When I played, I would give my trumpet a luke warm bath once a week or so with all the valves and slides removed and do them separately and dry it with a soft cotton cloth. I used Roche Thomas valve oil but recently tried Do'c Juice by Monster out of curiosity. It's OK but I didn't noticed any difference. I use plain Vaseline on the slides which I find works better than oils. Just use a thin amount and wipe off any excess. Clean the mouthpiece after each use with q-tip and a pipe cleaner and once in awhile use mouthwash/cold water rinse. Always keep a soft cloth in the case to hold or wipe down the trumpet. For new students, check the range of mouthpiece best suited for you. Generally a 7C in considered a good all round mouthpiece and is what I always used. Here's a few basics: Parts of a mouthpiece: www.google.com/search?q=trumpet+mouthpiece+size+chart&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjpxvfBsIrcAhUTMH0KHTUMB9IQ_AUICygC&biw=1713&bih=910#imgdii=kz61lDiTAlIdaM:&imgrc=g16EfA2qRutNYM: Cup sizes: www.google.com/search?q=largest+trumpet+mouthpiece&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwifyLGIo-PaAhVP9GMKHXz7DPsQ_AUICygC&biw=1728&bih=922#imgrc=mpMhJGj12McKhM: www.google.com/search?q=largest+trumpet+mouthpiece&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwifyLGIo-PaAhVP9GMKHXz7DPsQ_AUICygC&biw=1728&bih=922#imgdii=ej4g1U5XRbBQDM:&imgrc=mpMhJGj12McKhM: Hope this helps,

You should never ever put a wirebrush into your casings!!! This will not only grind away any dirt, it will also grind away the brass making the valves leak and rattle on the long term.
@Jaegertiger

AGREED !!!!! I shudder to think that one is GRINDING metal out of their valve slides. Ultimately, you will have a horn that will not play, because you have ground-out enough metal to cause leakage (the ENEMY of all things Trumpet). ALSO... do NOT use valve oil on the slides. There are specific valve slide grease(s) available that are superior by far. I use a Lanolin based grease that I got from Vincent Dell'Osa ("Trumpet Man" in Philadelphia) back in the mid-1960's. It was the best grease I have ever found. I am convinced that the Lanolin is a key ingredient.

that's probably why there was dust every time he pulled the brush out.

that really helped. try making a video telling us the best type of trumpet cases. so far to be bach cases are the best. because the outside is really hard and the inside is comforting and has tons of storage underneath the trumpet.(its still inside the case)

Nice Demolition Derby @ 9:00 ..."KLINK!" Good way to potentially damage precision parts.

Brad K ....AND, as Ramon below said, metal wire brushes on your valve casings, and slide tubes will RUIN a trumpet in NO TIME. ...AND, using a garden hose with a brass tip...something's bound to get dinged sooner or later. ...AND, shaking the hell out of the horn like that will either get the horn dropped, or bracing/solder joints busted. Other than that, great video, LOL.
@eveeve8254

Wow, nothing you said is actually true. Way to fail on all fronts man... Thats an accomplishment in itself. First of all, wire brushes are perfectly safe. Wire brushes are used to clean brass and other metals in pretty much all industries.That it damages the casings and slides is an ignorant myth. The only thing you gotta take care of is the tip not hitting the sides, as he is explaining carefully. If you ruin your trumpet with that, you're most likely too stupid to clean the instrument yourself and should seek help of an adult. Same with the other points. Especially the "Klink!". Nothing in that motion would damage anything ...AND, if you're not capable of shaking out a trumpet without throwing it across the yard, see above point of seeking the help of an adult.

Hey, you're welcome to your opinion. You can do anything you want to your horn. Just don't do it to mine.

05/03/21-I’m a guitar player and just acquired two trumpets (and a clarinet and a violin). I had no idea that they need so much maintenance. I think I’m going to stick with the clarinet and guitar

The Garchomp Tamer I’m obviously a little late, but if you’re yet to figure it out, or if anyone is curious, I’ll tell you what may be the issue. Before you put the piston valves back in, make sure they’re in the correct order (each typically has a number on the piston). After they’re put in, twist the top caps until the valves “click” in place. This allows the passages in the pistons to line up, allowing your air to go through the instrument.

I feel so much less afraid of cleaning my dear's Getzen now. Thank you so much. Questions: are you using an old white all-cotton sheet for the cleaning cloth? Are the wire-bristle brushes (the ones with the sharp bristles) typically available at instrument rental places? What do you think about those spitball cleaner balls?

Could you do a video on how to remove tuning slides that have triggers? Say like a Besson BE928 Sovereign?
@Dizzyphan
@Dizzyphan 5 лет назад
Nylon bristles are better than metal. Metal will remove brass scratching it out. I'm surprised this video isn't recommending brasso or steel wool for polishing the slide inner tubes shiny? LOL. For straight brushes the 99cents only stores carry a "pipe brush kit" used for soldering copper pipe. Comes with 3 brushes of which two can be used in trumpet pipes. The 3rd one looks like a BBQ sauce brush so don't use that one. The 2 you can use look like pistol barrel brushes but again bristles are nylon. Using a cloth like in this video is good for drying more than cleaning. If you're not using a swab like from Bob Reeves shop a couple times a week and your playing daily I recommend a full horn cleaning bi weekly.

My friends little sister plays trumpet. Her brother kinda sprayed valve oil outside and inside the trumpet. Does she do the same thing as what you showed us or does the trumpet need to see a professional cleaning place or does she need a new trumpet?

Pbnj give it a bath and a good rub down and it will be fine. Valve oil doesn't damage the trumpet in any way. So it will be fine if a bit oily
