'The one with the airplane parts' - that might as well be the Fujikawa Maru's nickname.
Airplane parts make up some of the most identifiable cargo of this wreck, and you don't need to be a plane spotter to marvel at what you're looking at here. Like many of the ships that fell victim to Operation Hailstone in 1944, this 100 + m long cargo ship was not active for very long. Launched in 1938, the Fujikawa Maru started life as a passenger-cargo ship before being requisitioned by the Imperial Japanese Navy for the war effort. Subsequently, this vessel was armed with bow and stern guns.
Today, the Fujikawa Maru is one of the most famous and most popular wrecks in the lagoon, both because of the impressive wartime cargo still visible in the holds and because the wreck's depth range of 10 - 35 m makes it easy to enjoy for most divers.
