Great hunt guys. Bayonets were used in wars for a number of years and i believe the Marines still train with them. However, the triangle blade tells me that it had to be pre WW2. The triangle blade was used to pierce heavy trench coats and often left a wound that would not heal. So rather then bleed to death, you'd die from an infection cause the wound would never heal. Most if not all of the early war(s) bayonets were between 12 and 15 inches long. The war of 1812 they attached to the British brown bess, the French Charleville and the U.S. Springfield with a twist motion. Later the screw came in to fit all types of rifles. Usually it had free rings on the shaft that would fit around the muzzle. Which looks like y'alls. The triangle shape blade says a lot. What little i know is the least they are worth is $100.00 with some going as high as $1,000.00. See you next week.

I operate a crusher at a scrap yard. I try to watch for interesting things but it's hard cause the crane drops a lot in the hopper at once. So far I've just found coins and tokens when I'm cleaning up under it at the end of the day. If I found a bayonet I'd freak.

Bayonets traditionally did not have that clamp/bolt/nut assembly on them. That looks to have been added at some point after use (long use?) had caused the socket to have loosened up to the point where the bayonet could no longer be installed onto the barrel of a smoothbore or rifled musket, and be expected to stay in place so that the musket could be used to stab enemy soldiers. If the nut is square, then that is an indication that the repair was done closer to the time of manufacture, perhaps during its useful life by a military armorer. Hexagonal nuts first came into moderately widespread use in the 2nd & 3rd decades of the 19th century. Either square, or hexagonal nuts are possible on a Civil War era repair to that bayonet. With the square nut being far more common for that time period. Hexagonal nuts didn't truly start to completely displace square nuts until the 20th century

silver coins are hard to come by in my area unless you can obtain a permission that hasen't been hunted before and get lucky. I tend to hunt sports fields too but I go after the areas that get used a lot and have done really well on gold and silver jewelry. I love the religious pendants that are silver. Just found a silver st benedict catholic pendant last weekend and a couple silver chains too.
