True Inspiration Behind the Dark Place
Hello Everyone!
In the aftermath of my most recent Night Springs episode I was sent down a spiral of investigation which led me to the production of this video. I apologize in advanced.
Alan Wake just so happened to have a reference to a 2004 Horror Parody series which may be a HUGE inspiration for some aspects of the Remedy. Hope you enjoy and don't need therapy after watching that show. We will be discussing Garth Marenchi's Dark Place.

Any time i think of the inspiration for Alan wake i can't help thinking of the John Candy movie. Delirious, where a writer gets stuck in the really bad soap opera, he writes for and uses his typewriter to try to escape

Darkplace is like the most rewatchable short run series of all time. Every single time I watch it I notice new stuff. They are absolute *masters* at knowing how to film something correctly, then doing the reverse of that. It's almost impossible to make something bad-good on purpose, but this is the gold standard in it. It's awesome you made this video, I've had this thought for ages and you had some great bits of info.

I noticed that too! They did literally everything they could to make it as bad as possible. It took real skill. As an audio guy just listening to the variance in the voices using different microphones and acoustics drove me up the wall lol

Have you ever read any of the Steven King Dark Tower books? as a kid a grew up watching the movies and TV specials then High School I came across a Dark Tower book and was like a Steven King fantasy novel? and it blew my mind and showed me how it was all connected in a very meta way. The tower is like spiral, the world is like something out of one of these souls like games where a lot of decay and history.

Dean thank you for suggesting the critique I believe Monty did, the 5 hour one....man so much I didn't even catch and I'm an avid fan. Two books he talked about that are heavy inspirations I'm very much gonna read. I can't remember them offhand. The first is auto fiction where you have to figure out what's real, false, etc. and there was a second.....but thank you for more to dive into.

You're thorough and he found a few, and I mean few things either you yet to touch on or a different perspective that I was blown away by and the fact he put that much work into it. Labor of love. Heck most games or films don't have that much if any anymore except our chosen few like Remedy. But do you happen to remember which two books? I'm gonna see if I can find it in the video but jw if you knew offhand?

I don’t remember seeing it on Adult Swim. I remember seeing the Bleach anime on Adult Swim years ago. I think I would remember such a corny TV series in the 2000s. But then again I was convinced Geedis and the Land of Ta was a planned TV series.

@@GamingUniversityUoG yeah I am pretty sure it was I believe it was after it finished it was during their weekly line up and sunday not during the anime blocks it was the stuff they found that was considered to mature for child audiences at best I maybe only remember maybe 2 or 3 episodes of it airing I could be wrong and it was Comedy Central but I am pretty sure it was Adult Swim because well it has that level production quality on par with the Mighty Boosh and Saul of the Molemen and other stuff on it at the time

What I love/hate about the show-within-show is that is set in a hospital. They coundn't find a good frame for the plot and they choose to somehow turn it into a medical drama. This is lazy even for Garth Marenghi.

Somehow the dark place within the REMEDY makes more sense than 2 human beings that has a Goosebumps hybrid as a son. I kind of have an antagonistic relationship with Garth Merengis Dark Place because it obfuscated another show about a horror writer who write horror stories in contrast with his life The show would be whatever he was dealing with in his family life and then the it would cut to the story he was writing, the name escaped me for years it aired on Abc Family and it was Called 'The Fearing Mind' but whenever I googled a " tv show about a writer or details About the show GMDP would show up instead 😂

yo i just recently finally played alan wake 2 recently and came across channel for some lore/ theories and I noticed something when I replayed it which i didn't see anyone speaking about online im wondering what you think about this moment in the game as i never saw you talk about it in any videos. In the dark place alan wake comes across Alex casey and when he asks them for a gun he says "no chance", and when he meets the real alex casey this same thing happens outside of the dark place. I know control mentions synchronicities etc im wondering if this is like fiction mirroring reality or reality mirroring fiction or something else idk i just thought there had to be significance to this happening i just didn't understand.
