Hey all!!
Small update... I've been a little quiet here as I relocated my music school to a bigger place on the Gold Coast last year and built this new filming and recording studio 🤘🏻 This video was recorded as part of my schools RU-vid channel 'teacher cover videos' and thought I would share it with you guys here as well cause this song fucking rules. Tower of Power and David Garibaldi have been a massive part of my music influences growing up so felt fitting to cover this song. His linear approach has always been unique! The kit I'm playing here is Pearl's Decade Maple drums that they loaned me (reason for having stock heads). I did a video on this kit here:

Bravo, bravo, Mr. Troy Wright. I've seen Tower of Power twice live in my lifetime and I'll tell you not too many musicians attempt to do their music simply because it's so difficult! David Garibaldi is one of the best drummers in the world and you (Troy Wright) represented his beats very well. Could you do the same thing with " Funkafize "? this is one of my favorite songs by TOP.

Excellent redition sir. Thanks for the upload and it's exactly what I was looking for. I will be studying and practicing this groove from your video. Yes, Girabaldi was, not sure what's he's doing now, a funk drumming legend back in the 70's and 80's. I commend you for keeping his legacy alive and well deserved respect to him.

I love how balanced Sabians pro lines are. And they ALL compliment each other. No matter what you mix and match lol He has a bright brilliant crash and it still works with the darker trashier stuff like the legacies and hhx’s. Thats why I like Sabian so much.

FanaticalDrummer I noticed the same thing! They are nice and bright and clean. It’s very refreshing after so many videos of the Meinl trashcan sound. I was pretty bummed when Louis Palmer went to Meinl from Sabian. I thought his cymbals were fantastic before the switch.

The Solopreneur Hour Podcast with Michael O'Neal Even Sabians darker trashier sets like the Complex, Artisan, HHX and Legacy still retain a musical character. Not obnoxiously dry and airy. Even the new AAX Thin crashes have a great sound. Its right between dark and bright. Hard to explain but they sound great thrown in with dark cymbals.

Incredible playing, if only a little self-indulgent on the FFF dynamics all the way through a jazz funk tune. Listen to the pop / snap you get from a quite rim shot, and compare it to a level matched rim shot which you smash: much more transient, and much more dynamic range to smash into a compressor for that ultra funky sound ;)
