Kim Darby did a memorable job as Mattie Ross. And Glenn Campbell did a workman like job too. All in all the whole cast did well.

I still find myself watching a John Wayne a movie for the 50th time rather then watch one of the new movies of today

You got to know the characters and cared about them. Unlike the remake where people just appear and there is no backstory. I watched both back to back again about a year ago and I stand by that assessment. All in all, the original was by far the superior film.

I saw this film multiple times as well as the remake. I thought Kim Darby was terrific.

Kinda sucks he got an Oscar for True Grit. It was definitely a mercy win from the academy. Which ruined possibly winning with his better performance in the Shootist. Hard to throw a 2nd Oscar at someone performing in a dying genre.

I absolutely love this movie! "Bold talk for a one-eyed fatman"! Hilarious!

In no way, shape, or form did Duke hate True Grit; he just wasn't completely happy with his performance; thus is why he amped it up for the sequel

John Wayne was the same guy in all his movies.

I am not real big on Westerns and there are only a few John Wayne movies I really like, and this is one of them. It's sad to hear he was so harsh on Kim Darby I thought she was great in this movie and Glenn Cambell too. I wonder what the movie would have been like with Karen Carpenter instead of Kim Darby

According to Pilar Wayne in her book My Life with John Wayne, Darby purposely set out to be rude to Wayne and others during the filming of True Grit. Wayne, for his part, called her a "spoiled brat"

Why?
@charlesbaldo
@charlesbaldo 2 года назад
@@fredrickmarsiello4395 its been a long time since I read it. But Pilar Wayne (his wife at the time of his death) said Darby was a stereotypical snot nosed disrespectful teenager who thought she knew everything and was alway making disrespectful comments to Wayne. Wayne would not want to be around her when they were not shooting.

I haven't seen this movie in years, several decades to be honest. I recall thinking it was okay but I'd have to watch it again because beyond the basic framework for the plot I don't remember much about it. My favorite western with the Duke remains The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance. Duke, Jimmy Stewart, Lee Marvin, Lee Van Cleef, tough to beat that line up.

I wouldn't say Glen Campbell did an excellent job in this role. He was definitely not a good actor. If not for that one bit of casting, this would probably be my favorite John Wayne movie. Hathaway was right about that one.

The thing about this movie that's so great is the cinematography. Just glorious, ultra-saturated colors and scenery galore from Colorado's San Juan mountains. And as fresh actors, I thought Campbell and Darby were very good. If anything, John Wayne overplayed his part to the point of distraction. But still, it's a great film - and miles above the remake - which has the dullest color pallet of any modern western in recent memory - along with a ridiculous CGI rattlesnake at the end. They couldn't even hire a real snake actor for the remake.

apparently the drama, The Offer tv show was right, getting the movie produced was a bigger soap opera then the one in the movie's story

Good film but my favourite John Wayne film is still Brannigan. I think the only person who John Wayne liked was John Wayne

Not so concerned with the interpersonal aspects as much as the product as far as True Grit I wouldn't change a thing.

How about Robert Duvall playing Glen Campell's part? And Campbell only singing the song. Not appearing in the movie at all? That was would have Been Great!

I grew up with there being new John Wayne movies. To be honest if I see none of them ever again I won't be sad. Except the Longest Day. He only ever played himself and after a very few movies it got boring. He is meh as an actor, but undeniable he dominated the screen when he was in frame. However, he is not the only actor to do the same old movie role over and over.

Kim Darby was an awful actress. I've never seen her do anything that I thought was interesting. When they did the remake the young lady Hailee Steinfeld playing Maddie Ross was much better and right on with the book.

I just didn't like her in the role but everyone else did fantastic. She came off like a stuck up and a spoiled brat but I respect her as a actress, I loved her in the Star Trek episode she was in.
