the plug at the back of the keypad. Check all the connections and wires and see if you can solve it that way. There’s a possibility the keypad is bad and you have a stuck button. If a button on the membrane is stuck that could cause it. Is it beeping at all?

Hello Gene, I have a ELS10. Only 3 months old and one night, it crapped out. By crapped out I mean pressing any of the keys makes no sound. I never opened it to change batteries until the next day. I tried 2 different sets of batteries (multi-metered too) but nothing. Any troubleshooting tips?
@StarfleetLockSafeInc
@StarfleetLockSafeInc 2 года назад
No sound at all? This is usually from a disconnected keypad. The cable that connects the keypad to the lock is either disconnected at the keypad or there is a cut somewhere in the cable preventing the connection. I have seem instances of both. First, remove the keypad from the keypad base as if you were going to replace the batteries. Remove the cable from its receptacle in the keypad. Examine it to make sure it doesn't have any apparent damage. If you see damage, you have solved the problem. If you see no damage, reinstall the cable and be sure the connection locks into the terminal. Try your combination C - x x x x x x- #. If it works, problem solved. Second, if the first didn't work, while the keypad is separated from the base, and while sort of pushing the cable into the safe, try to re-enter the combo and see if the lock works. If it works, there is most likely a short somewhere between the cable and the safe. If not, the issue is probably a damaged cable on the interior of the safe or within the lock itself. Try a different keypad, but if this is where you are in your diagnostics, a safe tech is going to be necessary to open the safe and replace the lock.

My safe has an esl10 but I forgot my password. If I buy a whole other keypad can I just attach the new key pad and open the safe with a new password on the new keypad or does the actual safe its self remember the password from the original keypad?? I would appreciate the help, thanks!

Unfortunately the keypad will not work the way you were hoping. The lock actually stores the combination so if you were to install a new keypad it would still only open using the old combination. You will need to contact a Professional Safe Technician who can contact AMSEC and obtain an override code to open your safe. If you need help finding one please let us know the zip code of the area you are in and we can help you find one. And let us know how this ends for you we always love to hear when someone gets back into their safe. Good Luck!

Question - should we upgrade the lock to a different one or let them put another ESL5 on ? Tired of being locked out and never know when it will open ? Thanks

Hi Richard. The newer ESL10 and ESL20, as well as the ESL5 and ESL15, have the model number on the face of the keypad above the numbers. If you do not have any numbers, you most likely have the first generation ESL10 or 20. If you cannot identify the keypad, send us a clear photo and we will be happy to help you.

@StarfleetLockSafeInc
@StarfleetLockSafeInc 4 года назад
Rodrigo. Try disconnecting the battery. While the battery is disconnected, press and old the C for about 10 seconds. Check the lock cable to be sure it is properly seated in the terminal and give it a very light tug to be really sure. Wait another 30 to 60 seconds and reinstall the battery. Reattach the keypad to the base on the safe. DO NOT press any buttons on the keypad. Check to be sure that the keypad is not lit. Now wait another 5 to 6 minutes to be sure that the lock isn't in penalty mode. After 5-6 minutes, enter your combination in the usual manner. If you continue to have issues, you have either a bad keypad or a bad lock or both. At this point you will need a qualified safe technician to open the lock. Let me know how this works out for you and if we need to help you find a qualified safe tech. At some point soon, I would recommend you replace the ESL5 with an ESL10 or EL20.

I have an ESL5 on my safe. I’m always paranoid about it failing. I grew up with dial locks in the safes that we used in our family business, so I’ve always been skeptical about these electronic locks. Would it be advisable to have a spare ESL5 keypad on hand as a back up? Also, how difficult and expensive is it to retrofit a dial lock onto a safe that already has a keypad?
@StarfleetLockSafeInc
@StarfleetLockSafeInc Год назад
A spare ESL5 keypad would be fine, but which one. There are at least 2 versions of the ESL5 (I think we may be up to 3 versions by now.) I would just go ahead and have the ESL5 replaced with either an ESL10. If a swingbolt type lock is necessary, then I would recommend the SecuRam Basic with EL0601 swingbolt lock. Good Luck.

