The #automotive industry has collectively turned their noses up at #plug-in #hybrid vehicles, instead focusing on pure electric #EVs. This ignores the reality in the marketplace and we're glad @Ram introduced the 2025 #RamCharger, a series plug-in hybrid with over 690 mi of range with 141 mi coming on electric alone. We take a deep dive on this vehicle, talk about its impact on the industry and how it actually meets market needs in a truck. #Payload. #Towing. #Generator. #Worksite & #Campsite Power

Ramcharger will likely be worse for long distance travel than a traditional pickup. In gas only mode, this truck is guranteed to get worse mpg than one using a traditional transmission and a lot worse mpg than a traditional hybrid.

I fully believe that the best route to reduced emissions with work vehicles like pickup trucks is to go plug-in hybrid. The new Ramcharger looks great, hits the mark, and hopefully convinces a lot of buyers to consider PHEV. Great video guys.

I would certainly, regularly let the engine charge up the battery. One of the problems with the Chevy Volt was, people would only run electric all the time. The engine would just sit there with all of its fluids and seals, never running, and would rot.

The statement you make of the engine never coming on is false. The engine will come on periodically to heat and cool the battery , plus the engine will start up about every three weeks or so to lubricant it. It will also come on when it determines the gasoline is getting stale and needs to be burned. The volt does a very good job of taking care of its self or telling you when you should do certain things. I have owned three volts which I bought new. They are a very good and well designed automobile.

I'm seriously considering selling my Ram 2500 6.4L Hemi to get this when it comes out. I've got a 2500 because my trailer (Rockwood 2509S) was right on the line between half ton and 3/4ton capabilities once you factor in the tongue weight and all the passengers and cargo and compare to the truck's payload capacity. The Ramcharger says it starts at 2,400lbs of payload (I'm hoping to hear real world number later this year) which should sufficient for my trailer. Home electricity is cheaper than gas, and I actually have a small solar setup (6kW) that I can take advantage of to keep the truck topped off. The giant battery can help backup the home during an outage, and even just regularly overnight when the sun isn't shining. Then the ability to export power will be great when camping off-grid so I don't have to take a dedicated generator or invest in tons of portable solar. I think this setup makes a ton of sense for a lot of people, even if their uses are a bit different from mine. This sort of PHEV setup would be great in a midsize truck too, perhaps with half the battery size and maybe a 4 cylinder engine. My prediction is the Ramcharger is going to convert a ton of people that are hesitant to go full EV, and usher in a new way of PHEV. I don't like the government forcing people to do anything, I've always believed the merits of the platform should let the market decide. And the merits are strong here.

I've been running some numbers, and I'm not sure if I'm doing the math right. These numbers can't be right. There has to be a catch where the Ram Charger is efficient at range extending, but not at recharging the battery. 225 km / 96kWh = 2.343 km per kW OR 96 kWh / 225 km = 0.4266 kW per km 1100 km - 225 km = 875 km 875km / 102L = 8.57 km/L or 20 MPG. 875km * 0.4266 kW per km = 373.275 kWh 373.275kWh / 102L = 3.659 kWh per L OR 102L / 373.275kWh = 0.273 L per kW If gas is $3 per gal, or 3.785 liters, then $3 / 3.785/L = $0.79 per L I hope you see where I'm going with this.... 0.273L per kW * $0.79/L = $0.21 per kW tl;dr I dare you to find a gas generator that makes power at a lower price. For example, the EU6500 Honda Gas Inverter generator makes at most about 5.5 to 5.9kWh/gal. 3.785L/5.9kWh = 0.641L per kW. 0.641L * $0.79/L = $0.50 per kW. $0.50 per kW vs $0.21 per kW. If the Ram Charger comes with a large inverter capable of delivering 7kW like the Ford Lightning, it'll be absolutely insane. 7kW is enough to power a house. Especially in places like California where electricity is $0.33 to $0.45 per kW in some places. Or Texas, where that winter storm in 2021 knocked down their entire electrical grid when their natural gas supply shut down. The price per kW hit something like $9 per kW. In those kind of situations, having a Ram Charger as a backup power source for your home and it only costs $0.21 per kWh would be insanely useful.

