Troubleshooting hard drive failure on a HP Touchsmart 23 

I believe that was the original hard drive in the computer. Take a look at the other videos on my channel. There's a few where I replace the hard drive in an all-in-one with a solid-state drive.

What you need to do is do a Google search for the model number of your computer and service manual. In the service manual there will be a list of parts along with the part number. You can use that part number to locate a replacement. I do have to tell you that this is a very unusual problems and that you are situation may be different.

In this video the failed part was the power and data cable between the hard drive in the motherboard. A boot disk error message can mean that the drive isn't detected at all or the drive is physically failing. If you replace the hard drive because of an error message and the error messages the same there's a possibility that that hard drive is not the issue. It could be the cable or the motherboard. It could also be that you need to reinstall Windows onto the Dr. The first thing I would check is if the hard drive when plugged in and the computer turned on spins. You can hear it when you turn the computer on. If you put your hand on the drive when you turn the computer on you'll feel it vibrate if it's spinning.

Michael Cooper installing windows. Would I use another computer to install? I’m no guru at this. I’m just experimenting really..lol couldn’t find any leads pertaining this issue..it’s an old hp23 2014 maybe

@@MrOlegalis69 You'll need to download Windows 10 from Microsoft. Do a Google search for download Windows 10 from Microsoft. On the Microsoft page there's a link to create a flash drive with Windows 10. You then put that into the all in one, start it up and it should boot into the Windows 10 installer. From there you can see if the hard drive is being detected. Before you do all that actually check to see if the drive is spinning like I said in my previous reply.

@@MichaelTheComputerGuy I know this is a super late reply, but I have the same pc, Same issule. And My hard drive is vibrating when turning it on. There is no burn, I JUST bought a new hard drive, same exact problem, 3fo etc hard disk not found or failed, I know for a fact the new ones are fully working.. Help?

Find a place to repair the motherboard or try getting a replacement motherboard.

That's a 3.5 inch hard drive. You can make it 2.5 inch hard drive, or ssd fit in just about every computer.

try moving the RAM module from the slot that it is in ove to an empty slot.

I would clean the cooler if it was dirty. If it's not dirty but still overheating I'd take the cooler off and replace the thermal compound between the cooler and the CPU.

I've been working on computers for 25 years and doing it professionally for the past 10 years. This is the only time I've seen a cable get burnt through.

I'm thinking there was a breakdown in the plastics separating the wires and then shorted together.

Was the original hard drive 2.5 or 3.5 inch?

I found it by doing a search on Google for the model number of this computer and the words service manual. You can download the service manual from HP and in it there is a list of all the parts in the computer including the part numbers. I then took that part number to eBay, searched for it and found it.

The table is pretty scratched up but is not hard enough to scratch any plastic. I have laid hundreds of computers on that table. None of them have been scratched.

@@MichaelTheComputerGuy Ok while you might think you know it all im sorry to break it to you man,but you cant redefine the laws of "friction " while the table may be smooth as you think it is still abrasive! Why dont you push around the computer while its face down on the table and see what happens. Its friction and will still leave swirl marks or light scratches that you may or may not see. I will not let you fix my product if I knew this is how you handle customer's stuff. It takes nothing for you to place a microfiber cloth or towel and lay the pc on that. Why risk it? This is what a professional would do. Years ago I called Panasonic for repairs on my $3000 tv. And they came to pick it up for repairs. Then 4days later take brought it back to me and when I saw it the entire bezel of the tv was scratched up!!! Man I was raged!!! I called Panasonic back and they sent out a tech the 3rd day with a new bezel that he replaced on site(at my house).I watched him lay a towel on the floor and went to work on the tv. Now I'm 100% sure the repair guys did not lay the tv on a table or floor the first time but the bezel was still scratched!! So I'm sure after my case they will address the issue in that department how to handle things better. . I'm not here to bash you I'm just here to give you a little insight of things you can change. Get you a piece of fabric to lay on the table is all I'm saying. Good luck.
