Bergoglio is not a fan of former president Trump... but Bergoglio failed to do his duty as a "pope" of the Catholic church. If it was Biden or Obama that went through what President Trump just went through, I guarantee you all Bergoglio would voice his prayers and comments.... I've lost faith in this "pope."for years now.

John, I'm saddened with your defense of the Vatican on the assassination attempt on former President Trump. I have found you honest and straight forward in the past. I would hate to think your position and that of your wife with the Vatican related to access would be a factor in anyway. A husband shielded his family and gave his life. Rome will be judged for lack of compassion. The dribble sent to media outlets is not worth commenting. Pope Francis is in my prayers.

I agree! On Sunday AMERICAN CATHOLICS went to church, Fr’s homilies, throughout this country, were filled with PRAYERS for our former president, the man who sheltered his kids, who lost his life, those that were injured, and for the soul of the assassin, were heartfeltly said, scripture inspired admonition against violence, and a reading by my parish priest came from a letter written by the ONLY catholic founding father, who signed the Declaration of Independence, on how through our blessed Lord, we were inspired to ALWAYS uphold HIS LAWS AND VALUE LIFE, etc. John is a reporter, we know not too much of how he PRACTICES his faith, I view him as I do the rest of the secular media, focused on Rome’s business.

I didn't sense John was defending the Vatican, but simply offering, as he tends to do (and which is both unusual and refreshing in our polarized "you're either for us or against us" society) a possible insight into why the Vatican made this choice. An ability to view multiple perspectives is not a defense of those perspectives, but rather an example of a mind, and heart, open to dialogue and able to recognize in the 'other' our brother or sister in Christ. Including Pope Francis, even when we disagree with him.

The matter of ordination of women, even to the diaconate, was settled 30 years ago when St JPII solemnly defined that ordination is limited to men. Cardinal Ratzinger [who, later became JPIIs successor] issued an explanation. An English translation was available, I read it at the time but IDK if it is still in print. Deaconesses in the Scripture were more like religious sisters than deacons.

According to a church official when he told of how he was called into the synod; even from a *secular* mindset of how to manage a business meeting- it was very badly done about coordination- maybe that's to be the *actual* role of the laity in running the church: coordinating such meetings; according to what at least *one* bishop told of when he first arrived for that business meeting: nobody had any idea even what *building* to go to, let alone what *room in what building*... the informing of the meeting workers was very ineptly done as far as *how* to get your research staff to the proper setting and informing them of what they should bring as research in advance! I wasn't even addressing the *morals* of that synod, but the *quality* of arranging that staff meeting!

I don't understand: In the discussion of the "Instrumentum Laboris," John Allen mentions "the question of blessing same-sex unions." That matter is already settled, is it not? Why keep asking what's been answered? Can anything _stop_ being a question, in Catholicism? Will I someday hear a Crux report mention, "the question of whether Jesus is consubstantial with the Father?" Is _even that_ still an (open) question? _Fiducia Supplicans,_ repeated statements by Pope Francis and all his predecessors, and the consistent teaching of the Ordinary and Universal Magisterium, have long-since answered the "question of blessing same-sex unions" clearly and dispositively. If, by "blessing," one means something like the blessing at the end of Mass, and if by "unions" we actually mean a grouping of two or more individuals seeking to live more chastely (and asking a blessing in pursuit of that common purpose), the answer is: A priest can bless them, and usually should, unless intent or circumstances risk scandalous misinterpretation. But if by "unions" we actually mean _the intent to engage in unchaste behavior in partial imitation of the conjugal life of the family,_ then the answer is that a priest is unable to bless such "unions." And if by "bless" we mean "convey the approval of the Church or the supernatural assistance of God towards [the intent or effort to engage in unchaste behavior in partial imitation of the conjugal life of the family]" then the answer is: Priests are unable to "bless" (solemnize, officiate, etc.) such things. And, again, that's all _firmly settled._ (Or so I thought.) Isn't it a bit _obnoxious_ to keep asking what's been answered? At what point does doing so constitute an implicit denial of the indefectability of the Church?
@susand3668
@susand3668 Месяц назад
yes, you are absolutely right. And you have expressed well what the pope's position has always been, consistent with the Church's Teaching. Each of these "hot button issues" IS settled as far as the Pope is concerned. Pope Francis has been very, very consistent in this. But as John Allen pointed out, the Church in Germany, by which I mean the powerful lay community behind the German Synodal Way, does not want to give up raising the issue again and again, hoping to wear down the pope. They won't. And there are still RadTrads who will never accept that the pope is Catholic, who seem to want to raise the numbers of their ranks by raising fears of the Synod and of Modernism and never want to admit that they have misread "Fiducia Supplicans." Thank you for such a well-articulated comment!

