I review, breakdown and explain True Detective. I discuss Rust Cohle from Season 1, and following the release of Season 4, Night Country, I analyze the character which was played by Matthew McConaughey, his partnership with Marty who was played by Woody Harrelson, the meaning of the symbol, the impact of his daughters death and how it contributed to the full profile of the character. I also answer how The Yellow King Cult and Childress tied into the case which transformed the character.

Is Rust Cohle the best character in the entirety of the True Detective series? Or is there somebody else that you think is better/just as good? Let me know your thoughts below!

I think Rust Cohle is the reason we keep watching True Detective, like a junkie trying to replicate that first high. But it wasn't just Rust Cohle. So many great small parts in season one, from Charlie Lange, to Steve Geraci, to Reggie and Dewall Ledoux, to Erol and Betty Childress. The acting was so good from so many actors! It's really addictive!!

Isn't he one of the best characters in all TV and Film history? He's so consumed by human darkness yet he happens to be such a righteous person as demonstrated not only by his approach to solving Dora Lang's case but also by how much he cares and voices his concern about Marty's flaws as a family man.

One of my favorite decisions in thr script was to have Marty being the one to actually find the man with the scars and tell the FBI guys where that eventually saved Rust from death. So even though Rust was a superior detective, Marty too was an incredibly capable and smart one.
@ShEDDiNgmYSkiN
@ShEDDiNgmYSkiN 4 месяца назад
His near death experience changed him. He felt his daughter in the darkness. The very thing that broke him to begin with. He came back to life pissed and fulfilled at once. Pissed for not being able to stay with her, fulfilled to know she really was waiting for him on that other side. Rust was the best written character of all time. Best season of any show of all time, in my opinion.

My favorite part is when Rust wants to leave the hospital and says he'll figure out a place to stay, etc. But Marty says "it's already been handled" (i.e. you're staying with me). And I forget what Rust says, but Marty's response is "since it's apparent that you're unkillable." I just loved those moments and this season. I'm hoping for something similar for Danvers and Navarro in this season. I agree that Rust was a better (and more obsessive) detective, but it was Marty who broke the case open when he remembered the fresh coat of green paint on the house Childress was painting when he chased the little girl through the woods (I believe I'm right on that last part). Rust's response: "Fuck you, Marty" (but his tone was of admiration that Marty got something that he overlooked). I thought that was a great twist for the show and payoff for Marty (who at certain times was disrespected by Rust professionally - Rust to Marty after a confession: "Here, types these (notes) up for me."). Just such a masterpiece of TV.

Rust is the best , though for me Marty is a close second place. In a lot of ways Marty is actually more complex as a character then rust. Marty is stuck under many layers of self delusion. Marty doesn’t have as much self awareness as rust and he doesn’t understand that the darkness in his life is all self inflicted because he refuses to address his dishonesty. Nearly every time he challenges rust with his little comments, it’s actually a major signal to Marty’s own self deception or self dishonesty.

When they were in that church camp, marty 100% calls rust out without it, reflecting it on him. "You know for someone who sees no point about existence, you do fret about it a lot, and you're still panicked"
@BRANDONMUNROMUSIC
@BRANDONMUNROMUSIC 4 месяца назад
@@funnelingspace9268 to me, the whole dynamic of that conversation was that Rust was asking honest questions about existence where as Marty was making prescriptions to cope with existence. Rust is after the Truth Marty is after a good life

The writer went over and above when it came to details of the characters. Bring a Scorpio I wondered if they included such details. I looked it up and lo and behold not only is Rust actually written as a Scorpio, Marty is written as a Taurus which, if you know the zodiac, you know Taurus I’d opposite on the wheel to Scorpio. This makes Marty an opposite compliment to Rusty’s character. Best writing I might have ever seen.

Season 1 was the best season so far. This season (4) is almost as mysterious. I like that it is set in Alaska where Rust was from and went back to for some years after leaving the force. I see the Tuttles have a reach all the way to Alaska and the Spiral has been weaved in. There is a lot of play about Light and Dark. Ghosts. Danvers has lost a child just like Rust lost his Daughter. Crazy to watch a show and agree with so much a character says. And seeing MM play such a layered character instead of the hot guy cliche he was being pigeonholed into made me respect him as an actor so much more. Crazy also to think he was supposed to play Marty! Can you imagine. Him and woody play off each other so well. The only part I didn’t care for was him fkn Marty’s wife… didn’t care for that part of the story but everything else was top tier esp him telling that lady to off herself 😂 I was like damn he’s hating her and helping her at the same time. Rust Cohle loved playing victim so that is wht he slept with Maggie. Maggie definitely liked Cohle but like Marty she is very vengeful. Marty is your typical mid level manager who thoght he could like with how broken his police department was. If the ending didn't happen a decade later? The Tuttles would go after Marty's pension. Cohle played victim so much that he's lucky that Marty was ever his partner. Marty is lucky Cohle knew how how to lie on a report. Cohle also helps him not be retired with the knowledge he allowed powerful people to get away with molesting children & sometimes murdering them. Cohle was a whiner is a fact you can't escape from.

the ending absolutely ruined rusts character. it betrays his entire worldview. it also presents nihilistic or pessimistic outlook as symptomatic of emotional damage or trauma. rust is a great character, but he is only a great character until his near death experience. then he becomes a shallow, trite, stereotypical romantic hero rather than the gritty realist.
@EFCkingTom

But he isn’t a true nihilist. He suffers greatly from cognitive dissonance because he thinks he wishes to die and that humanity shouldn’t exist, yet he acts in a way to protect life of the innocent, and to search for objective truth and meaning. He acts like a philosophical Christian without noticing, in the end he embraces his role and purpose- to carry his proverbial cross. (Which is why he is so closely mirrored to Christ in the finale.)
