Trumpcare Could Cost Disabled Americans Their Independence (HBO)

The GOP’s proposed alternative to Obamacare includes drastic cuts to Medicaid, and changes the way the decades-old program is funded. If the bill passes, it’ll have a huge impact not just on the millions of Americans living below the poverty line, but also on another group: the more than 10 million Americans with disabilities. Caroline Modarressy-Tehrani went to Pennsylvania to meet a family whose independence depends on Medicaid.

Taye Trotman They don’t get everything they want unfortunately. If you need care, you need care. If they want to take care of you in a residential ward so be it. That’s their decision for your care. If they feel that you cannot take care of yourself properly they’re well within their right to tell you to move to a hospital / institution. That’s life.

It's bad enough America one of the most richest countries in the world. But not having free healthcare for it's citizens is disgusting. It's hard enough living with a disability generally and then have hardworking, inspirational, amazing people like this guy. Who despite everything just wants to make something of his life. Our NHS ain't perfect but it is there and there are services to support people. I am truly so sorry to all you people in America who don't have access to pretty much a basic human right. The stress and worry of having massive bills put through your door if an emergency happens or not even being able to afford health insurance. I have a few family members who live in America and them telling me what the healthcare system is like out there something needs to change. Because it's not fair.

For anybody who has any knowledge of economics, the figure of 18% of GDP is astronomically high. 18% of GDP is the portion of the Gross Domestic Product spent on health care. If the government spends more then that portion will rise and the rest of the tax paying economy will shrink by the same amount. The overall picture is grim. Shouldn't the solutions come from the health care industry itself? They seem to have no interest in the effort but to grow and charge more for the services. Its time the health care industry offered solutions, not the bureaucracies of the Federal government.
@guskalo1981

18% is by far the largest share of healthcare expenditures as a percentage of GDP in the OECD, and the rest of those countries have some form of universal coverage.

Jeff so I should not have a good quality of life simply because im disablted I was born at 27.weeks premature with all kinds of problems should I die becuse I need Goverment help in order to live somewhat of normal life besides I'm lucky to investments and my parents inheritance which will keep me going when they die also you really think charities are enough to help people just somone can't work and is economically a burden we should kill them or dump them on charities the Western countries like America can afford it your telling me your not willing to sacrifice some of your money so I can have some what of a decent life it wasn't my choice to be born at 27.weeks premature and be on a machine for one month.and to have severe heath problems anxiety fine motor problems memory problems

@Jeff A I completely understand where you yourself are coming from. • Why would anyone ask for you to bear the costs and consequences for life choices and actions you're not responsible for?! Your responsibility is for your own Life, Liberty, and Pursuit of Happiness, not someone else's right to do so. That's on Others to do so for themselves... I can't imagine being a Special Needs Parent, being in their circumstances, or the Stress and Nightmare scenario they imagine for the future. I can't imagine what they do when most reach 60 years old and beyond. Retirement itself and the benefits that go along with that is pretty much out of the question for most Special Needs Parents. Special Needs don't Retire after a certain age. After all, Disabilities don't understand that Mothers and Fathers want and need Rest and Relaxation. You also have wonder; What happens if for whatever reason, Parents themselves become Disabled?! 75% of Parents know they cannot realistically ask Other Adult Children, Other Family Members, or any Friends to take the responsibilities of their Daughters and Sons since they themselves have their own Lives to manage and they don't have the Financial wherewithal to do so. If this so called Pandemic has taught us anything; The underlying reasons for these problems is the collapsed Ponzi Scheme Entitlement System, the other Laws or Decrees that didn't take into account of Unintentional Consequences for the Financial Costs for not just the Disabled, Childcare, and Eldercare. Also, the Infrastructure, Personnel, and Economic Realities for sustainability of this type of Safety Net System. The Pandemic has exposed that the Care Model System has been upside down for decades, Wages and Benefits aren't competitive, and the Money allocated for these Services was grossly squandered for Political reasons. It goes to show you, Life has an Expiration Date but Special Needs doesn't...

Do you drink alcohol or smoke cigarettes? This should immediately disqualify you from any socialized medical subsidies. Is your BMI and body fat levels in the morbid obesity range? Also a disqualifier. There is no sense in making people pay for the healthcare of other people who do nothing to take care of their own health to begin with.