hello I've got an amsec safe with an esl10 lock it won't lock the door's open and i can get the bolts to come out can you advise?
@StarfleetLockSafeInc
@StarfleetLockSafeInc 3 года назад
Ok. A couple of things come to mind. A. Bad batteries. It sounds crazy, but if you have bad or weak batteries the lock can actually get locked in the unlocked position. Replace with high quality batteries and re-enter your combination as you normally would. If that doesn't work, move on to my next suggestions. B. Safe boltworks are not extending completely. (It sounds like you are already trying this, but I am going to state it for anyone that might be reading these comments.) The easiest way to check this is to open the safe door at least 90 degrees, if it has one - press the detent release (on most AMSEC safes it is a little button, protruding rod, or bar on the hinge side of the door, usually behind one of the bolts, that can be pushed inward), and lock the safe open. In other words, get the safe in a state where the boltworks is in the locked position, but with the door wide open. Now check the lock. If it is locked, the problem is something inside the safe is preventing the boltwork from fully extending when closing the door and locking the safe. If the lock is still in an unlocked state, go to the next suggestion. C. Failure. This is most likely a failure of the lock, but I have seen other failures (such as loose boltworks, fired relock devices, worn handle cams, etc.) that mimic the appearance of a failed lock. If the boltworks appears to be working properly by extending and retracting while turning the handle, then I would lean toward an actual lock failure. If you ultimately find that the issue is "C", you will need to replace the lock and keypad. In 99% of the cases I talk with, I do not recommend that anyone with experience work on or service these locks and keypads. If you need help finding a qualified safe tech in your area, we just need to know your zip code and we can assist you in the search. I hope this helps.

Has anyone wired batteries in parallel to give more current for the lock? I have the ESL5 on a safe I bought used, and I've only gotten it to open 2 or 3 times with a new battery. I've taken off the interior panel and can see the mechanism, which isn't binding. I hear the lock click but it doesn't allow the 'striker' to slip out of the way
@StarfleetLockSafeInc
@StarfleetLockSafeInc Год назад
I apologize for not responding sooner. The ESL5 is a swingbolt type lock. When you enter the code, the motor or solenoid internal to the lock disengages from the swingbolt allowing the bolt to swing out of the way as it is pushed on. If when you enter the code, you hear a click and then push on the flat of the swingbolt, it should swing out of the way. However, if you don't hear a click, then you have lock failure. If you hear a click and it swing clear, it could be in a bind or its simply a lock failure.

The ESL 10 -20 are deadbolts. The Defense Vault needs a swingbolt. Another brand could be installed. We would recommend SR basic. SecuRam Safe Logic system. El0601 swingbolt with any of the Safe Logic keypads.

@@StarfleetLockSafeInc In your experience does the current production of ESL-5 have a high failure rate? High enough that you'd preemptively replace it with something else? I know that the early production ESL-5 had a microprocessor problem that caused Amsec to have to change to a different chip. Wondering if it's still a problem with the new ones. Thanks for a great video.

@StarfleetLockSafeInc
@StarfleetLockSafeInc 3 года назад
A couple things come to mind here. Knowing which safe your ESL10 is installed on might help diagnose your problem. First, check to see if the lock is in penalty mode. Sometimes this happens when weak batteries are present. It is like the lock can't interpret the signal from the keypad properly because there isn't enough juice to push the commands through. If the LED is blinking every few seconds, it is in penalty mode. Just wait for it to finish the penalty and try the correct combo again. Second, check the new batteries to make sure they are fresh. Sometimes even straight out of the package the batteries are no longer fresh enough. Third, be sure the safe handle is turned all the way to the locked position. Sometimes we see a bind on the lock bolt when the handle isn't turned fully to the closed position. If the door is in a bind, the handle may not want to naturally go to the fully closed/locked position and may need a little extra help. Let me know if any of this helped.

