Arguably, the Rio de Janeiro Maru is one of the highlights of any dive trip to Truk Lagoon. Whether you venture into the engine room for the gauges or not, there is a lot to see on this 100 m + wreck that lies in 35 m.
As soon as you enter the water, you can see the shallowest parts underneath you in 10-12 m, so it's easy to descend on to the wreck and start your dive. The 'Rio' had been used as a submarine tender and had only been in the water for 15 years when it became one of the victims of Operation Hailstone.
This video was shot in December 2023 during a trip with Pete Mesley's Lust4Rust Diving Excursions. We've got another trip planned in 2025. If you'd like to know more, check out the Trips & Expeditions page on darkhorizondiving.com.
On this trip, I dived the Kiss Sidewinder CCR. For more info on that and on how to get trained, check out kisssidewinder.pro.
