President Trump has arrived in the UK today for a state visit.

Before the visit, President Trump told the Sun newspaper that he was backing Conservative Party leadership contender Boris Johnson to be the next UK prime minister. He also told the Sunday Times that Brexit Party leader Nigel Farage should be involved in the government's negotiations to leave the EU.
How should Theresa May play this state visit? And how will this affect future UK-US relations?

Apparently you don't know what the US is: an independent, sovereign nation whose regulations and laws aren't dictated to it by un-elected bureaucrats in a foreign nation. I do understand your point, but it was only relevant to the USA in its earliest years (pre-Civil War) when it was still widely considered a loose club of "sovereign states" like Virginia, Pennsylvania, etc. The Civil War with the 600,000 people it killed changed the USA into what we think of it today, and I don't blame Britons for wanting their nation to remain the UK instead of the UK being turned into the equivalent of Virginia, Pennyslvania, etc. in a big country called the United States of Europe.

@@richardbostan4286 USA is *a federal union* , so the states are not sovereign. The EU is a union of sovereign states, so it has no federal government and therefore no President. The commission is just the EU's civil service.

It's not bias when you have a man who preaches anti-establishment rhetoric but is happy to stand next to one of the world's leading establishment figures. Nigel Farage doesn't want to take back control and give it to the people, but rather give that control to corporate businesses. This would also explain why Trump's interested in the NHS and want's a deal with Buffoon Boris so that Boris can sell a portion of the NHS as part of the trade deal and completely privatize the UK.

earth star mainly the framing. They said “potential embarrassment” which I guess you could technically argue gets them exemption from being called bias. However, would they have said the same if Trump was meeting Jeremy Corbyn or some other notable politician? I don’t see why they would. So why would they say it about Nigel Farage? Why would a meeting with Nigel Farage cause “potential embarrassment”? To whom? Nigel Farage supporters? I doubt it. To remain supporters? Well they probably don’t support Nigel Farage, so why would that cause embarrassment? Read between the lines, it’s clearly a snub at the two of them by an embittered neo-liberal BBC.

Stop calling him "Boris". They don't call anyone else by just their first name. They don't just say "Nigel" or "Jeremy" or "Theresa" or even "Donald". But Boris Johnson gets a licence to have only his first name said.

you can't really complain about foreign election meddling when the president says that he likes Boris Johnson when state news outlets like the BBC and CBC so frequently show such biased portrayals of politics and politicians in other countries in which their programs are accessible. During the 2016 elections, here in Canada there were many times where the CBC flat out dismissed that the controversies around Hillary Clinton were legitimate. I remember on one occasion hearing a program declare that there were 'no emails' in reference to the John Podesta DNC emails, which was a blatant lie about a very undemocratic act her campaign had commited. Meanwhile even the most miniscule of Trump controversies were emphasized and fixated on. Trump(who I hate) had his faults emphasized and his controversy justified, Clinton had her prestige emphasized and her controversy downplayed. These are state sponsored news outlets that had reach into the same countries they were commenting on, influencing the voters and public opinion within those countries. Despite that, those reporters and commentators and politicians should be able to voice their support or contempt as they please for whom they please, and so should a sack of shite politician like Trump, especially when he was not making some official Whitehouse statement.

I love the BBC's neutrality on names. It is Trump and it is Boris. Psychologically, this gives Johnson a big advantage. All the commentators here follow the BBC's lead and refer to him as 'Boris'. This smacks of the establishment setting up their own best candidate for damage limitation.

patrickcon1, it depends on the level of animosity among the British people. If the majority hates Trump then Trump’s endorsement of Boris could be a big negative. Maybe Trump knows that and he doesn’t really want Boris to be prime minister. Time will tell.

alice - At first I didn't know what you were talking about, but googled Mr. Bean and found out it's a British comedy show. You Brits have some good comedy shows. When I was growing up, we used to have reruns of Benny Hill on US TV, but weren't allowed to watch it, because we had strict Christian parents and it showed scantily clad women. Looking back, it probably wasn't appropriate for kids to be watching, but today that show wouldn't even be considered obscenity. It's nothing like the filth they show on TV today that children are exposed to.

I really feel sorry for our three panelist because Kirsty Wark sounds tired, under informed, and just out of sorts. She has nothing new to sugest we talk about. @richard smith The Civil War was a muddle, true. The Southern states seceded because the powerful slave-holders who ran the states saw the writing on the wall, that staying in the Union would eventually cost them their way of life, so greatly tied to their plantations and slaves. At first the war was fought about states rights to leave the Union, but by the end the rallying cry had changed; it was more about freeing the slaves. It's one of those mixed legal/ethical questions that many don't care to examine very closely. It worked out for the best, but states' rights took a major hit.