@StarfleetLockSafeInc
@StarfleetLockSafeInc Год назад
Here are my thoughts. A. Batteries, even brand new, can sometimes still be bad. B. Do you check to see that the safe door is locked by always turning the handle in the direction to unlock after closing and locking the door? I have seen this cause an issue, especially in commercial settings where the safe is entered several times a day. What happens is the safe boltworks slams against the side of the lock bolt. After so long, the bolt can form a crack or two from the sideways stress. When this happens, the bolt usually fails by cracking and allowing the tip of the bolt to break free from the rest of the bolt. If the safe has a lock that is mounted vertically down (lock bolt pointing down) then the bolt disconnects from the lock and actually jams in place. (Sometimes it just floats in the area where it failed.) Catastrophic failure that will necessitate a drilling by a qualified safe technician. C. Do you slam you safe door? The force from slamming a safe door can cause the relock device in the door to activate. If this is the case, a qualified safe tech will be needed to drill, open and repair your safe. D. The lock has gone bad, is worn out, or electronically failed. If you are hearing the click as if it is unlocking, then it probably isn't this. My guess--and it is only a guess--is that you have either B or C. I any case, a qualified safe technician is probably needed. If you need assistance finding a qualified safe tech, let us know.

Sounds like a failure where the lock is unlocking and then locking almost immediately. It needs to be replaced. To get it open you need to be able to quickly turn the handle before the lock re-locks. Bought my AMSEC safe back in late February and the safe door won’t open. Going to contact the dealer tomorrow but I thought I’d ask here first. Has an ESL5 lock. Tried 3 different Duracell batteries. Lock beeps and knows when I put in the right code. I’d code entered incorrectly it warbles... Seems like when lock is open the handle turns just a tiny bit amount further open but won’t budge. Have tried pushing in on door, giving it a kick. I’m assuming this is catastrophic failure and should be under warranty in the first year. Hoping at least.

If you haven't tried turning the handle as if you were closing the safe, to be sure the bolts are not in a bind (it does sound like this is likely not the problem based on your description). Other than that and trying new fresh batteries straight from an unopened package, your next best bet is to try AMSEC and see if they can troubleshoot with you over the phone. You have four choices: First, try to discern what number you did input. Second, call an authorized AMSEC service tech and have him get an MRC. (reset code). Third, buy a new lock; replace the lock; remove the serial number from under the keypad; and program up your new lock. Warranty on the lock may not be honored because the keypad was not replaced at the same time in a set. Which brings us to the fourth choice, buy a new ESL10XL keypad and lock as a set. Replace the lock and keypad (and keypad base). Warranty will be in full effect. There is a relock device on most AMSEC safes, as well as most other manufactured quality safes. If the new lock is not installed properly, and tested several times in the open position, a lockout could occur. If you need help locating an authorized AMSEC service tech, please let us know by email through our website and we will be happy to help you.

@StarfleetLockSafeInc
@StarfleetLockSafeInc Год назад
Eric, I am sorry for not responding sooner. Most of the time a flashing keypad indicates that the lock is in Penalty Mode. The ESL 5 and ESL 15 are the only two Amsec models with this style keypad that have the flashing number feature. The ESL 10 and ESL 20 have a red LED that would flash. If your lock is in Penalty Mode, you just need to leave the battery in and wait about 5 minutes. If the flashing hasn't stopped after 5 minutes, unplug the cable in the back of the keyad. Wait about 5 to 10 minutes and before plugging the cable back into the keypad. If this hasn't solved your issue, then you will probably need a safe tech to open and repair your safe. Let us know if this works for you or if we can direct you in the right direction for a safe tech in your area.

Which lock do you have? If you have the ESL5 or ESL15, there is a stealth mode that turns off the sound. Or you could have a damaged peizo in the keypad. If it were a battery issue, the beeps would still sound (probably weaker than usual) but the lock would fail to open.

