The SKS was designed and built in Russia. They still use it there for ceremonies. China imported and began pumping them out like mad. To the tune of 1-2 million rifles. A large amount of them were imported into the US. The design was not so great, the reproduction even worse. You could buy one of the things for $200 at a gun show. Some of my friends were licensed dealers and when at a show, seen an SKS apparently new in box. When they stopped to look at it the guy selling it told them he had just gotten it in. When he lifted it out of the box he got a funny look on his face and shook the rifle. It rattled. They waked away as the guy started stripping it down. When they walked by later the guy told them it was complete trash inside with rusted/broken components. He said it looked like it had been soaking in water, but only on the inside.
