Greetings David and thanks for your nice feedback! I'm so happy you found the video helpful. It was a busy year driving to all the different music stores here in Europe, but a necessary process to discover what I wanted/didn't want in a horn. I couldn't be happier with my custom Adams A4 :-) All the best! - JB

Thank you for sharing all of this. It's so fascinating how all of the horns sound so different. I've played a ton of them myself, and I'm still hearing so many new sounds from different setups. It's so crazy how personalized a sound can be. From my headphones, which are just basic Sony over the ears that you get from Target for $10-20, I think the James Morrison sounded the most like I would want to sound, which is just a little more fullness and zip than my Bach 43. Really amazing video. Thank you again!

4:23 and 12:05 were the best to my ears. Effortless and clean in high and low registers with fuller dark bodied sounds. The first Bach out of the two in the late middle was third. You have a good feel for the horn too. As of 13-years ago, I can no longer play due to a facial paralysis thing; but my ears tell me you are an excellent trumpet player with feeling. Thanks for this video as I would have never had the opportunity to hear so many trumpets.

Joe thank you for sharing this journey with us. I was in Rotterdam last October, I didn’t know Adams was right there 1.5 hrs away!! Dang it! Anyway, I’ve tried Adams trumpets before and really liked them. I can see why you went with them for a darker sound and with Shepherd’s crook and lacquered bell...great choice. I also really liked the way you sounded on the Schilke S42, S32HD and S22HD!
@JoeBabiak
@JoeBabiak 3 года назад
Greetings Johnny and thanks for your nice message! I'm glad you enjoyed the video! Yea, Schilke's are very clean sounding, surprisingly dark, and very consistent from low to high range. But for me, Adams was the the way to go. Especially the A4 with there shepherd's crook. But the materials and sizes also made a noticeable difference. And finding the right combination of everything took some time, but it was well worth the wait! Next time you're over here, definitely stop by Adams. It's an amazing facility with an awesome staff! All the best! - JB

Difference is only for player. I got 4 completely different horns. Recorded myself on same microphone setup, same room, same mouthpiece. Listened to it and all sounded same. When I've played them I heard diffence and had of course different feel of blowing, valve response. As I've said, on tape they all sounded same. That's why Clark Terry, Wynton, Randy, Lee, Miles, Maynard... you name them, they sound like themselves. Doesn't matter what horn. Like shoes. Some are more comfy than others. But we still need to walk. Thanks for video.

I hear a noticeable difference (on this video) between many of the horns I tested. If you don't (as well as with your personal recordings), that's okay. That's the thing when it comes to personal opinions; there is no right or wrong. To each their own.

Hi Joe, I listened only to 5-minutes. I’m sensing you really wanted one of the Schilke’s to work for you. It sounded like the sound & resonance of the Schilke’s you played was trapped inside the instrument. The most open, warm and projected sound I heard you produce was from the Kühnl & Hoyer (which you only played for 3-seconds at 2:55!)
@JoeBabiak
@JoeBabiak 9 месяцев назад
Greetings! Initially, I liked the Schilke’s; they seemed to be very responsive horns and very even sounding from low to high. But the more horns I tested, the more the Schilkes fell into the background. I released a second comparison video in which I found my current horn (which blows all the others out of the water!). Check it out here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-zG4XrM8PqOg.html

Enjoyed your ‘trumpet safari’! Sounded most comfy on Schilke S22HD + B7, Schagerl JM1 + Gansch Horn, ACB Coppernicus and and Adams A4. I am thankful to have a custom A4 LT-S (with Shepherds Crook), Red Brass bell in ML bore and think it is the best ‘fit’ for me out of all the horns I’ve ever played. I also has an A4 SC in L bore that I though was fantastic, but ultimately enjoyed the blow on the ML more. Stunning what Adams has done in the short time they have made trumpets. They are just fantastic! Enjoy every note!!

This was a fun and educational video. Joe's choice of the Adams A4 would have been my choice, as well, if I were in the market. I also liked the Schilke B7. My choice of mouth piece is a Bach 1D Megatone. I play a Bach LR180S37 and the Adams sounds a lot like my Bach, or, the other way around, if you prefer. In any case its was good to see so many models played.

Wish there was a little more of you playing the Red Brass with Shepherds Crook. Did you just not like it right away? How much of a difference would you say the red brass makes versus the gold brass?
@JoeBabiak
@JoeBabiak 2 года назад
The red brass shepherds crook was the 2nd custom A4 they made me. Nice looking horn for sure, but the sound was too thin, bright, and scratchy/raspy sounding for my taste. It was pretty much the opposite of what I was going for. The gold brass however, was much more to my liking with a rounder and smoother sound. Plus, I find a noticeable difference when the inside of the bell is polished (which the red brass' bell was not). To my ears, the polished inner bell gives a nice glassy/buttery sound that I really like (as can be heard on my final A4). Thanks - JB

from a retired pro... I don't own an Adams, but I have played one. Adams makes great horns to suit everyone. I prefer the sound and feel of the A3, but I have yet to try the new 'balanced' model. Across brands, the differences in sound is very small. So to reach a decision, I would weigh many factors.
@JoeBabiak
@JoeBabiak 4 года назад
Hello Rob; it's always best to go and actually test horns in person. Depending on the size, weight, materials, etc, I found the sound differences between brands/models to be quite vast. I mean, a trumpet sounds like a trumpet (as opposed to an oboe). However, the nuances and sonic characteristics between trumpets can vary greatly (in my opinion/experience).

To me, the Adams A4 was more free-blowing, warmer, and darker, which was exactly what I was looking for. Between the 2 Lotus models I tried, I did not hear/feel much of a difference. The A4 immediately spoke to me and I couldn't be happier!

@JoeBabiak
@JoeBabiak 2 года назад
Hello Jim...it's not that I didn't like things about the A4LT, it's just that I preferred the character of the A4 more so. The A4LT had a very nice dark sound with a solid core. To my ear, it was more directional of a sound. The A4 (particularly my custom A4) had a wider spread of sound. The L-bore A4 was hands down the most free-blowing horn I have experienced (more than the A4LT), but then again, that's exactly what I prefer. As for sound, I found that the polished inner-bell of my horn really gave my tone the smooth/buttery quality I wanted, more so than any of the stock A4s or A4LTs. Hope this helps - JB

@JoeBabiak
@JoeBabiak 2 года назад
@jim nolan - Hey Jim, I wonder if the A4LT you're testing has a yellow brass bell? That could explain the brightness. In my case, Adams was kind enough to build a few custom horns for me (with no obligation to purchase) so I could really test the different size & material combinations. This was crucial; to A/B the differences in sound (process of elimination). I would suggest playing/ordering a lacquered, .50 gauge, gold brass bell (polished inside), with a shepherds crook. Perhaps even with the larger 5.5 inch bell. In my opinion, that should darken up the sound nicely.
