I have fished that section of the Truckee many, many times. I am blown away by the number of fish you caught in heavy water. This is water that I am normally walking right by much of the time. Where I would be fishing seams or softer spots, you were pulling them out of the heavy current. Very eye opening and educational for me.
Thanks Bob! A long time ago I sort of trained my eye to pick out those small pockets of softer water right next to the faster water--I have noticed in the past a lot of fishermen walk right by water that looks great to my mind's eye!
Look around Hirschdale (upstream and down) for road access that gets you closer to the Truckee, otherwise you have a short hike from most parking spots along I-80.
Very cool video! It looks beautiful out there! Do you know any good camping spots near the Truckee river that would have good fishing close by? I have a fly pole all spooled up that I have never used. I am a bass fisherman, but I want to try something different this year. Also any technique/fly recommendations? This will be my first time.
Hi Dylan, The Truckee is primarily a nymphing river. You might see a couple of fish rising in the evening here and there. Lots of crayfish--I think as a bass fisherman you would like fishing those patterns like a nymph or like a streamer. Rubbers Legs nymphs in #8-12 and frenchies/pheasant tails in #14-18 will work great. Closest camping is along the river upstream from the town of Truckee, and also in and around Boca Lake. You will want to fish below the town of Truckee for the better fishing.
@@purpledrakefishing Thanks so much. I will give those a try. I'm excited to get out there and catch my first fish on a fly. Also I seen a couple comments regarding your website difficulties. I also received an error when trying to visit your site using your link in the description of this video. Just a heads up. I fixed it by using instead. I have a site as well and I use Wordpress. If you're looking to build your site more I recommend possibly making the switch over to Wordpress. It can be difficult to learn at first, but it really gives you a lot more control over how you build your site. It seems to be the industry standard as most blogs out there are powered by wordpress. If you have any questions about it I would be happy to help.
It is a 10' Sage Pulse 3wt. I highly recommend it for nymphing, but it also works well for dry fly fishing. The indicator is the Leland Trout Float (& panfish float, which is a little larger). BY FAR the best indicator out there. It is in the fishing section and not fly fishing section, so most people don't know about it. www.fishusa.com/product/Lelands-E-Z-Trout-Floats?gclid=CjwKCAjwjZjZBRAZEiwAPeLSK0cy-m2A43ex6t5ZljcXm5PV8e-p8mXbD_uYz7AsPZqQYvQ3UXK3oxoC0gUQAvD_BwE
Very nice video. I've been watching your channel for a while. You nymphing technique is incredible. I thought they say Euro nymphing easily outfish indicator nymphing. But you seem to perform differently. Do you adjust your depth at different section when you fish? I am not fly fishing very long, sometimes have hard time nymphing under indicator. Thanks
Greg Sheu read books. Best way to learn fly fishing. Also don’t follow what everyone else does, find what works for you. Meet some people who knows how to fly fish better then you and learn from them best way to step your game up.
Greg Sheu fly fishing Nevada by Jan nemic you can get it at sportsman’s warehouse. I learn to fish in Nevada from that book and meeting new people. Check out my Instagram @nevadafishing I’m move then happy to give out pointers on anything you have questions about
Thanks Rogue J--Sorry for the delay in responding--a lot of comments were sitting in "held for review" for some reason... This was in the canyon section off of I-80, between Hirshdale and Verdi.
It is in the canyon section, which is between Hirschdale, CA and Verdi, NV. I was in the middle part of it that day. It is good water throughout with no section much better than another.