The ACA was shittty because it still meant delivering healthcare through private for profit insurers which can't work. It was good in that it made it illegal to discriminate against sick people by denying them coverage which is undoubtedly good.

If 30,000 - 40,000 people dying annually from preventable causes related to not having health insurance isn't a good reason, please explain to me why should I give a shit about any potential terrorist attacks or crime trends that go on here domestically? I mean, people have been killing each other for over 200 years here and everything has been fine. how did everyone do before the travel ban, for example?

I disagree with the concept of taking money out of taxes and giving things to people that do not deserve it. Health care is not a right, it should be earned and paid for in a mutually agreed contract between either the employer and the worker or the person purchasing the insurance from the insurance company. If someone does not like the service they are getting they should be free to choose another company. If we simply force doctors / insurors into a poorly devised system it will turn out like it is in other countries where the service is low quality, and takes an extremely long time to get care. Just because we get rid of Obamacare doesn't mean we get rid of insurance for people. They can still buy it like everyone else has since health insurance was created, in order to prevent becoming bankrupt from an illness. We need to get more people working and not just collecting. I have a heart and feel for people like in this video who may not be able to work and buy their own insurance, but that is not a fair example of why we need this for EVERYONE. I would agree with creating a system for people to have free or subsidized health care if they have mental or medical issues preventing them from working, but I do not agree with excuses for laziness and the ability to sit around and collect.
@raddudeman1652
@raddudeman1652 7 лет назад
"I disagree with the concept of taking money out of taxes and giving things to people that do not deserve it" So do you oppose the Senate Bill then? Because it still resumes the Medicaid program and Medicare and keeps the costly regulations. It just does it in a way that is less effective to the intents that Obamacare was aiming for, while definitely not resembling a true free-market system. "Health care is not a right" Indeed, but it shouldn't be a prerogative that excludes millions of our citizens either. ", it should be earned and paid for in a mutually agreed contract between either the employer and the worker or the person purchasing the insurance from the insurance company." Why should employers be responsible for providing healthcare plans to their employers in the first-place? Or even having a system reliant on insurance coverage? For someone who has a very pro-individual bent, you sure do like more collective-powered base entities. Why not just get rid of insurance companies and employer provided plans in the first place, and make consumers and patients pay directly? I mean, that way they can actually say they're paying their fair share and not short-handing their doctors (like insurances often do). "If we simply force doctors / insurors into a poorly devised system it will turn out like it is in other countries where the service is low quality, and takes an extremely long time to get care." Obamacare doesn't affect Doctors. What's so poorly designed about Obamacare that's ruining the quality of services, which the Senate bill doesn't also share / keep? The US comes in 70th for healthcare delivery. Among OECD countries, it has higher average wait-times for physician visits than over a half-dozen countries. Healthcare premiums even doubled between 2001-2008. Yet, we still have a low old expectancy rate for a developed country, as well as infant mortality rate; all while having the highest per-captia spending for healthcare. source: " They can still buy it like everyone else has since health insurance was created, in order to prevent becoming bankrupt from an illness" the leading cause of bankruptcy in the US is actually from medical bills (62.9%). According to a study by the The American Journal of Medicine in 2009, of those who declare bankruptcy for medical-related debt, 79% were insured, and 60% had private insurance. source: www.amjmed.com/article/S0002-9343(09)00404-5/fulltext "We need to get more people working and not just collecting." 64% of medicaid recipients are either children, blind, disabled, or elderly. Most States don't offer programs that cover single adults regardless of how poor they might be. 80% of Medicaid households include working members. Furthermore, only 54% of private employers offer health insurance plans. The idea there's a mass of 'free-loaders' out there that do nothing but collect government 'welfare' their whole lives is a myth. There's no such thing as government welfare handouts that any jobless person can apply to. There's SSI for the disabled which practically always requires you to get approved by a judge and social worker based on your disability, and there's TANF (which only has 4 million recipients) which has a lifetime cap of how long recipients can take it, is only eligible for select families in certain circumstances, and has work-seeking or required job-training / education attendance, and consists of small stipends of one-to-two hundred bucks.
