‘Pickering’ mango is likely a seedling of ‘Carrie’ from Lawrence Zill’s mango grove. The variety was selected by Walter Zill and he named for a mango enthusiast, Wayne Pickering. This semi-dwarf tree is popular for its productivity and the flavor of its fruit.
Special appearance by Walter Zill!
In this video, find out more information on the origin of ‘Pickering’, the tree and its fruit.

Pickering is usually the variety I recommend to friends and family that are looking for a Mango tree for the first time. not everyone is patient, and Pickering delivers fast, it is easy to keep small, so great for limited spaces. and the flavor profile, is one that most people like, your basic mango flavor, with maybe a hint of coconut. I was surprised to see in this video that Pickering has a poly embryonic seed, I never bothered to check my fruit for that. that's good news for people that enjoy planting seeds and watching them grow like that.

My first mango tree. I started growing it in Miami then after a few years transplanted it to Orlando. It's doing wonderful and produces a good crop year after year. Very compact bushy grower. Does not require much fertilizer to do well. Highly recommend.

Hello, thank you for your videos, I've been enjoying them. I currently have a Keitt, Irwin, Zil, and Pickering, and have just recently managed to get a Fascell graft to take that I got from a friends tree. I have not been able to find hardly anyone who has even heard of the Fascell, have you? So far it's my favorite mango, though the Zil (which was my dad's favorite) is hard to beat.

"what's it matter?" (says the guy who's lifes work is dedicated to harvesting mangos). if that doesn't matter, then why does any of it matter? i'm glad you raised the topic chris - even though you were essentially scolded for it. IT DOES MATTER.

Why
@NoVaCitrusGrower
@NoVaCitrusGrower 5 лет назад
It matters because if you can determine what the 'parents' are, then you could likely make a similar cross and get a good chance of another great-tasting mango -- if you have the time and the inclination. I think he said 'what does it matter' just to be funny. Parentage certainly matters to anyone who is hybridizing new varieties!

According to Tropical Acres, The seed is monoembryonic. Therefore the fruit from the seedling will not be identical to the fruit of the parent tree.

Would this be a tree i could try here in Holland?? Given i would protect it from hard frost. Or would there be other variety's you would recomend? I've been growing 3 here just from store bocht fruit but concidering they can't grow too big given they would need to stay in our house for the winter's so chances are they would never bare fruit (i think). But i would love for one to stay in the garden and grow in the full soil. I still could not let it grow to full size given i need to cover it in the winter and the bigger the tree the harder it would get 😅 Before you think i'm nuts for trying😅 Don't think it its a given fact 😅 I'm trying leechee's and citrus too 😇 And if i can get my hands on other seeds or tree's they too will be subjected to my grazyness 😅🤣 Perhaps in the future i will get my huge greenhouse for all the tree's i have grown 😇

Ha ! Waited for this one as well :) My Pickering tree is nearly 2 full yrs old and I left some fruit on it this yr...it wanted to fruit like crazy, but I removed the vast majority down to only 4--one is ripening on the counter right now. Not sure how the young tree will taste just yet, but glad to see you also show some variation in the coloring--it otherwise has all the traits of an attractive Pickering dwarf...we also need Dr. Pickering on this one ! Interestingly, my Pickering is planted right next to my Carrie...what was that variety though in between the Carrie & the originator Julie mango he mentioned ? Just want to make sure I heard that correctly... Great video--as usual ! (btw, what is that plant growing out of the top of your head ?? :) :) )
@CarnutMM
@CarnutMM 7 лет назад
Jeff I too have Pickering and I notice the tree knows what it can keep and what it can't. It will automatically drop the ones it can't handle. No need to remove the fruit prematurely. Nature is smarter than us humans.

Glad you enjoyed the video! The step between 'Julie' and 'Carrie' was 'Sophie Fry'
@jeff6899
@jeff6899 7 лет назад
L santi...I completely agree with you in subsequent yrs...but for us home gardeners to maximize flavorful, nutrient rich production, removing much of the fruit in the first 2 yrs is beneficial to throw energy back into the roots and vegetative growth...at least with artificially planted tropicals.
@jeff6899
@jeff6899 7 лет назад
Quick Question: Don't think I have found this to be completely true yet, but I know many who suggest not to completely prune a mango tree each yr, as much of the fruiting may be compromised that yr...do you find this to be true ?? I hope (may need to) to keep many of my current 7 mango variety trees smaller, though many are said to be dwarf or semi-dwarf...
@TrulyTropical
@TrulyTropical 7 лет назад
For me a lot depends on which trees I'm working with, the timing of the pruning, and the weather. Occasionally I have trimmed some of my trees twice and fruit production was not affected. Trimming small trees a couple times a year doesn't seem to affect production as long as the trees can recover before cold weather hits. But drastic pruning can shock a tree and it might not have fruit for 2 or 3 years. Such is the case with my large Hadens.
@jeff6899
@jeff6899 7 лет назад
Excellent response...I suspected that to be true...but was not sure. So your knowledgeable feedback is very beneficial--thank you !!
@jorgeespinoza3150
@jorgeespinoza3150 5 лет назад
The way I see it, the more you prune, the more branching you get and therefore the more flower panicles you get, therefore higher chances of fruiting! Plus, it's a great way to keep vigorous varieties from growing green and unwieldy and push them to focus on fruiting instead. I'm doing that with a 2 year-old Maha Chanook graft on my cocktail tree that decided to fruit this year, and I will let it fruit and trim afterwards so it won't overtake the Nam Doc Mai and Alphonso that are grafted to the same tree. I'm working a 14x16x9.5 greenhouse in Texas and the effort is starting to pay off!!
