It doesn't make sense to me how the Albany metropolitan area doesn't have a bigger minor-league baseball team. As of yesterday, the ValleyCats no longer even have a major-league affiliate. For an area of around 1,000,000 people this is an embarassment, especially because the VCs have always had a fanbase. For perspective, Erie PA and Binghamton both have AA teams and Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse all have AAA. To be honest I think we ought to have a team on par with them.
@TheDCShow0
@TheDCShow0 3 года назад
It's extremely disappointing. It's also strange that Albany wasn't able to keep an AHL team (riverrats, devils), while Binghamton, Utica, Syracuse, and Rochester all currently have them.

Hawkins Stadium used to be in Menands. Babe Ruth played there at one time. There used to be the albany-colonie Yankees . Jeter came through there . The Tri-City valleycats at Bruno Stadium , quite a few Astros came through there . It doesn't make sense that we don't have more sports teams.

I spent four years there in the early 80's. It was a hoot to find out that they used some of the frat houses at RPI as "Victorian era mansions" in the movie "The Age of Innocence" with Daniel Day Lewis and Wynona Ryder. Another plus - it's an easy drive to Boston, through very scenic roads (in the fall). And the Adirondacks and the Berkshires are a stone's throw away. And apparently, Troy looks Victorian enough to serve as a backdrop to the HBO mini series "The Guilded Age."

Thanks for sharing this! Troy NY is definitely one of the greatest cities! The grounds of both universities (RPI & SAGE) have some of the most vibrant and varied, beautiful, and meticulously cared for landscaping. Their downtown is indeed struggling because of the current pandemic, but I have faith in the people of Troy to rebuild and help each other out (they are a uniquely encouraging and sharing bunch in Troy:-). Two major rivers run through Troy: the Hudson, and the Mohawk. There are several parks for such a small'ish city. Troy is also fortunate in that it incorporates trees and other green infrastructure throughout parts of the city (particularly in and around downtown). For a city in the Capital Region, Troy is surrounded by an incredibly high amount of mother nature: mountains, gorges, waterfalls, tributaries, ponds, rivers, city & state parks, tree-lined streets - it is a BEAUTIFUL city. There are many mountain ranges all within 40 miles (& some within clear view): the Greylock Mountain Range, the Blackhead Mountains, the Helderberg Mountains, the Hoosac Mountain Range, the Kaderosseras Range, the Luzerne Mountains, the Palmertown Range, and the Taconic Range. Both MA & VT are within spitting distance (VERY easy driving distance). Their architecture is simply - wow! There are some very nice bridges (my favorite is the Green Island Bridge). Troy NY is also host to not only the best farmer's market in NYS, but nationally. Nope, it's not an exaggeration (although it will need building up after this awful pandemic, as so many things will). www.agilitypr.news/Troy-Farmers-Market-Voted-1st-in-Nation--6196 Crime? yes, wherever there are human beings there will, sadly, be crime. Still, it is a truly great city for so many reasons, the people being one of those greatest reasons. I'm glad to see that somebody else thought enough of Troy NY that he (you) shared this wonderful video. Thank you for sharing it! :-)

@@TheDCShow0 My daughter moved here for a job (for an engineering firm) and I remember having to bite my tongue because I too was a blind fool about Troy. Then I visited her for the first time (this was just when Troy was starting another of her famous comebacks:-). Within a couple of years, I too had moved to the most wonderful city I ever lived in (& I've lived in Europe and various parts of the US others would be envious of). Nothing could have prepared me for what Troy would so quickly come to mean to me. Both my daughter & I are from further upstate where it is beautiful, but there is something insidious about Troy that makes one feel as if they have "come home", as if they have always lived here and "belonged" here. I can't explain it. And yes, I meant every word about the beauties of this great city. And the people? I have met more wonderful & kind people here than in a lot of other places I have lived. Troy gets a bad rap. It's too bad, really. Again, thanks so much for you nice video of my great city :-))). I see you have made other city video's (was that you?). I'll have to check them out now.

My children were so upset by the move they referred to it not exactly inaccurately as “Rednecktady”. But after viewing your video of my new little city yesterday, I was less embarrassed. Seriously. My daughter was accepted to RPI for Fall 2021 and she's trying to decide if RPI is the right school for her. We haven't been able to visit due to Covid, so I was thrilled to find this video. Friends have commented that Troy is similar to Worcester MA and I think they're right. Some areas are better than others, it has areas of downtown being revitalized, and it had a big, expensive, abandoned mall too. We'll have to take a day trip and drive around a bit.

I was born in Troy in the 1950s. It was a great place to live. My morning paper route took me through the RPI campus; I'd deliver The Times Record to a lot of the fraternity houses. My first experience with Troy was around 1980, when my mother moved there from the Utica area. Eventually, my sister moved to Troy around 1983. My mother couldn't wait to get out of Troy and moved to Albany. My sister stayed in Troy until about 2016. Over the years Troy went down hill. I've heard many refer to Troy as "the Troilet". I last visited Troy in 2018 and it hasn't improved. In fact, most of upstate suffers from bad politicians, high taxes and a lack of good paying jobs. I love to visit but, I had to move out of NY for better wages.
@TheDCShow0
@TheDCShow0 3 года назад
Yeah I'm also leaving NY, you're right Troy has been on hard times. I figure making a video about the positive aspects is just doing my part to make sure people know Troy exists and isn't really "the Troilet" the way some people imagine it.

