Well done. Great info. I appreciate your perspective on the size/weight of your camper. So many folks are looking for the 1 answer for every persons situation.

Taylor, been a subscriber for a few months now. Love the vids, sir. I have a Lance 975, and I use the Torklift frame mounts and their Fastguns. You are correct. They are extremely expensive, but well worth it for me. Thanks for taking the time to address an often overlooked concept. And you did it with ease.

I put stall mats under the camper to provide a little cushion and to increase the traction between camper and bed. The traction is needed until a Swifty underestimates his length and requires a speedy sterring jerk to avoid a collision. Also helps on fire roads. I also insert 2x6s between camper and wheelwells.

Love the videos. I have the Torklift talon frame mounts and I’ve been using the same positioning for all of my tie downs since I purchased in Feb 2017. The rear arms were always in the outermost position creating potential for more flex. As a result my tie down arms started to bend more and more over time. I contacted torklift and they sent new ones and I did a side by side comparison of new and old ones and it was a HUGE difference how much they bent! My recommendation is if anyone has the Talon setup, use the inner most holes so the arms stick out very little.

We use the Happijac. One of our first trips in the truck camper we left a tie-down at the fuel pump. About 80 miles out, we realized it. We went back and retrieved it. So now we place the tie down in the floorboard of the driver's side while fueling up. It's all a learning curve. Happy trails.

I just received my 2019 Cirrus and I had the Fastgun system installed and love it. I paid $2500.00 installed by D&H in Jacksonville Florida. I couldn't install it myself because of my age (70) and in my younger day's I would of did it myself. One thing I ordered was the locks for them because they say that the Fastguns are sought after by thieves. So being a retired cop I'm proactive in the deterance of theft. Now I could of electrified them but I chose not just kidding.

Hey I bought a pickup that has the torqlift system, and got 4 spring turnbuckles on CL in my own hometown (what are the odds) for 40 bucks for the set. I'm going to see (and hopefully buy) a great used camper today. I will know how to use the tie downs and turnbuckles correctly thanks to you. Your video was very good and thanks for posting it.

You are definitely giving me a great education on truck campers that will make my decisions a lot easier in the future. I agree with you about frame mounting but I think I would get the spring loaded turnbuckles for all 4. Like you said it all depends on your comfort level. What is the life span of these spring loaded turnbuckles? Seems you would want to replace before they fail.

Don't feel pressured to "produce" -- a video every day is a very hard schedule to maintain over the long run (burnout at some point)! IMO, a video every few days/once per week is a reasonable expectation for viewers...at least for this viewer. ;-) BTW...those expensive "fast connect" type of turnbuckles sound great, but being easy to install it seems logical to assume they'd also be easy to steal! At those prices, I'd want them to be theft-resistant (at the very least). Couldn't afford to be replacing them... -- BR

I have the Fast Gun models, the beauty of them is once you establish the correct tightness and fit you simply release the handle to remove. Re installing involves no further adjustment. Just put that jack back where it was and lock the handle down. That works in principle except the camper never loads exactly the same. So there is a bit of fiddling but they are easy to adjust and reliable.

You’re right to feel skeptical about the bumper system. I’ve seen quite a few trucks with bumpers that have either shifted or appear damaged. The frame system makes more sense and seems to be more secure. Nice job!

I built my own camper 30 years ago and had the restraints which were to slide uot, but, even though I oiled them, they rusted in place and I could not get them out. I used turnbuckles as well and given the smaller unit they worked pretty well. However, I would rather use the snap gun fasteners so you do on have turn them. I think they are faster and are easier/faster to remove.

For the record, the frame mounts in combination with the tie downs you describe can exceed $1000. Thankfully, our truck camper weighs exactly half of what yours does (fully loaded) and is secured with bed mounted Brophy mounts at less than 1/4 the cost. I've made a few simple mods to the system and it's working wonderfully. We have over 10,000 miles on them without any signs of stress or issues. We've traveled many hilly, rutted, pot-holed, off camber forest roads without any issues. The most important part of that equation is the rear Hellwig sway bar we installed. Our 3/4 ton Ram with the 2250 lb camper isn't stressed in the least and makes a great combination :-)

