Nicholas Burns. Finally I hear a reaction from an American that is well-thought and well articulated. Yes, the rest of the world doesn’t take Trump seriously anymore. I never thought I’d see a worse president than George Bush jr. but, well, here he is. I sincerely hope US citizens realise the extent of the damage this clown is dealing to, basically, ALL foreign relationships. Just to reiterate: Trump invited **himself** to Denmark on September 2 2018. Rushing to adhere to common etiquette, the Danish royal family issued an official invitation the next day. Crisis averted. Now, a few weeks beforehand, Trump declares his interest about buying Greenland. This is the equivalent of asking Great Britain to sell autonomous countries like Ireland, Scotland or Australia. Both Denmark and Greenland simply can’t believe this.. the thought alone is simply too absurd. Upon voicing this, Trump reacts like a spoilt kid, actually claiming that **he**, and thus the US, have been offended. Congratulations, you actually managed to offend both Denmark and Greenland, two of the finest NATO allies. Something nigh impossible to do. And no, there is no viable strategy behind this. US diplomats must be having burnouts all over the globe. But hey, China is smiling. Europe has already been turning away from the US and towards China, India and Brazil in the past two years. Alliances aren’t set in stone: if you behave like an ass, your friends will eventually treat you like one, avoid you like the plague and turn towards better, more reliable friends. And you will be left alone, watching your country sink deeper and deeper into a sinkhole of recession, depression and, eventually, bankruptcy. **drops mic**

Nicholas Burns thank you for your thoughtful and wise inputs in this debate. It is refreshing to finally hear an american who is quite knowledgeable about these relations between US and their NATO allies and who understands the perspectives that other NATO allies might have on these matters. It is of course not fair when Donald Trump rants against NATO allies for not spending enough on their military budgets, while completely ignoring the fact that the US is constantly asking these same NATO allies to send their soldiers to fight in wars that the US themselves have started. NATO allies are losing a great number of soldiers fighting for the US, most notably in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. It's quite disrespectful of the president when he doesn't even acknowledge the many soldiers of NATO allies that are returning home from those wars in coffins. Assessing the contributions of NATO allies solemnly based on $$$ spent... well that's simply not a fair assessment.
