Digging into why so many people hate big trucks, and looking into the disastrous problems, both new and old, that these trucks cause as we make the shift to electric vehicles.
NOTE: I swear, I had the thumbnail, title, and script ready before Not Just Bikes posted his own video regarding the topic. Don't at me.

I've been a car guy ever since I was old enough to know what a car is. I don't inherently have anything against pickup trucks; I own one myself actually. However, while you did make a few good points here; there are a few that you missed. First off, I want to thank you for addressing the point about how mining material for EV batteries is terrible for the environment and human rights. It's a point that many EV cultists either aren't aware of or blissfully ignore. Many of the mines that extract nickel, lithium, and cobalt are in places like Africa and China. Places that exploit slave and/or child labor and just dump their toxic mining slag wherever they want with zero environmental regulation. The added burden on our already-struggling power grid is another great point. Just a few years ago in California, which is the state pushing the most aggressively towards electrification; Gov. Newsom had to come out and issue a warning for people NOT to charge their cars because California's power grid was overburdened. Of course the problem with America's power grid is also something we have to address before the influx of EVs starts causing rolling blackouts across LA; and I agree with another commenter here that we should explore more nuclear power options. It's much cleaner than coal or even natural gas; and far more reliable than wind or solar. I remember how shocked I was when I first found out that the EV Hummer was over 9600 pounds. To put that in perspective; the Hummer H2 only weighed about 6400 lbs. Heck, the Ford Excursion, the biggest SUV to come out of the 2000s; barely even cracked 7000 lbs. Sure, EVs with their batteries always tend to weigh more than ICE cars but just......damn. The comparison between modern highways and Roman roads is a bit more nuanced than you're letting on here. Even though modern highways are designed to take on heavier loads; there's also no denying the fact that Roman concrete was just better than modern concrete. Only now are scientists re-discovering what made Roman concrete so resilient. It's true that cars have gotten much bigger and heavier as the years drag on. Heck, the Toyota Corolla is now bigger than the Toyota Camry was when it was introduced back in 1985. There are a few reasons for this; chiefly among them government mandates. Sure, cars nowadays are safer in a crash than they were in the 1980s; but the things that make them safer (i.e. side impact door beams, crumple zones, stability control systems, all of the 15 airbags) all add weight and take up space. In addition; many comfort features such as power windows and full-glass roofs also add more weight. Not to mention all the pointless computerized driving aids that they have now; all of these things add both more weight and more money. And as the government regulates more of them into law; the price of new cars is only going to go up. This kinda goes into a point where I both agree and disagree with you; that being that specifially pickup trucks seem to be abandoning their traditional audience in favor of the new suburbanite one as SUVs tend to be reaching peak saturation. My 1986 pickup has a regular cab, manual locks, crank windows, cloth seats; the automatic transmission is really the only "luxury" I have. Nowadays you can buy the fully-loaded Ford F450 Platinum for over $100,000! As the years drag on it's harder and harder to find those basic, stripped-down "contractor's specials". Ram stopped selling single cabs altogether save for their diesel HD line. Nissan and Toyota have stopped selling single cab trucks altogether. Chevrolet and Ford still offer single cab 1/2 ton trucks at least. But a single cab compact truck? Those don't exist anymore in the US. I know this was kind of a long comment; but I just figured I'd share my thoughts. Cheers.

The best thing about mineral mining is that once the mineral has been extracted i.e. lithium, it can be recycled. You can't recycle refined oil into anything other than the Crisco that poisoned generations to come.

The roman roads vs today's roads is a flawed analogy. We can most certainly build roads that will hold up. The problem is no one wants to pay for them.

yeah, i saw a neat diagram of a super-durable road a while ago - but it costs like 10 grand a mile or some shit. definitely worth it in the long run if everyone's so dead set on keeping cars around, but it's hard to convince anyone to think that far ahead.

Same here. Got a 1996 standard cab 2WD Silverado ( I know,rare...most were W/T1500s...6cyl, usually no AC , half had manual transmissions) back in 2010 with 31,000 miles. 14 years later, with very limited winter use, regular maint/repairs, it still looks like a 3-4 year old truck. It looks like an S 10 when I pull up next to one of those modern monsters with 4 doors/ 4WD, 20" wheels, that HUGE Kenworth grill. I actually have an 8' bed I can use. Those quad cabs with the 4.5' bed? What's the point? Im fine with 15" wheels, 4 speed OD, rear wheel drum brakes, the Gen 1 small block Chevy, the great 350 and at 3900 pounds, it's pretty decent on gas and is pretty quick with only 255 HP/ 335 lb ft of torque. SO easy to work on.