@StarfleetLockSafeInc
@StarfleetLockSafeInc 4 года назад
Mike, Sounds like one of two things. First, it could be in penalty mode. Is the red LED blinking every 5 to 10 seconds? If so, wait 5 minutes until it stops blinking and try to enter your code. Second, yes it could be a catastrophic failure, but not necessarily. It might actually just be a bad keypad. Doesn't happen often, but sometimes we see it. If the first possibility doesn't solve it, try the second possibility by obtaining a working keypad from another safe or from an AMSEC safe technician. (Needs to be an ESL10 keypad, the other ESL keypads will not work.) Then simply swap the keypads, make sure you have a well charged battery, check that it isn't in penalty mode (just wait for it to time out if it is), and then enter your code. If either of these procedures don't help, you will need to contact a good safe tech. He might be able to help you without drilling, but if necessary, you want someone who can repair the safe properly once it is opened. Let me know if I can be of anymore assistance or if you need help finding a good safe tech. Gene

Four possibilities come to mind. First: Probably in "Penalty Mode". Leave battery in and wait 5 or 6 minutes. Then try as normal. (This is my main suspect.) Second: The lock cable isn't fully seated into the keypad plug. Third: You used Lithium batteries in the past and fried the keypad and/or the lock. This is a recent discovery with several electronic lock manufacturers. Never use lithium batteries in an electronic safe lock unless the manufacturer specifically says its okay. Fourth: You may just have a bad keypad or a bad lock or both.

In most cases the answer is yes an ESL 20 or an ESL10 will work just fine. Every once in awhile the design of the safe's boltworks will make it impossible to use a deadbolt style lock, especially one that relocks before the safe is closed (such as the ESL10 and 20.) If you have an upright gunsafe, then most likely yes.

@StarfleetLockSafeInc
@StarfleetLockSafeInc 4 года назад
Zachery. The ESL5 keypads and locks have been having some serious issues lately. Here is what I would do: Replace the battery with a Duracell 9V alkaline, but do not press any buttons. Wait 15 minutes. Enter your current combo, slowly and meticulously. You are listening for the beeps and watching for the keypad to light up on each press of a key. If your safe opens, DO NOT LET IT CLOSE or lock back up. (More on that in a second.) If it does not open, listen to see if it is giving you a wrong code indication (4 quick beeps.) If so, and you know this is the correct number, then it is definitely a failed lock or keypad. If while you entered your combo, one of the numbers did not seem to work, this is also an indication of a failed keypad. Next would be to obtain a different ESL5 keypad to replace your current keypad. Try your combo to see if it opens. If not, then you will need a locksmith/safe tech that specializes in these type of safes, because it would be an indicator that you have catastrophic failure. He may be able to use a specialized tool (if he has one) that might be able to recondition the lock at least once more time to allow it to be opened, otherwise it will need to be drilled. Replace the lock with an ESL10, one of the most robust locks on the market today. If you are able to get the safe open (earlier note) then DO NOT LET IT CLOSE or lock back up, actually lock the door in the open position to keep it from locking you out. Then call a locksmith/safe tech. If you let me know where you live, I can help you find a qualified safe tech. On a side note, I have the ESL10 and ESL20 locks on my home and business safes. These locks are great. The ESL5 is the only lock I have ever had catastrophic failure when it was brand new out of the box. The ESL5 and ESL15 locks just are not built very well and fail too often. Good luck.

Again it is unfortunate that the manufacturers of electronic locks (just about all of them) will not stand behind their products for longer than 1 year. The ESL10 and ESL20 locks are so robust that I use them on my personal safes, as well as my company safes. They are some of the best in the world. There are other manufacturers that provide high-quality and long lasting locks, but those same manufacturers also have low-quality or failure prone locks. We sell and install electronic locks manufactured by at least 5 different companies. Additionally, we work with several lock and safe manufacturers to provide warranty and non-warranty service. So, I see a lot of different locks and a lot of different failures (and successes.) I hope you have a good safe technician that you can rely on if there are any issues in the future. Thank you for commenting. Gene

Carlos, If you have the current combination please watch our video on changing the combination to an ESL5 or ESL10. If you do not have the current combination you will need to either contact AMSEC or a Professional Safe Technician in your area. If you do not have Safe Technician you normally use, please let us know your zip code and we can recommend someone. There are also English and Spanish operating instructions on AMSEC's website if you need that.

We are always happy to help anyone who asks, but that normally starts with a description of the problem. If you’d let us know what your issue is, we can likely solve it or point you in the direction of a professional safe technician in your area. 🤓
