Thank you! Your video is the only one that mentioned it might have been the metallic thread that I was using. So I made a thread stand and that made a huge difference. Plus I also changed my needle from a quilting needle (brand new) to a universal needle (also brand new) and my thread quit breaking on me.

After days of trying to get my tension correct for free motion quilting (the machine had just been serviced) I watched your video several times and found when I changed the thread to a lesser amount on the spool, perfect tension! Thank you so much I'm quilting again now.

ive nearly launched my machine out of the window since starting my first quilt. From the top it looks really good, then underneath it varies from being perfect to eyelashy and all over the place without any adjustments from me. Ive practiced and used test sandwhiches and only start again on my quilt when it seams ok. Ive got a very old cheap machine and even just had it serviced.

Hey lizzclare , I hope this video helped you identify the problem. Does the 'eyelashing' happen mostly on curves? That's where I always see it when I'm using my home machine. Having a practice quilt sandwich handy before I start quilting really does help a lot - use the specific thread you're going to be quilting with in both the top and the bobbin. That way, you can work out the issues before you get started on your actual quilt. Make sure your machine is threaded properly (you have no idea how often I've overlooked that and nearly thrown my own machine out the window before realizing it was user error...whoops...) then, slowly adjust your top tension as you practice with a small area of a design. Make a bit of the design, check the back, adjust tension a little bit, repeat until you're satisfied. It's a little bit of a process, but it really will save you time and curb the desire to test your machine vs. gravity. If I'm understanding the 'eyelashing' correctly, it sounds like your top tension is too loose, even if it looks fine on other parts of your quilted line. -E.B. Recently quilted a large wall hanging free motion and top looked great but back not so much. Today's free motion on another wall hanging top looks perfect, back looks perfect but on every curve - eyelashes all over the place!??

Hello! I am a brand new quilter, and have a juki 6000. I noticed those “dots” I tried adjusting tension but they went from top to bottom, so I don’t think that’s the issue. My thread spool is large ( not as big as yours here, but not a regular spool) . My question is two-fold. 1. Can an external thread holder be used with any machine? And 2. Do you think the spool size could be my issue? Loved this video, it was very helpful! Cannot wait to watch more... 😊

This was so helpful. Thank you for making it all make sense. Problem I have is when I'm using the "invisible" thread. i get a tangled mess underneath. Does this have to do with the tension as well.?

With invisible, or monofilament thread, your particular issue might be with your needle - try using a smaller needle like a 60/8 or a 70/10. That could clear up the issue, but if not, it may be a tension issue - that's where having the practice quilt sandwich comes in handy. With invisible thread you might need to go pretty low on your dial.

I'm just not sure as to when I make smaller loops I get the eyelashes.....if I just free motion straight, or large loops I'm ok....but why can't I do small loops....any ideas

I'm having problems with my old sewing machine so it's pretty good but then when I go to free motion quilt the threads are all messed up they're not working together what is going on

I've done all that but, for no obvious reason, 4 inches into sewing the tension changes and I have to rip it out and start again. It's the fact that it's inconsistent that's causing my frustration. Machine is just back from service

HELP! This is my first time trying free motion quilting. I keep getting an error on my top thread. The thread keeps breaking, no matter where I set the tension. I have changed it very slowly, even powering it off between adjustments just to make sure it resets. When it does stay threaded for a minute, it will completely skip any curved stitching. I have checked and rechecked how it is thread on top and on the bobbin.
