In partisan primaries, voters choose the candidates they prefer for a political party to nominate in the general election." "A closed primary is a type of primary election in which a voter must affiliate formally with a political party in advance of the election." So in this case the perp had to registered Repub in order to try to make sure DJT did NOT win as the candidate for the Repubs side in the general election by voting for someone else. (All the states have different systems) .Basically in a closed primary state you register with whichever party you want to have a say with for picking your "pony" (primary election) for the "race"(general election). It is very normal in a closed primary state to be registered with the opposite party you prefer because you have to do that in order to vote against the candidate/s you don''t like.
