I thought ARR was at least high C low B for the simple fact that it was a huge and complete comeback and overhaul of the orginal. I think it does deserve some form of recognition.
People unfairly dunk on Stormblood because they weren't there at release to experience all the class and gameplay reworks it brought and it's honestly sad lol Literally reworked all classes in the game, removed the TP system, Flash was no longer Paladin's only way to maintain group aggro As someone who experienced all that, Stormblood is an easy low S tier for me
honestly Biden is speaking facts, Haurchefaunt dying has such a weird stronghold on the community it was spoiled for me because people couldnt keep themselves from getting misty eyed and making thinly veiled allusions to his death coming while thinking they are sooo well hiding it. If I wanna be honest, after the playerbase hyping up Heavensward to me, it was quite dissappointing. It wasnt bad per se, but the fans acting like its the second coming of christ, something groundbreaking just set me up for dissappointment.
I was not spoiled on his death but on his death quote. I was pissed when I saw that Haurchefant said "a smile better suits a hero". Such a nothing character doing a Piccolo and then saying this legendary quote that I thought an actually important character would say.
Honestly, that's one of the 3 moments that ruined the expansion for me. My only thought at the time was: "I am a Scholar and yet the game will not let me heal/resurrect/shield this bitch". I imagine any tank would've felt similar: "Um, excuse me, I could've just tanked that, what the heck!" I utterly detest cutscene paralysis; denying me agency and forcing me to act out of character for story reasons is just not on. The next moment was when I got poisoned early on the dragonsong arc... After what happened in post-ARR any proper adventuring WoL would've been traumatised and forever have an itchy finger on the Esuna button, and a 999 stack of antidotes just in case.
@@billy65bob I get where you’re coming from. I wanted to like it, but ARR’s ending had me expecting nothing but more death and backstabbing while Cutscene WoL kept happening. And Cutscene WoL kept happening. We love a doormat who doesn’t think. /sarcasm And I kept wondering when it would get as epic as I’d been told it would. I guess I spent too much time feeling like Alphinaud’s dumb muscle pulled into Other People’s Politics, and I know a lot of folks love that but it’s not my thing.
@@Tensaihime Alphi's naivety and single minded idealism was pretty annoying to sit through. They did want to tell a story where his ideals got him screwed over and forced him to mature and wizen up. It's not really my thing either, but they did it competently enough that I'm not going to complain about it. My biggest gripe with ARR is that it sets up every subsequent expansion all at once; you get pulled into a bunch of storylines, and every single one of them remains unresolved. I remember thinking at the time "wow, typical MMO writing, can't resolve any of these plots because it would effect changes in the world, and we can't have that in an MMO can we?"
Stormblood definitely deserves better. Even if the story was a bit of a departure from the original trajectory, those extreme trials were masterpieces. The savage tier was remarkable. And we got RDM and SAM. For RDM alone, this patch is at least A tier.
StB was 2 content patches shoehorned together to make a major expansion. That's why the Ala Mhigan and Doma arcs are so disjointed. The whole expansion just felt like two incomplete expansions. The optional content, I'll call irrelevant, since most of it releases after the fact in content updates... And for the most part, when people are discussing what their favorite expansion was, it's generally with regards to MSQ
You forgot the ivalice, the best alliance raid in the game imo. As someone who started msq last year and have a fresh prospective, stormblood is way better than heavensward. Definitely my least favorite expansion. I actually enjoyed arr more than heavensward as well.
@@XboxBestBox I agree wholeheartedly. Heavensward is my least favorite of all of the expansions. It was so drab and bland. Just grey and white wherever you looked. I still hate Ishgard to this day (doing the scholasticate quests for the /spectacles emote almost killed my soul.). And that music is just Soken laying on organ keys forever. As someone who has been playing since the ARR beta, I found StB to be so refreshing when it finally dropped. It was vibrant and full of color and energy. I took my alt through ARR and once I got to Ishgard again, I couldn't help but slow my pace. Don't even get me started on the o.g. Steps of Faith.
@Kevin M. But job mechanics were at their peak in HW? And everything was definitely playable, unless PLD accounts for half the jobs and shields not blocking magic made it unplayable?