I hate sharing the roads with these giant ass things, I drive a subcompact Geo from 1991, god forbid one of the drivers isn't looking and makes a wrong move, I'm dead. and it doesn't help that these people have a love for tailgating and reckless driving

Modern vehicles are unbelievably safe compared to cars of the 90s and earlier but this comes with a design consequence and that is shape/size. There is so much crap now to package into a vehicle that you can't build the basic commuter cars of yesterday. People also demand such elaborate creature comforts from entry level line-ups. All of this means higher cost, higher weight and so much more complexity. I would give anything to go back to the vehicle statures of the 90s, and even speed limits. They were much smaller, much more practical and were basically as fuel efficient (or better) than many vehicles of today. The trouble is, the regulators and people would never willingly take a step down in creature comforts, "safety" or government control to allow us to go back to a more practical design. And I'm not talking re-popping the 1996 Silverado, I'm talking about a modern vehicle with the size, simplicity and utilitarian ethos. Government regulation has to change, as does the culture.

All they had to do was make muscle cars the thing again. They couldve had new chevelles and firebirds been the "Image of masculinity", bring back the old American pride of cars that they and their fathers had in the 60s, 70s, and 80s, and that wouldve had all the guys that work office jobs run to these instead of having 9k pound iron boxes barrelling down the road. I would rather be rear ended by a mustang than an f250 because the prospects of me living are far better. The Firebird 2 wouldnt destroy the roads as much as the Nissan Titan does. The dudes would have the same if not maybe better fuel economy, not like they'd care since the vehicle is a status symbol instead of a mode of transport. Either that or they should have shown Americans the wonder of the Ute! Why does Australia get to hog that to themselves? We havent had anything like that since the El Camino or the Subaru BRAT (the BRAT of which is especially known for offroading like theyve tricked many Americans into thinking they actually do on a day-to-day basis)! Oh what about soccer moms? They need to run errands! Mom Vans. Station Wagons. Advertise them those. Not the Trailmaster Lariat Bighorn Super Duper Duty edition truck that carries a fraction of what the aforementioned can.

In europe our roads and parking spaces are very narrow. Now we have these big massive american SUVs on our roads that can take up the entire width of a lane or maybe even more. Our roads are made for vw beetles and minis, not range rovers. I have seen 3 accidents last month where the one in the big car feels too safe and doesnt care about others, and doesnt know how to control their tank. Its always driven by some ditsy housewife who can hardly see over the wheel, or a meathead who thinks hes the best driver because everyone dives out of his way. I dread the day where we start getting american vans and lorries too.

Great video! Another important point that was missed is larger, heavier vehicles almost always have terrible handling. I highly recommend looking into the moose test. It's evident that their handling performance is inferior. They're more likely to struggle in accident avoidance and are prone to flipping and causing larger accident and more injuries. When called out for this (which they rarely are), the fix is always a software update.

I feel like twisting my head off everytime I hear a ute get called a "pickup truck" but still, I sure wonder if there was some sort of alternative to the dogshit batteries and fossil fuels we use to power everything. Maybe something that takes the form of matter that can be replenished like petrol so we don't have to rely on batteries so much because they are awful and probably always will be... if only there was some sort of magical power source that was cleaner than actually everything, was powered by physical matter that you could transport and refuel quickly and blew everything on the planet out of the water in terms of energy efficiency. Nonono you're not allowed to talk about the obvious pick of nuclear energy in front of "climate conscious" individuals, that doesn't even exist! We clearly need magic and walking(because biochemical reactions are so efficient)

I’m so glad someone’s talking about this because no one really talks about how massive trucks are. I learned how to drive last year and one night I drove home from driver’s ed, usually I drove my dad’s car because it’s small and easier for me to manage. It was dark out and we were on a relatively busy road, it wasn’t awful but I had only been driving for a few months and the driving school used a fair bit of scare tactics so I was pretty stressed. Then this pickup truck came up next to us and I just got such an impending sense of doom. My brain just went “that truck would just roll straight over us without any problem.” I don’t even think it was a souped-up muscle truck, it was a pretty normal pickup. I doubt it was as bad as my memory makes it feel, but it scared the crap out of me as a new driver.

Yea, but cars are still a big reason. Oil companies are responsible for like 70% of CO2 emmisions but they are selling that oil to you to put in your car, if we didn’t have cars we wouldn’t be extracting as much oil but the issue is largely systematic especially in how American cities are designed

The fact that all trucks today have four full sized doors is confirmation that what the truck owner needs is actually a car. The greatest risk to children’s lives is traffic and guns. We won’t do anything to address these risks. We been in process of making those two things a even greater threat; Heavier bulkier trucks and less gun restrictions. The US is captured by and favors corporation interests because the political parties can be elected without popular support. The electoral college means a certain pro laissez-faire capitalisms party can maintain power with only a siloed minority’s support. The filibuster rules make it possible to successfully thwart the opposition when not in power. The fact that popular ideas aren’t needed to gain power means politicians can ignore pressure to change. They can do what corporations want and culture wars will give them the minority that keeps them in power. The US is backwards in many ways because of this dynamic.