@@susand3668: Aw shucks. 🙂 Thanks for your very kind words. I only wish that perception were more-roundly assumed among, as you say, the German episcopate (and associated bureaucracy, I think?) and certain traditionalist movements. I also wish that it could be expressed a little more directly in Vatican communications; e.g., from the DDF. I can imagine a response being given in the form: "This question has already been dispositively answered in the following places: [link], [link], [link]. The responses given collectively carry the weight of authentic teaching requiring submission of intellect and will, per Ratzinger/Bertone in CDF Commentary on the Concluding Formula of the Professio Fidei, paragraph 3." I feel like that would be _salutary._ Thanks again, CW

The Pope likely kept his comments low-key about the assassination attempt to avoid adding gasoline to the flames. It's saddening to see American Catholics, who make up such a vibrant faith community, getting caught up in the political polarization that's taken hold in the U.S. This situation has led to harsh words and division within our community. Let's remember our shared Gospel and come together in unity.
@user-ki2vh1uc5k
@user-ki2vh1uc5k Месяц назад
Nice idea in theory. But, as long as Catholics continue to cherry pick which teachings of the Church they will obey or disobey, there will be no unity. Divisions exist because there are devout Catholics and Cafeteria Catholics. They are not on the same page spiritually. Catholics in name only usually disagree with most doctrines of the Church. They tend to embrace secular philosophies instead of Catholic teachings. Hence, they are Catholics in name only...

John, I love your work, but I disagree with your statement that the Synod on Synodality started with a personal idea of Pope Francis. In reality, it started as a concluding reflection from the participants in the Synod on Youth in 2018. I know because I was one of the participating Bishops. We were asked what we thought the next topic should be for the Synod, and many felt synodality itself was the best next topic. There were two reasons for this. On the positive side, the synod of 2018 has been a marvelous experience, and we wondered how this experience could be shared with the universal Church. On the negative side, many Bishops, particularly those from the anglosphere, were concerned about the ambiguity of the term "synodality", so it seemed like a good subject to clarify. So a broad recommendation was made to Pope Francis to do a synod on synodality itself. And, in a very synodal gesture, he accepted the recommendation. That's where it came from. Yes, it was his decision in the end, but we should not imagine he conjured the idea out of thin air.
@susand3668
@susand3668 Месяц назад
Dear Bishop, thank you for this insight! I was busy in 2018, and paid very little attention to the Synod on Young People. I will have to make up for that! Also, I believe that you-all were inspired by the Holy Spirit to hold a Synod on Synodality -- it has been distressing to see the Holy Father trying to rein in the German Synodal Way, as they charge off misusing the blessings that can be had through true synodality. More and more, I am seeing that the foot cannot say to the head, "I have no need of you" and the head cannot say to the hand, "I have no need of you." The layity need to fully embrace Vatican II, and see that we are needed in the Church. At the same time, we have loud voices on the Internet that want to dispense with the pope's guidance and the graces the Lord longs to grant us through the gift of obedience. Thank you, so very much, for your faithfulness and your ministry. My prayers are with you.

Accountability is NEVER to your higher-ups; it is to your *subordinates*, anything else is completely *pagan* in nature and we Catholics cannot have anything at all to do with that kind of a structure- not once, not ever! So thus: the USA ideologies of how accountability works are *always right* the designs of the Deity Himself on this matter are always *wrong* due to how accountability runs.

He was named "Person of the Year" by the USA's oldest gay & lesbian magazine The Advocate in 2013. Pope Francis thanked the Vatican press corps in Jan this year for reporting on scandals in the Church with “delicacy” in a media environment that he said often “distorts religious news.” Like Pope Francis, the msm across the western world loathes Trump. Their initial enthusiasm for Franks has waned and they are moderately disappointed the he hasn't achieved all the changes they hoped for.