@@richardvillenuve1421 HW is a mixed bag of really high highs and completely terrible terribles. If we're talking about the peaks then yes HW contains the highest peak but that's ignoring many many other massive issues that's killing the expansion, quite literally in HW's case. If we're talking about well roundedness, SB is easily the best. The job design were not the insanity that was HW nor it is the braindeadness that was ShB/EW. That ontop of the insane amount of side contents and hardcore content they dedicate to the expansion, pretty much embarrassed HW's track record.
The flavor of Joe's Balmung RP club was funny but beyond a few off the cuff marks, I felt like the Prezzes' choices were more an opinion of the YTuber and less opinion derived from the Presidents themselves. IMO, it's more likely that only Obama would get what Zenos actually represents and the philosophical message of EW, while the Don would be more into expansions that highlight Garlemald supremacy and good raiding and Joe wouldn't have a coherent reason for his favs, which would either be ARR/HW era (he can't get a handle on the complexity of the story later on) OR ShB era and onward (he has forgotten everything before). I feel like the Don would deffo skip cutscenes, Barry wouldn't skip them but would critique the poor writing, and Joe wouldn't skip but would forget most side stuff except for the sniffable ladies. I also think that Barry and the Don would be into PvP but Barry would be better in FFXIV while the Don would be better at PvP in WoW. Something like that.
Man stormblood get disrespected so bad. Sure the story was pretty mid, but it had some of the best content and if not the best savage tiers in the game
unironically stormblood is my favorite story sure, there are better villains and story arcs and themes in the other expansions, but something about seeing all my efforts to unite a bunch of assholes into a proper army actually pay off just feels perfect. It's so much easier to have the world be endangered by a monster or EVIL, it's another thing to believably write a nuanced and fractured colonial empire that can't simply be Warrior Of Light'd out of the picture.
@@robbaskerville253 I put HW first because thats when the game was at its hardest and most fun. SB was the first expac I dipped into raiding so it will always hold that for me, but the dungeons and extremes in HW were the peak. It all went downhill from there when the newer crowd kept complaining and wanted everything handed to them. Barely any veterans like myself can even justify paying the sub these days
Shadowbringers really was amazing. Actually ended up being one of the best expansions I played, people were saying Endwalker was better the month it released due to it being new and fresh in their heads. As someone who played SB around the same time Endwalker came out I still felt it didn't top Sb story and characters

As someone who started playing around 2020, I have to agree about how over-hyped Haurchefant was. All the memes and posts about him had me thinking he was going to be a far more prominent character, but I legitimately don't remember him doing much. That said all the flashbacks didn't bother me too much and I actually liked the lvl 70 DRK quests more than the lvl 50 ones, but that could be because I was spoiled on that too.
I think part of it is precisely b/c everyone who played ARR or HW at launch have had so much time to stew on it. We had a lot more time to miss him. Its like G'raha not appearing from CT till ShB. For you, that was what? A few weeks btwn appearances probably? For us it was 6 years with no indication we'd ever see him again. So when we did, a lot of veterans really freaked. Whereas for the newer people who've played it all in basically one shot are like "Oh, yeah... that guy! He was fun." Its like stream/binging a show that originally released in weekly episodes. You don't have the same context and attachment as a newbie vs someone who watched it when it came out cus you didn't spend the time in between episodes thinking about it, getting attached, etc. But we're all on even footing now, so we'll be having reactions to characters future newbies consider not that impressive soon enough. lol
Stormblood being my favorite expansion just because I REALLY like the themes and the patches really kicked the story up a notch, it's still probably objectively a B. The pacing is unforgivable. Thanks for fighting for my baby, Artificial Obama.

