Truma RV Water Heater Install

We've had issues with our old water heater since we got this coach last November, it did not provide consistent hot water, and required excess water to be flowing to stabilize the water temperature. We have planned on replacing it later, but I accelerated that process. After a careful review of the available options, that is other instant on or tankless water heaters, we decided the Truma system, an Aqua Comfort model, would provide us withe best alternative.
We are not totally sold on the idea of an instant or tankless water heater because, while they claim requiring less propane, that is at somewhat incomplete comparison. While I don't doubt that they use less propane than a tank type water heater when it is using propane as the heat source. The other side of that is most tank type water heaters can run solely on electrical power and use no propane in that mode. As discussed in the video, it was not a viable option to install a tank type heater due to the weight difference.
While we've only had the Truma for two days, it has been a very successful transition. It truly delivers hot water much better and more consistently than the previous style instant on heater. The temperature coming from the unit is a very consistent temperature. Terribly important is that, while it is very quick, these devices do not start the heating process "instantly". There is a short delay from the time you open the faucet until the controls can recognize the water flow and fire up the propane burner. Then the hot water still has to transit through the pipes to get to the user. With the Truma, there is a small internal tank so once the water flow starts, if you interrupt it for a short time such as shutting the water off to take a "navy" shower, then turn it back on, the residual hot water in that small tank is sufficient to keep the water hot while the burner comes back on. In short, this water heater delivers its promise of instant hot water and does it in such a way as to not have a shot of cold water before the hot water starts again.

I am happy the Truma works for you. That has not been our experience, very very disappointed. It takes at least 90 seconds to begin getting warm water. Therefore only functional in a park setting with total water and gray water disposal available. The Truma came with our brand new 2020 high end RV. I contacted Truma to discuss and possible settings that could be changed. No. They say as long as there are no error codes that is all they can do. We live with fewer showers and cold water to wash hands and wait to having lots of dishes so we don't waste our supply of water.

Not sure if this would help as a lot of this is personal preference. Two things on dry camping: 1st) We use prepared wet towels for the daily "washing" and they work fine. We only take an actual shower every 3-4 days. 2nd) Before using the hot water you can use the "pre-heat" mode which puts a liter of water in a warm/hot condition so that eliminates or at least reduces the heat up time. Our control in the bathroom has two settings: the most counter clockwise is the no pre-heat function and the next one in the clockwise direction enables the pre-heat. It does use a bit more propane in this mode but the water is both hotter and stays hotter if you care. Then you can turn that back to the most counter clockwise setting to turn that function off. We have had both regular and the Truma heaters as well as the other brand that we could never get to work right, but we all have our own ways and what works for us may not work for you.

Glad you found a solution that works for you 😃 Sounds like the overflow tube accident was a “lucky break” 😂

Greetings.... We had the Truma AquaGo installed a year ago in our Newmar. Still very pleased. We do a lot of Boondocking. The propane usage has not been a problem. We Love it..!!

This answers my question in your previous Precision 5500 review. My research is pos regarding Truma, but wish to modify/expand it for subzero living.

It has an ability to keep the burners on for the preheat. Not sure how much propane you would run through with that, which would be the concern if running from the on board tanks. They deplete rather quickly when you need heat anyway.

Hi Jim, I really enjoy your channel and have been watching about a year. Keep up the good work. Cedar Hill State Park, which you added to your intro about two months ago is 9 miles from my house. It is sad how they have not kept it up. I am glad it is start to opening up. I started on May 1 traveling. I may had been a little early. I just started this new RU-vid channel Cowboy Biker Adventures. I am new to RVing and RU-vid. I have just put up my first two RVing videos. I hope to be full time soon. I wish I had your talent. Don

Hi Jim, I guess that's why Tiffin now use the aqua-hot across the board.. My 2020 has the aqua-hot on demand which does have both electric and fuel heating elements.. I have heard good and bad about the aqua-hot systems but I will wait for time to tell. I have always had a tank on my past 3 rigs and never had a problem with only regular maintenance.. Good luck with your new system and keep us updated..

Didn't know that. I've run into a couple of people who like the Precision Temperature and didn't have the problems we had, so who knows. Hope you like it.

That old unit you had was actually an Atwood system. Atwood is now Dometic. Not sure the old unit has parts available. My pressure release valve cracked the plastic around it, on its own. It cracked through natural expansion. I think that was a weak point for the unit. I never liked mine either. It didn't balance the temperature well. ARE YOU STILL HAPPY WITH THE TRUMA.? Please advise, I need to find a replacement.

Well, actually it was a Precision Temperature unit, not Atwood. They tried a lot to help and were basically helpful, but I thought the system was worn out and did not want to replace it with the same type, so the upgrade to the Truma system. It has exceeded our expectations and continues to work well. It was a good upgrade and definitely one I would do again if needed.

Hi, could you tell me what the cost was for your install (parts and labor). I am sure prices have gone up since then, but it would be nice to have an idea. Thank you

Don't really remember but somewhere around $1400 or so as I recall. Well worth it.
