Kevin Kelley, Owner of True Kitchen and Kocktails went viral for his rant about ghetto behavior in his nice establishment. A group of patrons insisted on twerking, standing on furniture with their hands on the glass, while people were trying to enjoy their meals. The owner than took it upon himself to scold and chastise the entire restaurant. Was he right to do so? Let's discuss...

I had friends there that witnessed him speakin to them first! Ive been to True Kitchen at least 5 times. The vibe is not ratchetness at all. Its kind of edgey and upscale but not bougie upscale..music is always old school 90s r n b and some hip hop but not a lot of rap. Good food and crafty drinks with live music some days. The moment that dj decided to play that particular song didnt mean get yo gutter ass and stand in the seat and twerk. He had a polite convo with them first and the still acted ratchet so he sd wtf he sd. And I agree. There are other spots to do that, go there. It aint about the money its about havin somewhere nice that black ppl can go to and have a good vibe. We dont have spots like that in the area. We have a lot of day party spots and clubs but not nice black owned restaurants. He already had to make an announcement and enforce a dress code that includes no furry slides or athletic gear! Cause some ppl dont have common etiquette! There are a lot of blacks that go to boomerjacks sports bar on Tuesdays and they play nothin but rap and folks aint on tables or chairs twerking! So why do it a nicer spot where u dnt see NO ONE else behaving that way? Also he was speakin in the area where those ladies were not the whole restaurant

First up, that place was packed “as if a deadly pandemic isn’t raging across the country”,,, I get how he felt , but to cussed down all of your patron’s, when all of your patron’s didn’t do anything wrong is a mucked up way to run a business. Address those were out of pocket, and if they continue “call the cops, and have them escorted off the premises.

IN MY OPINION: 1. Self Control & Maturity are what the "Twerker" is lacking.. Sometimes people think being defiant is "cute" especially when they are being egged on by others... 2. "You can't piss a person off and tell them how mad to get"... The owner was pissed off & felt disrespected, therfore he felt no need to "be nice" as he was several times prior... 3. When the "twerker" decided to "throw her a** in a circle" there were a group of women at another table hyping her up... This could be why the owner decided to address the entire dining room IMAGINE SOMEONE COMING IN YOUR HOME AND JUMPING ON YOUR FURNITURE AND DANCING... I'M SURE THE 1ST REACTION FROM MOST PPL WOULDN'T BE TO ASK ANYTHING.. THERE IS A TIME AND A PLACE FOR EVERYTHING AND THE LADY WAS TRYING TO BE FUNNY/PETTY (IMO). IF SOMEONE ASKS YOU NOT TO DO SOMETHING MORE THAN ONCE AND YOU PROCEED...... YOU ARE MAKING A CONSCIOUS EFFORT TO BE DISRESPECTFUL AND YOU JUST DONT CARE. I DON'T THINK THE OWNER WAS WRONG IN THE WAY HE HANDLED IT... IT WAS HIS HUMAN RESPONSE TO BEING DISRESPECTED. (IMO)

I respectfully submit that there are several places that play trap music during brunch and people aren't standing in the chairs tweaking. Futhermore, if we use the logic that the music dictates behavior, people would be church shouting in Chick Fil A and Hobby Lobby because they play Christian music in those establishments. There is a portion of our community who choose not to respect black businesses that don't align to there way if thinking and then they want to be offended when people call them out on it. The entitlement has to stop.

Not like you at Magic city or Bella Noche 😁

You nailed this one. I agree with your analysis. I would not have appreciated the twerking nor that tantrum. First rule of group management is to correct the individual separately, not blanket the otherwise well behaved group with censure, that lowers morale and can turn the remaining folks against your authority. Once he painted me with that generalized condescension, I would have walked out - promise you. You can either get my money or attempt to insult me, not both. The thing is, I agree with the owner, but he was hypocritical in this instance. Great content Quentin.

As a business owner he was not in the right, it is your job as the owner to set the ambience and have a clear direction of the business vision that you are carrying out. He said that he is a "upscale" restaurateur which is not reflected in having no table cloths and or place settings and selling liqour "icees" to grown folks and playing "throw dat ass in a circle" during food service. The restuarant he has and the restaurant he thinks he is running is in stark contrast to each other which is why he was confronted with "twerking" in his establishment in the first place. I am tired of folks throwing around the "we as black people" tropes when it comes to chastising black women's behavior, this man is in business to make money and he just so happens to be black he is the same kind of owner that will use the "hood" and or "ghetto" incentives i.e. "throw dat ass in a circle" & Dusee Icees to drive busniess and then when he has gotten to a certain "status" abandon it as it no longer works for him. What we as black people should start doing is not supporting vultures that will take from our community to gain Money and affluence and then turn their noses down on it once they get on.

the owner can ask the people to behave however he wants, but it didn’t have to turn into a sexist rant on respectability politics. and i have seen people act stupid at high-end establishments. they get addressed directly and dealt with according. the entire restaurant doesn’t get shamed. so, why did this group of black women need to be?? that’s the part that bothers me.

