TRT World's team of Sourav Roy, Sulaiman Sibai and Erva Kisa travel to the heart of the Taurus mountains in Cirali, Antalya to find out why the flaming rocks of Yanartas or Chimera, have been burning for thousands of years.
And here's what they found-
The Taurus Mountain range in Antalya, Turkey.
One of the most ancient in the world.
And for the last 80 million years, it’s been standing as a stunning formation of limestone and other sedimentary rocks.
Covered with lush coniferous and deciduous trees, these mountains are host to an ancient wonder - the flaming rocks of Yanartas.
Legend has it that a fire-breathing monster was killed here by a Greek god and its breath lives on beneath the rocks.
But Yanartas is the world's largest deposit of non-volcanic and non-animal origin methane gas.
Due to a rare phenomenon, carbon and hydrogen combine at low temperature and high pressure beneath some rocks and mountains producing highly combustible methane.
But scientists still don't know why deposits such as Yanartas are so rare on the surface of Earth.
As the rocks of Yanartas continue to burn, geologists are continuing their search for more deposits like these.
