I understand the frustration of Newcastle fans, but being addicted doesn’t mean it’s a get out of jail free card. Perhaps a different punishment can be applied to Tonali, but it still needs to be significant enough to set a precedence and prevent future players from doing the same. He can receive support and the therapy he needs, but to suggest that it’s even remotely acceptable to bet because he has a problem means we are being far too lenient for a potential crime.

If Bruno Fernandes did this Bryan would be baying for blood. There has got to be consistency with what was done to Toney - they can’t make the rules up as they go along.

I don’t think Brian fully comprehends how serious this is. Cricket players were banned for 7 years in the past for similar offences. Betting by players had the potential to compromise the integrity of the whole game and ruin the sport

TG a few weeks ago mentioned how he hated the weaponisation of mental health issues in sport but now when its his player he seems to want to take mental health into account.

He was using illegal betting apps to hide it from view. He knew what he was doing was wrong/ illegal or he would've been doing it on normal apps. Which isn't necessarily an indicator of addiction but it's a pretty clear indicator of having known that it was wrong/ illegal. Something that Merson said that really opens your eyes is what if a lower league player who ain’t earning the 100k wages these players are on wants to come out and ask for help, they would lose there job and ruin their life and who knows that what that player would do, there needs to be a way to help these players instead of just banning them, there’s probably addicts in the league right now using football as an escape from that

Every sport should make a rule that you can’t bet on your own sport. So footballers, regardless of which league they play in, can’t under any circumstances bet on football games. It doesn’t matter whether they’re club games or international games.

In my opinion if a footballer is betting on games that they're affecting and throwing them, then yes the punishment should be very harsh. But if a they're just betting in general on other unrelated matches or on themselves to win, yes they need professional help but I think the punishment should be far less severe

If anyone bets on their own team to lose, whether they are playing or not, they should be banned for a long time. The reason they are making that bet is because they have seen the way their teammates are training or are aware of an injury. If they were betting on the stock market using that kind of inside information, they'd end up in prison.

something i want to point out, the Chelsea fan who's all like 'well how can you tell' blah blah, there are a multitude of different tests that can be performed to determine whether someone has an addiction or not, and they are pretty robust, this is not something where someone can just be 'yeah i did it because I'm addicted to gambling' when in reality they aren't, it's very difficult to actually fake the behaviours and the patterns exhibited by addicts as a NON-addict, and anybody who claims otherwise clearly doesn't know what they are talking about. not to go in too hard on the lad, but the sheer amount of ignorance on show here for some of this is astounding, and while i don't expect everybody to know everything a subject before making any sort of video discussing the topic, you should at least have done a LITTLE external reading and educate yourself on the basics first before talking out your arse, surely?

You just cant maintain an addiction that contradicts your profession in any walks of life. Even if you drive a vehicle for work on basic wages, you couldn't be forgiven for having an alcohol addiction. His gambling addiction and profession are directly linked therefore its totally unacceptable and he should know it.

Part of any addicts deciding to go into recovery is that they did something and that resulted in them being accountable. Assuming he's an addict, if he gets a less harsh punishment what's the incentive to change?

I think any footballer who is knowingly taking such risks gambling on football is likely to be an addict. Risking such a lucrative career otherwise doesn't make much sense. Merson is wrong though, if he is an addict he has to take responsibility for his actions. It explains his gambling, but doesn't excuse it. Just for context, i was a terrible compulsive gambler, but you can't just excuse that kind of behavior.

When you are facing a 4 year prison sentence, taking a plea deal which means you avoid prison time but get a ban from football is NOT a harsh sentence. If AC Milan knew, then I dont blame them for selling him. It was on Newcastle to do their due diligence.

The FA needs to introduce a way for players to admit to having a gambling addiction where they can receive help, would then be no excuses if they are caught

No football player should be betting on football and it doesnt matter if its for his team to win or not. A player could easily convince his friend to throw a game to win big on a bet, without him being "tracked" for placing the bet himself. It should be a clear ban to the most degree every time and cases should not be individualized.

The reason they claim addiction is because in general labour laws internationally, addiction is seen as an incapacity issue and thus a no fault issue. For example alot of employees who are caught under the influence of alcohol and charged for misconduct claim alcoholism because than there's an argument that the employer should help them with their addiction before just dismissing. Think the footballers try the same argument. "I'm an addiction so how can you ban me."

Why don’t they have a 3-6 month rehabilitation course instead of a ban. You could do 3 month ban running alongside a 6 month mandatory rehabilitation course. If not attended then it’s a years ban.

Regardless of if its Toney or Tonali or anyone else, the rules have been broken, a ban should be handed out and that be that. One thing that never got mentioned on this video is that footballers are free to gamble on other sports. So why gamble on football? To gamble on football, players either use illegal betting site or go-betweens to place bets for them. This sounds like there is more than just an addiction problem. The breakdown of punishment could be better, i think. As Brian said; footballer's careers are short, and multi year bans are exessive and lead to innocent parties (eg: Newcastle and Brentford) also being punished. In Tonali's case, on top of the ban, he got a 20,000 euro fine. WTF? That's barely 2 days salary! He did wrong and needs to be punished, of course, but i feel a short sharp shock would be more effective and also allow the Italian FA to swing their dicks and make a statement; a multi-million euro fine and a month in prison, for example.
