@ENDGAME thanks for helping me formulate the plan for my solid sided pop up camper. I binge watched all of you camper builds and enjoyed watching your personal growth, both technically and artistically. I've begun my SketchUp plans with the highest confidence that my finished product will be both functional and nice looking, thanks to you.

Awesome! You will do great. The best advice I can offer is: take your time. A camper build is a long term project. If you find yourself wanting to “just get things done” or becoming more accepting of cutting corners as you move along, stop for a couple days and realign your focus then move on. A rushed build rarely turns out as you want it to weeks/months later when you evaluate the finished product.

Wow. You have gotten so good at this. The way you are pushing boundaries and making every move with a pre planned intention shows how much your builds have changed. I'll say it again, these hasve been the best build vidos to date. Can't wait to see more from you and eventually build my 2.0!!!

Love watching the builds go up Dave. This camper is really close to my own design in terms of using laminated softwoods and 1/2” - 1/4” ply and beveled joints. Out of curiosity, what species of plywood are you using? The only thing I can find is birch and it’s running me over $100/sheet for the last two years.
@EndgameCampers
@EndgameCampers Год назад
I’m using birch for the 1/4 inch and had to go with maple for the 1/2 (they didn’t have 1/2 in birch). I am paying about $30 a sheet for the birch and I think the 1/2 inch was closer to $60. I buy my lumber at a local commercial lumberyard. I found they have a lot more variety, better quality and less expensive. Of course, I buy stuff at the local home store if I need to. If possible, buy from a commercial lumber yard. It will likely be a better alternative

Having built a tiny house rv on a 16 ft car trailer myself, makes me really appreciate your attention to detail. So much extra time and thought goes into the angles so it doesn't look like it was built by a house framer, but a wood craftsman. Enjoy watching your builds.👍

Thanks my friend. That means a lot. I typically feel more like I’m building a piece of furniture than a house too.

The WWII fighter bomber Mosquito was built like this - very strong plywood layups, fuselage and wings. High strength-to-weight ratio. Your cedar idea is not wasted on me, I have wrapped my house in cedar fencing and boardwalks - all 5/8" fence pickets even the boardwalks. It is a beautiful species of wood. Looking forward to cedar in 7.0 !

Where do you source your cedar fence material? Expensive where I'm at.

Lowe’s or Home Depot. I pay $3.97 a plank

Hi, I am very impressed with your current and past projects. You are inspirational. Especially interesting is your devotion to weight reduction. I have a couple specific questions before I get into their context. 1. - Question: What is the legal limit on the width? I noticed that your previous Camper flares wider behind tha cab. I assume there is a federal width limit for interstate travel. I also know that as width increases the wing mirrors need to go out further. 2. - What is the legal limit of overhang behind the bed? I suspect after a certain number we need at add tail/signal lights on back of camper. I have been interested in composit construction to reduce weight. Perhaps wrap carbon fiber around foam or balsa. This is very strong and is how many personal aiurcraft are made. As much as I enjoy woodworking, I want to minimise wood, especially plywood. Composite/foam would also have a very high r-value, be beautiful and very light. Context: I have reserved a 2024 Silverado EV, range 400 miles. (Batter 200kwh) Cosiderations: I could live off grid for weeks on one battery charge. Back cab window is removable, back panel folds down over back seat. So vehicle HVAC is all I would need. Maybe a fan to circulate cab air into camper area. But payload is only 1200 lbs. Take away weight of two adults weight and I am left with 800 lbs. Weight reduction options: 1. No portable battery or solar system needed for off-grid. 2. Back cab window removed (30lbs.). 3. No heater or AC needed in camper. 4. No propane needed if I use my induction cooker, microwave, etc. (37 lbs.) 5. No tailgate needed with the right design. (~75 lbs.) 6. No solar needed. Fun project: See how cheaply I can drive all the way around the US. I would really appreciate your input. Tom - Driftless Heights Channel

I don’t know federal law on width, but I believe it is around 96 inches. I have heard of some class A’s / big rigs that wide. None of my campers even come close to that width. I have never had an issue with mirror width in those ranges. I have had others ask me about using other materials: in short, wood is what I know and therefore what I work with. Wood is better than most people think if you are discerning about the type used and how. Carbon fiber I think would be too expensive for what you get in a camper. Best of luck with the project!!

Hi Dave, what your thoughts on using the composite panels on the uprights / verticals coming up from the base / floor instead of the 1/2 ply, would it be strong enough?

@@EndgameCampers Sounds like something my kids would do. Just wanted to add to your comment at the 22 minute mark. I've been woodworking for years and gluing up the beams and posts is the way to go and I will also take the time to do it in my build. This should definitely give a strong build. If you use a solid post or beam any imperfection in the wood, think microscopic crake, can lead to a future failure if that crack widens and splits through the entire post as the camper moves on the back of the truck. Now with your 3 laminate beams not only is the glue joint stronger than the wood, but any microscopic fracture that fails will only crack to the glue joint and the other 2 pieces of the laminated beam will still remain structurally sound. Also, the fact that the 3 pieces will most likely have different grain patterns should also strengthen the post or beam since the entire structure won't be able to flex along the single direction of the grain like a solid wood post or beam would have.

Can't wait to see the shape this one takes. It's really neat seeing the evolution of your process to make these. Have you ever considered using more curves, like having a domed roof?

I have tried, but have not been able to figure out the domed roof. I would love to get that handled though. I think they look great