She would not have done this in Ruth Chris!!!! Why do we not respect ourselves the way we respect the "other people?" Twerking is not "Ballet!" Just classless!! Only belongs in the house or private setting! When you are a true adult, you dont get to take a break in public! And stop making excuses as to how twerking in any restaurant is deemed acceptable! That's the other issue we have.. Tell the truth and receive the truth , for it is essential to self development!

It wasn't what he said, it was how he said it. Also, his views on twerking were a bit misogynistic. Twerking itself isn't an issue. He was making it seem like the women were whores or dirty for twerking which is not the case. It was the fact that they were twerking on his furniture.

I go around telling them pull your pants up. I can't stand to see a full grown arse man with grey hair like that. I think it's inappropriate for them to be twerking in a restaurant. So if someone rides by Church or pull in Church parking lot playing back that up you going to start twerking to. It's called a time and place for everything.

This reminds me of that whole bonnet/school dress code saga from a couple of years ago. People were accusing the principle of being anti black because she refused let people wear PJs, bonnets and bodycon dresses inside the school 🙄🙄🙄🙄. I definitely think he should have just spoken to her quietly instead of making a spectacle of himself because it was inevitably going to end up on social media. However I do not believe that she would have done that in a higher end ‘white’ establishment. There is a time and place for everything and standing on furniture/twerking in a restaurant while people are trying to eat is classless no matter who you are 🤷🏽‍♀️. The ‘respectability politics’ argument has lost all meaning because it is overused by people who simply wish to escape any accountability for behaving or dressing inappropriately etc. Respectability politics is definitely an issue especially when it comes to black hair in the work place but now not standing on the tables in restaurants is succumbing to respectability politics? I have to laugh.

Funky Dineva gets it. I also think both parties are wrong. Those women were definitely trashy and wrong, and they definitely need some self-control. But I also thought the owner was off-putting and unprofessional with the language he chose to you in front of everyone. I thought his speech came off as preachy and misogynistic at the same time. Plus, he allowed the wrong type of music to play. If you want a "classy fine-dining experience" for your guests, you don't play "Back That Azz Up" at club volume levels. None of this negates the fact that those women were wrong and incredibly trashy, but I think all parties were just too much for me. I wouldn't set foot in that restaurant.

I agree with you 100% the owner of the restaurant has to take some of the heat too on this. He set the stage for the Twerk-Gate but again if ladies are going to dine in a so called Classy place they should have known better then to start twerking on the chairs, they knew they were dead wrong for that. They would not go to a white restaurant and do that because they know they would have been asked to leave. Maybe these young ladies need finishing school???

Everyone is so soft these days talm bout " he didn't have to cuss out the other patron's" meanwhile I'm watching Gordon Ramsay🤣🤣🤣🤣 but fr tho y'all missing the point, that an owner shouldn't have to ask at all on how to conduct yourself!! As a patron I would have been APPALLED had the owner come out in the middle of the restaurant and started yelling and going off. I don’t like all of that black mama cussing in front of me anymore than someone dancing on furniture. Also, I have been to nice restaurants in Atlanta that do play music and people will stand up and dance by their table. It’s not unheard of. Folks don’t climb the furniture, but partying or signing along with the music yes.

This should have been addressed to the table that was causing the issue and not the entire restaurant. If it continued he should have asked them to leave or had security escort them out. When I am at an upscale restaurant, I don't want to hear the owner lose his mind and start cussing out the whole restaurant. Professionalism would have resolved the issue without going viral in a negative way. Also, it is a room full of black women being yelled at by a black man and people are excusing it... it doesn't sit right with me.

He’s not at fault. You don’t stand on a table or chair and twerk on a glass at a RESTAURANT for ANY reason. Like what are you talking about?? No matter what music is being played. Like WHAT??!! The people who were there, I’m sure understood his temperament and were more than likely equally annoyed about the behavior the young ladies displayed. I know I would have been.