Another excellent video. I used the Happijac system for 25 years on my 9.5 foot Lance, and they did their job well. When I purchased my new dually, I spared no expense and set it up with the Torklift tie-downs and Fast Guns. Wow! What a difference in keeping that camper planted. The old style sheet metal (truck bed) and bumper tie down system is probably great for light campers, but I found that driving in high cross-winds would sometimes cause the camper to lift momentarily from the pickup bed as wind was trying to get under it. That makes for some white-knuckled driving! I love the Torklift system, although, as you mentioned, quite expensive

FreeToRoam same here happijacs first go round and on new truck went torklift. Yes MUCH better for my 11ft camper. My question to you is about your fast guns. How do they adjust? Are they spring loaded? I find at times I adjust my spring loaded turn buckels quite a lot. Any info is appreciated.
@freetoroam7769
@freetoroam7769 6 лет назад
Hi KZimmer - the Fastguns are spring loaded much like the front turnbuckles of the Happijacs, and also adjust tension by screwing the threaded half into the polished barrel. A rubber O-ring is used as a guide for determining amount of tension. After installing, and before locking the handle down, slide the O-ring up to the bottom of the barrel, then lock the handle in place. I don't have the instructions in front of me, but I believe they recommend a 1/4 inch of spring compression to get a few hundred lbs. of preload on them. When the barrel pulls away from the O-ring 1/4", you have achieved the proper preload. If not, screw the threaded rod in or out and try again. As long as you load the camper the same distance from the front of the bed each time, you will rarely have to adjust the pretension, if ever. All you do on the next camper loading episode is just install the turnbuckles and lock down the handle with one easy motion. Takes about 10 seconds per each corner. Very quick and easy to use after the first time adjustments are made. They come with pins to keep the handle in place while moving. I'm completely satisfied with them! Just worry that they'll get stolen, but they sell optional locks if that's a concern. Hope this helps.

Hey Phillip. We have a 2006 Ford F150 with running boards. Torklifts don't work and neither do the tie downs recommended by Happijac. What kind of truck do you have and what did you do? I love our Fastguns too. Amazing customer service too. Torklift will tell you to set the tie-downs pointing to the rear at the rear,... and point the fronts towards the front. Then use the Fastguns on the most forward point at front, and most rear point at the rear. This gets the Fastguns as parallel to the ground as possible.

Invent a series of square or round tubing that uses quick disonnects (Quick release pins that connect two pieces of tubing) from a distance looks like a solid mount from your extensions up to your camper and across from front to back and down to your frame mounts. These would bolt to several places on the camper, so your weakest link is less along aline of those wimpy camper connections. Then you can have that burly looking Outback look of a camper tiedown system and still be able to set your camper down off your truck. Not mocking here, just a thought.

My front mount is the happijac box mount and the back is the bumper mount that I plan on changing when I get back out to Az where My welder is . The back fast guns will work but the front ones are too long as they are made for the torq lift mounts . What a bummer .Gonna try to figure out a solution but may have to sell 2 and buy the shorter ones .

I ordered the tie down system from Happijac for my Ford F-150, but it doesn't install on the interior bed. Instead, I would have to drill a 1/2' hole in front of the fender and install a bracket there. I'm not willing to drill a hole in my truck so I'm sending the system back. I'm disappointed because the system that I saw on a truck and thought I ordered mounted like you describe on your video. I'm not looking at the frame system that you have. Thanks for the video.

I had a set of Brophys, returned them after one use. I think they would be fine if you stayed on pavement and very little offroad use. They had alot of flex, and by flex i mean not on the brophys themselves, they were flexing because the sheet metal on the box was flexing over small bumps.

I just installed a full set of frame mounted Torklift on 2000 F350 dually. Well made except the adjustable tubes that come to the outside. They are not all that thick and would probably fail first in extreme off road conditions. I plan on replacing them in the future with a thicker wall square tube or solid bar stock. I had to slightly modify the frame brackets to fit. Overall an ok system, expensive but good.

Torklift is hands down the better product. I will say, I have used just simple turnbuckles for 10 years with no problem. You are using a better system with spring loaded turnbuckles though. On bad bumps in the past, the hook on the turnbuckles has straightened and pulled through the mount hole. I bent it back or replaced it. Well hey, good video. Too bad you don't have a supercab truck. That back seat with a sliding window is a great thing for storage access and in our case, the cat to have his litter box and carrier in the back seat. OK, take care...
