Nikko the test wasn’t meant to be aired down. They were testing to see what they could do on factory tyres and air pressures. But still the TrailBoss had bugger all weight over the rear axle so was always gonna struggle in 2WD but would have made it with the momentum.

jerrymyahzcat factory air pressure is 35psi, I own a 2020 AT4. You could tell in the video that the psi was well above 35. I climb over 8-15% inclines in 2WD with zero issues here in Arizona, with some of the harshest terrains. The video is disingenuous to the capability of the vehicle and the G80 when the tires are aired above spec and the driver comes to a complete stop mid-acceleration.

Truck with light rear end will struggle up hill in 2 wheel drive always. The G80 was not the problem. The SUV has more weight in the rear which lead to better traction in 2 wheel drive. Again, nothing wrong with the G80 in this comparison.

@jensalan
@jensalan 4 года назад
The G80 didn't lose, the pickup as a platform lost. Put the G80 in the Yukon and it probably would have still made it. It's more a test of weight distribution than a test of powertrain. SUVs simply have better weight distribution than a pickup. And to be clear, the pickup was still modified since it had the tent mounted above the bed so it technically wasn't stock vs stock.
@chasepflueger2594
@chasepflueger2594 4 года назад
Mike K I mean no disrespect but you’re simply wrong and so are the folks from TFL in this video. The G80 engages, turning both rear wheels with in half a second of slip and the back end just doesn’t have traction due to weight. The video shows this clear as day.
@jensalan
@jensalan 4 года назад
@@CatNerfer3000 It's not that it's too light, it's that it doesn't have a good weight distribution. The 2 vehicles are actually pretty comparable in weight, but because the most of the weight is over the front wheels (which weren't powered), the pickup will struggle to put the power from the rear wheels to the ground. This isn't all to say having more weight is better off road. Less weight is generally better. But in this one specific case with the pickup, adding weight would have solved all their problems.

Okay, so, the goal is not to get up the damn hill (I struggle to understand how y'all can be missing that point). The point is to compare and contrast two systems. If they just wanted to get up the hill, they wouldn't have been in 2WD at all, now would they? Nathan stopped hitting the gas when the truck started crabbing sharply sideways- as he said in the video was the reason- because if you were in an actually hairy situation (say, on the side of a cliff, or sliding towards a tree) that would be a dealbreaker right there. You could very literally get up that hill in a 2WD minivan, if you really wanted to. The GMC, on the other hand, stayed in control and on line throughout the drive. That is why it won the comparison. And that's why it SHOULD win the comparison. They are knocking the G80 for darn good reason. It lacks finesse, it lacks control, and it is a blunt tool that the driver has to work around, rather than work with. With a manual locker, you can pick your line and drive it slow and controlled. With the GMC, they could pick their line and drive it slow and controlled, because the electronic locker just worked. With the G80, Nathan had to spin the tire, wait for it to hook up, and then the whole vehicle crabbed sideways because he had to stay on the gas to keep the locker locked. It's a bad system, and GM should feel bad.

Remarkable the GMC 2wd, but I had a Chevy Suburban 2wd and it never got stuck no matter where I took it. I think it's the weight distribution.

I think the Yukon performed better because there’s more weight in the rear than the Trail Boss. If you look closely, it appears the Yukon’s rear differential locked at the same rotations as the Trail Boss.

This was a very good demo of the LSD and the G80. I think the big difference between the 2 was weight, there is just so much less weight on the rear axle of the truck

Glad to see the GMC has redeemed itself, watching the Tahoe Z71 with the marginal LSD and no eLSD or rear locker option quickly turned me off from considering one in a couple of years to replace my truck. We do some overlanding, nothing extreme but having the G80 is a nice safety net. That eLSD worked great...but then with no diesel option available it's not the ideal option for me. Guess I'll be sticking with my Canyon with the Duramax for a while longer. :)

Only the newer G80s spin that much, the older ones when the rear ends were still made in the USA, didn't spin nearly as much. Just an observation from an OBS Silverado Z71 4x4 G80 and 05 Suburban Z71 4x4 G80 owner....

So what exactly is an ELSD, if it's not a traction control system using the brakes then what is it doing? Is it a clutch pack getting squeezed by a magnet? If that's the case, why didn't they just do selectable lockers or a mechanical lsd like a torsion?

In my humble opinion, if the Chevy truck had A SOLID FRONT AXLE THAT SETUP CAN ENHANCE THE TRACTION OVER BIG BUMPS AND HILLS AS WELL AS GAIN MORE TORQUE FROM THE DIFFERENTIAL. I CAN MENTION THERE ARE FEWER PARTS OF THE POWER WHICH IS TRANSFERRED THROUGH. FRONT SOLID AXLES ARE EXTREMELY DURABLE THAN MOST IFS axles and on top of that it can be easily fixed and changed in comparison to IFS. I would advice CHEVY Department to think of providing this truck with front solid axles. It is a good truck. If Chevy Department can offer two options for the market (option 1 a front beam axle and option 2 IFS) .I think they will boost their sale.

Love your shows! Thanks for all you guys do! Please Please Please do a comparison of the 2021 Tahoe Z71 vs the 2021 Yukon AT4 off-roading to compare the LSD (is it even an LSD?) G86 differential (it is not the G80 apparently) on the Tahoe vs the eLSD G96 differential option upgrade on the Yukon AT4 (NOT available on the Tahoe). I have the 2021 Tahoe Z71 you can use for the show...I also have the first King Shocks (thus no air shocks). So maybe that would be fun to compare too...air shocks vs upgrading the shocks (like King, Fox, etc)? I sold my Jeep rubicon for the Tahoe Z71 as I needed a tow vehicle, but still want some off roading ability...

@jerrymyahzcat
@jerrymyahzcat 4 года назад
DARTH MAUL you are only supposed to use it on high settings to get over an obstacle and then put it back to normal again. People keep putting the suspension in highest mode and then driving about off-road with as you say no wheel travel. It’s like low range. You don’t drive about in low range. You use it only when needed.
@rangerover06sc
@rangerover06sc 4 года назад
You don't need wheel travel when you can pretty much send all the torque to the wheels with traction.

sometimes more rubber is better, like on hard pack... ive found that "mudders " grip rock and hard pack very poorly and as much as i appreciate the two wheel drive test its the Opposite of what off roaders do which is "Tread lightly" maybe a TFL trail maintenance day is in order, help keep the trail consistent and open for future use... i cant help but feel we were part of the reason those other trails closed

I have an AT4 (19) Sierra. Considering the Yukon but I really don't like the low hanging rear control arms. Benefits of independent rear suspension aside, those control arms look like a liability when off road. Granted 90% won't go off road, but they look odd.