I like EW but man does it really drag it's feet at times, not even so much in terms of pacing but rather creating issues where there didn't need to be. Like hey let's create another form of time travel separate from the one we already established which creates a whole bunch of issues the more you think into it. And let's not forget the Loporrits, while cute and charming certainly let's just ignore the fact that somehow Hydaelyn gave them the ability to somehow use creation magics, you know the one thing it was previously established we can't ever do due to the sundering, but hey apparently they can because, Hydaelyn said so. While on the topic of Hydaelyn, so you're telling me we explain the entire future to Venat which she herself dislikes the idea of only for her to recreate entirely despite having ways to prevent it? You're telling me she couldn't get Azem, and a bunch of others to follow her to the end of the universe and confront a depressed bird girl herself? Like really? She just accepts her fate and lets it happen despite her love for the world and everything in it, okay, sure. Don't even get me started on hermes/Fandaniel/Amon who ironically enough we fight like three times throughout the expansion just isn't a good villain, he's way to present to the point it becomes obnoxious at times and the whole accidently causing the entire apocalypse himself out of self loathing is just pretty lame. I don't hate Meteon but her being able to screw over the ones who made her all because of existential dread is such an eye roll moment, like common you could've used a Jenova or Lavos type character, something cosmic horror instead of what we got to a much better effect, something that would've shown the universe is a dangerous and scary place beyond our star but no, just angry bird girl I guess. The expansion also feels the need to explain things which didn't need explaining and somehow makes them worse, like the loporrits giving us the explanation of how Ascians added something 'evil' to their summoning method which is why they tempered people when we already had a better explanation in Shadowbringers as to why that happens. Or finally getting to Garlemald only to spend two levels there on the outskirts of the city we've been wanting to explore and visit since forever. It definitely has high moments but man it creates so many problems lore wise that I find myself asking who wrote most of it, Ishikawa apparently right? yet Shadowbringers was air tight in terms of lore consistency and yet this feels like a follow up anime arc where everything established before is thrown out the window because 'reasons' instead of tying it all together well like you expected. Also I love Emet as much as the next person, but the fanservice was way too much, stop ruining a great character by pointlessly bringing him back for extra screen time where he's made a joke, it really devalues his ending.
Yeah, EW definitely excels at being the culmination of the entire journey and really, you have to play the entire story to truly appreciate that sense of finality. Sometimes it beat you too much in the head with the sappy, emotional parts. Like we get it...sacrifice..bonds...yes we know. However, I agree with a lot of your points. It dragged on way too much and it really felt like the true threat of the Final Days didn't fully get explored. Hell, I felt like the Sin Eaters were portrayed as enacting much more horrific violence and despair than the Final Days since we only see like what, Radz-ah-Han and Garlemald get the full brunt of it? Excluding the role quests with the Blasphemies, that was basically it. And then all of the sudden, we're in a happier toned adventure throughout Labrinthyos that took way too damn long to get through in order to get back to the main conflict. It felt very jarring and a little rushed imo. I wanted the Final Days to be a much more, global catastrophe as it was portrayed to be in Ancient times, but it really never got to that level. Again, Shadowbringers actually brought upon that feeling much more with the Sin Eaters. It certainly felt like they rushed through it to wrap up the story. I liked Venat and Hythlo a lot, but again, that part of the story really dragged down the pacing. If EW didn't have such a phenomenal ending with Ultima Thule and your final battle with Zenos, it'd really would have been lower on my list, but the finale carried it pretty hard. Granted though, it does have some of the best music tracks in the entire series and I love the Moon, Old Sharlayan, and Ultima Thule as zones for aesthetics and lore. Thinking about it more, I actually think Shadowbringers and even Heavensward were better as a full, storytelling experience. EW works great as a conclusion if you experienced the whole story, but it has some big flaws that SHB and HW just didn't imo.
ShB has plenty of shit pacing too. As for time travel being separate? No it isn't. ShB time travel created a split timeline because everything G'raha did unmade the original history of the Source. That was literally the point of 5.0, to avert what had happened, the 9th calamity. It had already happened, and by undoing it, he split the timeline. His own timeline continued on and was later led by Midgardsormr. Endwalker timeline is the same because we make Venat follow the script the way she originally did, it's why she was told she was going to sunder the world and essentially had to do so, why she looked so agonized in the cutscene. Because she knew what she had to do and she did it, in order to NOT split the timelines. Also, Hydaelyn is several Ancient (whole) souls together. Nothing saying they can't create a being that can use creation magicks.

