Truck Stop's Offense w/Jonny Malks & Rowan McDonnell | Podcast Clip #1 

I've been coaching a similar style of offence over in St Andrews, Scotland for the last three years now. When Ryan Cooper (name-dropped by Jonny in the podcast) came over from William & Mary to play for us last year, he was able to really iron out and specify the key fundamentals that I had been trying to nail down for a while. I only started playing Ultimate in 2018 and so I was really just applying the principles of other sports to Utlimate (valuing possession, changing the points of attacks, generating momentum with simplified patterns etc). I've found that the most important foundation of this offence, which you guys discuss in the podcast, is players being able to buy-in to the mentality of not turning the disc. Last season was all about trying to convince the team that this 'less flashy' offence was the way forward and that resetting the disc and gaining lateral movement was just as valuable as looking downfield. I feel like when I started playing as a beginner, resetting was conceptualised as an option for when your offence had failed as opposed to a way to generate momentum. It was a massively uphill battle trying to get players to start seeing resetting and swinging the disc as an objective as opposed to a concession. It's been invaluable this season seeing the handler-centric, swing based offence played at the elite level. I've been able to use so much Truck Stop and Breeze footage to show the team what we're aiming for and this has really helped with the buy-in this year. I'm really interested to see where the elite-level offence goes and how much this affects the college game and I really appreciate you guys taking the time to articulate your thoughts on how to play offence in such a transparent way.

As a Truck Stop fan watching the offense play this strategy was nerve-racking since the margins are so small. But the flip side is their opponents must have been thinking any minute now they are going to start making mistakes...

This is our style of play down in Panama, small ball till something opens up. Many hands touch the disc creating good vibes. The idea of working off of triangles is how we play our fútbol as well!
