Trucking Safe Downhill Braking Video Explained video in response to my video "Proper Down Hill Braking"
For ALL The Drivers that think going slow enough to let the engine brake, well, that works too, but you will find yourself going down that mountain about 20 MPH slower depending on your Engine Brake Horsepower, read you owners manual, you will find that just because a company truck is governed at 1800 RPM's doesn't mean that is the Max braking Horse Power R.P.M.'s usually around 2100 R.P.M's is the MAX BRAKING HP TTT see my Proper Down Hill Braking 9% Grade 79,000 GVW. Using 5, 3, Braking Technique Video at
• Proper Down Hill Brake... Also a mountain like going down I-77 is a good place to check this out if you don't believe it, once past the chicken coops pull over and check how cool you brakes actually are... TTT

What they don't tell you is what to do in a braking emergency. 1. go full jake 2. get them downshift DONE!!! 3. STAND on that god damn brake pedal- let 'em burn! 4. make plan if it all goes to hell. I got down Donner Pass O.K. by doing all of the above. And when you stop, throttle up and alternate tractor/trailer brake release to give them a cooling air gap.

While I feel like I stepped back to the 80's as a student trucker I found the information helpful. My instructor called it Stabbing but described it the same.

Thank you. I pull bottom dumps with a small CAT motor in a Peterbilt with 650,000 miles and a weak jake. It's no fun going downhill. The advice here is what I knew all along, snub enough to reduce mph by 5, and in truck school it was said don't use the brakes over 25% of the time. In other words, riding the brakes downhill is NOT to be done.

outlawing jake brakes is just stupid, especially in an area with steep grades. safety or some yuppie complaining about noise, which one is more important. without the jake your going to heat your brakes up and then they become less effective.
@mikepech1648
@mikepech1648 6 лет назад
newer jakes are alot quieter. the old Detroits and Cummins would rattle windows in a little town at night lol. Especially the the old V8 jimmys . They sounded like a truckload of firing machine guns especially at night with area with an echo. They were awesome with straight pipes for going by your ex wifes house as well.. Other than that, just keep it in a low enough gear to hold it back on the engine. The 5 minutes your saving isn't worth the cost of the brake wear. But getting the ex may be worth it in your eyes lol

This guy has NEVER drove truck. if you go down 7% grade for 14 miles snubbing your brakes you will run out of brakes. Best rule is use the gear that you don't have to touch your brakes and never turn it loose until you see the bottom.

25 years experience here and I still watch videos like this now and then and sometimes still learn things. Great video. New drivers should be taught with manual transmissions and no jakes just to have a better understanding of how to react in an emergency situation. I've driven automatics and although they are nice, it's easy to really too much on the truck to do the work for you.

The weight of the truck tells you what gear you need to drop down into... an 80,000 lb truck and a 7% downgrade... drop down three gears... if that's too slow you could always upshift one gear... some veteran drivers do drag braking which is obsolete it's best to do snub braking even wear on the brakes and less Heat!

I'm just letting all the newbies no when your brakes are hot and you stopped your truck. Do not apply Park breaking. Specially in the winter. Chalk your wheels and put the transmission in reverse if you're on flat ground. Or also lower your landing gear on the trailer if you do not want to put your transmission in reverse.

I go along with everything the guy says, except I can't believe he says you should dab (snub) the brakes on a long downgrade. As far as I am concerned you shouldn't use the brakes at all. You should drive at such a speed that you only use the engine brakes. I'm talking long downgrades here I always reckon you should drive at such a speed that if the driveline fails, you can pull up just using the foundation brakes. I've seen fatal crashes where guys burned out their brakes.

Snub seems to be used due to drum brakes and probably uneven pressure released from relays,and few other imperfections
@Bendigo1
@Bendigo1 3 года назад
Snub/stab braking is used so that all the brakes help slow you, light brake pedal pressure may only apply pressure to a few brakes due to bad adjustment/mechanical issues. Stab braking is also best with self adjustable brakes because feathering/dragging does not make the cam go far enough to click the next adjustment level.

Anybody that's tried to start a fire knows u have to fan it or blow air on it to get it going. When u "stab" ur brakes it blowing air thru ur brake system maker the brakes hotter and can cause a fire. If u keep steady pressure on ur brakes, not all the way down, but light pressure and apply more pressure as needed but then just ease back off to light pressure. This will keep u from fanning the heat. This guy reads from a script, I've got 22yrs OTR, I go over Mount eagle 80k all the time in truck with no Jakes.
@Bendigo1
@Bendigo1 2 года назад
That is so wrong... when you release the brakes you give them time to cool. If you keep pressure on them, they have no time to cool.
@alrightalrightalright-
@alrightalrightalright- 2 года назад
@@Bendigo1 ur stupid, fire needs air to burn. why do u think when people start fires you'll see them blow on them to get them goin. So if you take the hot brakes and start pumping air on them they'll heat up then u got a fire. If you keep pressure on them, not a lot but just enough to where there's no air moving and just pressing them harder when needed no air blows on them then no fire. There is a saying don't fan the flames. This is what is wrong with trucking today , there's too many dumbasses out here that don't know shit and when someone who's been driving for 20yrs tells them something they don't listen to because they know already.