I grew up in Utica and went to RPI. After graduation, I worked in FL and southern CA. Notice a trend? Upstate NY has been hit with the double whammy of national de-industrialization and especially bad policies by the NYC dominated state government. It’s NOT weather because I live in CA which probably has the best weather on the planet but people are leaving in droves because of the dysfunctional state government. I never saw a “Help Wanted” sign except in the movies until I left NYS.

Sadly, Troy-Bilt was a company that did well until management decided to purchase Bolens in the 90’s. This made them too heavy trying to produce several types of outdoor power equipment. Troy-Bilt also tried to give every customer a lifetime guarantee on every piece of equipment sold to stand out from the competition. This all lead to the downfall of the company.

I know Albany has some decent high paying government jobs, but that’s a considerable commute from Albany every day, (unless your butler drives you) I live in Orlando, we have several expensive private high schools. Troy once had a major league level professional baseball team. When the team folded its place in the league was taken by a new team downstate, who got their name from the tall, future hall of fame first baseman, Roger Connor. And that's where the NY Giants, now the SF Giants, came from. /My problem with Troy is they run the pretty typical backwater parking ticket trap game, where if you want to fight a ticket they first make you come in and talk to the prosecutor on one day, and then, if you want to fight it, make you come in on another day to fight it. I got a bogus ticket in front of their city hall. I gave up on fighting it because it would have cost more to fight, but I stopped going to Troy. I'm not rich, over the years they have easily lost out on the cost of the ticket in terms of lost sales tax from me, as well as the revenue that their local shops could have made. I know speed traps and parking traps help fill gaps in the budget, but long term they damage your city's reputation.

Troy doesn't just "claim to be the home of Uncle Sam" and "milk the legend for all it's worth" like he's some cheap trinket we trick the tourists with. Samuel Wilson's history is woven into the fabric of the city. He owned fruit orchards which fed the region, most of the original brick buildings are made of bricks produced by his brickworks, and the meat-packing business which made him famous for his 'US' stamp was at the foot of Ferry Street. Sam Wilson was originally buried in Mt Ida Cemetery and later reinterred in the majestic Oakwood Cemetery, both in Troy. Unrelated but still cool, the success of Troy's detachable collar industry eventually led Upton Sinclair to coin the term 'white collar' to describe the type of workers who tended to wear them.
@TheDCShow0
@TheDCShow0 Год назад
Ah, I wasn’t insinuating that Sam Wilson wasn’t from Troy. I think what I was getting at is that it may not actually be universally agreed that the Uncle Sam campaign during WWI was based on Sam Wilson.
@ontheruntonowhere
@ontheruntonowhere Год назад
@@TheDCShow0 I see. Yes, there is some debate about whether Sam Wilson is _the_ Uncle Sam, it's true: "The most popular theory concerns Samuel Wilson, a New York meatpacker who provided food to U.S. forces during the War of 1812. As the story goes, Wilson and Elbert Anderson, the contractor he supplied, stamped all their beef and pork barrels with the initials “E.A.-U.S.” The “U.S.” was shorthand for United States, but workers began joking that it stood for “Uncle Sam,” as Wilson was locally known. Before long, soldiers had helped bring the term into common use as a nickname for the United States. The Sam Wilson story was first popularized in an 1830 article in the New York Gazette. It was later made a matter of public record in 1961, when Congress passed a resolution acknowledging Wilson as the “progenitor of America’s national symbol of "Uncle Sam.’” Nevertheless, many modern researchers doubt the tale’s veracity. Historian Donald R. Hickey has uncovered a reference to Uncle Sam in a U.S. Navy midshipman’s diary from 1810, which suggests that the term predated the War of 1812. In 1813, meanwhile, Wilson’s hometown newspaper wrote an article that referenced the term, but made no mention of his role in inspiring it. Instead, the story stated that the name was simply a playful take on the “U.S.” that was often emblazoned on military wagons and supplies."

This is true. I think as my videos improve I will try to show more of those neighborhoods, hopefully with a local guide to tell me what I'm looking at.

Me and my former dorm mates at R.P.I. used to call Troy "the armpit of the Northeast".

I'm sure this is based on your extensive knowledge of US cities in the northeast and knack for drawing analogies.

I could make a video of NYC that only showed lower manhattan and you could lodge the same type of complaint. It’s just how these things work, you show the nice places when trying to make someone feel positively about a place.

Was looking for an informational video of troy ny and i must say, you left much unsaid and most of all I do not understand your take on uncle sam. Are you displeased to learn that such an iconic figure came from such a place? He is literally buried in a cemetery in troy ny. The uncle sam cemetery. It may be small an obselete but he was not. So where is you get your questioning from? No troy is not a beautiful place anymore but its history is and should be untouched by questioning like yours. Also I may have to listen back to your video but no mention at all of the victorian stroll. We are one of the most iconic cities when it comes to victorian homes. Troy in recent years has very little to be proud of. Please don't diminish the pride we have left.💞

My knowledge of Troy NY is decades old and is from my days in college. Back then, it was a dumpy town. In my few visits to Troy in recent years, I have not seen much change. So please, don't let this video trick you into visiting Troy. Nothing to see.....move along.