The whole Elpis section is a massive plot hole/Paradox because it openly suggests Venat only enacted those plans purely because WE informed her of what would happen, otherwise she wouldn't have taken the same course of action that she did, such as creating the moon to be a space fairing vessel or having prior knowledge of Meteon, knowledge she could've only gained from US having exposed it in the past. This is further backed up by her recognising us when we face her during the 89 trial. You've heard of the pre-destination paradox I take it? For Venat to have taken all those actions in the present timeline before we showed up in Elpis means a previous WoL version of us had already done so at another point in time which is where the pre-destination part comes in and creates a pre-destined loop, but the paradoxical part comes in when you realise that for us to be our own saviour in the past a WoL always needs to return to the past to set up the events which follow, but at one point in time the WoL wouldn't have existed to do that simply due to not existing at the start of this loop created, making the whole thing fall apart. As in, at one point in time the future the WoL came back from wouldn't have existed so it would be impossible for things to follow the same path as they do. And this is where it gets messy compared to ShB. We know that since g'raha doesn't disappear once we save the first and prevent the 9th umbral calamity from coming to pass that we operate on the multiple worlds theory, being that there are countless parallel universes all separate from another. If that is true then our actions in the past definitely wouldn't have any effect on our future, this further eliminates the idea the Elpis we visit is the same one of our timelines past, logically they CAN'T be the same one due to what has already been established prior, the timelines were already split. As far as Hydaelyn creating beings who can use creation magics, it's stated in ShB i believe that the only reason we can't use them is due to us being sundered. The loporrits would've also been sundered unless created after the fact, but if that were true it also makes Hydaelyn a massive hypocrite. Unless you forget her speech about man not getting an easy ride anymore and needing to walk blah blah. This is in reference to them being god like beings, creation magics being apart of that. Yet she has no problem giving that same ability to the loporrits? beings that shouldn't have the required amount of aether to begin with based on the entire discussion about why current day people can no longer use them. And you're telling me it took one third of the entire race of the ancients to summon Zodiark then have him rewrite the laws of the start which basically meant covering the world in a blanket of aether but Hydaelyn who was summoned by just what, 13 or 14 others somehow had the ability to sunder and create an army of beings who can use creation magics like her kind? that's just awful cop out writing.

Venat still sundered Etheirys to begin with. Without our input. Her reasons for doing such being that she and her cohorts were in vehement disagreement with the Convocation's plans after the first 2 sacrifices. This was explained in your perfect Shadowbringers, and it never stopped being relevant just because of Endwalker. The fact that Hydaelyn was weaker than Zodiark and had no ability to go "okay I'll just slightly beat them into submission" compounds that. An original timeline exists where she did all of that without input. Your character went back, if you already forgot, to investigate the cause of the Final Days to put an end to them, not to alter timelines. It just so happens that you are pushed into explaining the future, which then burdens Venat with the knowledge of what she is going to do, knowing that she will have to repeat that or risk splitting the timeline a la G'raha's timeline and still dooming the WoL's version of the Source. When you meet Hydaelyn, she literally says "and now the rivers of time converge." Weird how you omit that. As for the Loporrits. Yes, Hydaelyn is made up of the souls of several unsundered souls, all of which capable of creation magic. Nothing has ever precluded an Amaurotine from being able to summon a being that can use creation magicks. Hell, they created tools that in turn created things. And Hydaelyn didn't sunder the Ancients to take away their ability to create, she sundered them for several reasons, but one of them was because they were effectively unwilling to accept that the world would always bring strife with it. The Amaurotines wanted to live in blissful ignorance in their gilded, fake utopia where they could just magick their issues away. The creation magic wasn't the issue, it was simply the tool that facilitated their ostrich behavior. If you're mad about Hydaelyn being able to defeat Zodiark, then blame Shadowbringers. Hydaelyn's true identity and what she had done was already explained there. In 5.2, iirc. But what she did also wasn't an indication of her natural powers. It was basically channeling all she had into a blow so powerful that it not only split Zodiark but reality with it. That is what it took for her to compete with Zodiark. She couldn't on regular footing. She had to detonate a nuke just to be able to incapacitate him, which is also a factor in what drove her to go so far anyway. To cap this off, Elpis Venat is similar to the original but not the same. In *that* cutscene, her narration and body practically indicates "I know what I need to do, but I'm torn over it." She argued with a vague representation of her people, trying to get them to change their ways, failed to compel them and in so doing was essentially reminded of what she had to do. Hence the grimace when she's rebuked.