I have the Chrysler PHEV Pacifica, I regularly get +60mpg most of the year. In the Upstate NY winters the engine runs more to warm the cabin. Mating a Engine to a transmission which shifts introduces a lot of stress on the engines components, increases wear on crankshaft bearings and cylinders. Mating a engine to a generator - increases is lifespan by 3-4X, so that engine should essentially never wear out.

Dunno about "never" but it should dramatically increase longevity for numerous reasons. Ram's real challenge will be power management, battery life, electronics.

@@ROMRreviews the average daily distance driven in a day is about 50 miles. So that will be fully electric 90%+ of the year - so we are looking at running the generator 20-50x a year for those longer trips and towing. (all averages - I know some people are using trucks different) compare this with daily driving - where the engine runs about 300-350x a year. So you are going to use the engine less by giant factor plus in a less taxing way. Sure there will be issues with the electronics - especially in the first year or two. Just saying - the engine should be not the limiting factor of the trucks life anymore - which it is these days.

@@ROMRreviewsGreat points. Since the nominal range of Ramcharger is 690 miles combined, the range when towing may be roughly 690 miles / 2 = 345 miles. Probably depends on elevation change and speed and wind and all, but that towing range of 345 miles is pretty decent. Bring it on, at a good price. I've also been interested in the electrified trailers put out by Bowlus and being developed by Airstream and Pebble. If that was the case tesla would easily hold the reliability number one spot on every survey or study. But they don't. Because we don't seem to count wiring and programming as complex. But it is. Every wire that goes from a battery to an invertor or mg motor should be considered a possible point of failure. Because well. They fail. Remember, once battery is “depleted” this vehicle will rely entirely upon the pentastar to drive the wheels….when pulling a 14k pound trailer this thing is likely to be a real dog. It uses what I call a “magnetic transmission” to couple the motor to the wheels. Automakers used this tech 100 years ago. It didn’t catch on because there is a big efficiency penalty to pay when the gas engine turns a generator that powers an electric motor.

You may be correct. I have a 2022 f150 3.5 twin turbo Hybird. Pulling a 8k travel trailer the battery kicks in to boost short acceleration performance. When not under full power the battery is recharged. Works great. Given that if you had a long uphill - over the rockies you would lose lot's of power once you depleted the battery.
@Atlec-j9y
@Atlec-j9y 2 месяца назад
The pentastar has no connection to the drive wheels. The engine only charges the battery and/or provides electricity to the electric motors. In this configuration, I don't see how you would notice any performance penalty in terms of towing performance.
@jacuzzibusguy
@jacuzzibusguy 2 месяца назад
@@Atlec-j9y your statement is contradictory. You say the engine has no connected to the drive wheels yet admit that the engine is connected electrically to the drive wheels. Using a gasoline engine to turn a generator to create electricity that goes through fancy electronics and into drive motors is much less efficient than simply connecting the wheels through a traditional transmission. This is why there are essentially no vehicles on the road with this type of transmission except for plug in hybrids….as the efficiency comes from the ability to drive in all electric mode. This drive system has advantages for certain off highway applications.

I am looking at a truck to set up for overlanding with my family. And I think this is a GREAT option. Especially since the other 90% of my driving is within that electric range. So I can get the benefits of an EV for most of my driving with the assurance of gas power for long trips. So when I drive out to Big Bend State Park (which I would NOT do in a F150 Lighting), I don't have to worry about range. And I can get some close to best-in-class towing and payload with it, for towing the MDC XL15-4E that I am eyeballing.

If you discount battery manufacturing flaw failures ( which is noticeable high at 1.5 percent) we are seeing an average of just under 20 percent degradation after 12 years. In 12 years I think batteries like this will cost considerably less. I don't share your anxiety over the battery.