8:15 i was so mad at zenos, i couldn't enjoy the end song. I was so distracted and yelling WHY ARE YOU STILL HERE. I know, a lot of you liked him, but I did not. I was so mad, I spent 2 minutes not picking a dialogue option because I did not want what was going to happen next. I picked the line no streamer ever picked. "it ends here", because fuck you, I will not enjoy myself. Still S tier by the way
Ungh. I felt for Obama on ARR. I actually enjoyed coming back to MMO's on FF14 and ARR was pretty good. Granted, the dialogue was a chore sometimes and the story did feel tropy at moments, but it was a solid experience in perspective. I would put it on C-B tier without many complaints. Agreed on Heavensward. The fight with Thordin was very good for a setpiece and the hard version was full of moments too. Stormblood has the problem of coming after Heavensward, the bar was set too high storywise. And yea, it was rather "dull" overall. I agree with the C tier. Agreed on Shadowbringers. About Endwalker, Trump had a point on Xenos. But Biden counterpoint is valid. But I think Shadowbringers did set the bar too high and Endwalker didn't quite match it, BUT it was one heck of a expansion still. A Tier is perfect imo.
This video I'd have to give a B tier, it had decent pacing but it drags a bit and we needed a Bush appearance I think, his takes would have brought this video to the next level
Stormblood nearly killed my love for the game and rightfully earned that C rank. Kefka could not even reawaken the inspiration that expansion killed. Luckily Shadowbringers was the Elixir I needed
Honestly, Harshfart's death was the only scene I remember him from. Most of the zones in HS suck (sea of clouds is cool but sucks to traverse) and the story is good but gets outdone by every following expansion. ARR < Heavensword < Stormblood Shadowbringers and Endwalker are both amazing and made me cry even though I legit hated ARR but I think I prefer Endwalker a bit more over Shadowbringers just cuz the raids are funner imo
Pretty accurate in my experience...ARR had the benefit of being first, but was definitely the weakest. I found much of SB boring, but loved the other three.

End-game story RR is mindblowing, what blunt are you smoking. It lays the foundation for all the stories to come. If it wasn't for RR I wouldn't been playing FFXIV 9 years ago. While the story does start slow, once you reach 1.7 and onward, it's getting good. Most of the time ppl are making the mistake not to pay attention to the story and by skipping you're missing huge leads to the end.
Ah yes, you have to reach 1.7 before it gets good. I have to be honest, if I gotta play through a story that long for it to get good, maybe it's not as good as people say it is?
@@ShowMeYaMovez You don't have to reach anything tho. The game isn't made for milestones. The story start from the beginning until Endwalker. Just because some random dinglberries doesn't like this or that during patch cycle, doesn't mean it's not good. There, will put it this way; the story in this game is made for ppl with less than 40 IQ. The rest is pointless to explain as tha game won many rewards during all these years.
I'm going to have to agree with Trump regarding EW except the ending. It is a B expansion at best, pacing was bad and quite frankly the threat of Meteion's song was not really emphasized on the planet enough. You see a few areas where they have turned dark but nothing more, I'm not saying every area has to drastically change but at least should have had a change in its sky for all the areas until the end of the expansion. If anything the ending with Zenos was its saving grace, since it is essentially a reminder that despite everything that has happend, the Warrior of Light will always be an adventurer first and foremost, not a messiah.

Everything to do with Amaurot and Hades is far better than everything to do with Ultima Thule and Endsinger, but everything to do with Elpis and Hydaelyn is far better than everything to do with Kholusia and Innocence/Vauthry.
Can't agree with every little point, but for the most part I gotta give it to Trump: Can't Coddle This Series Like a Little Child Forever. Excellent game but with flaws, as all good things should.
