Hey how awesome that they sent you a bell mandrel to try out. Even though this is still a really small channel, it's a great advertisement for a niche market.

I don't repair instruments. I don't even play one. But your videos fascinate me. Your style and presentation scream pure professionalism. Besides, anyone with as many cool hats as you have can't be bad.

Wes you give me hope in watching this video. I like how you go about explaining what you’re looking for as you work and going slowly. I find this one especially informative to see how this is done as I own a Bach Stradivarius 180S37 bflat in silver. It has one dent in the bell and one at the first turn. I won’t explain how the dents got in it but it made me sick. Because of the value I never trusted anyone to touch it. It also didn’t help when one of my band mates had the same thing and sent his out because the front brace popped off the bell if I remember right. The one thing I do remember though is the butchery when he got it back. It looked like someone trying to weld when it was set too hot. It almost made me want to cry seeing that. This was my instrument through high school. When I was trying to decide which it was going to be a Doc Sevrinsen or the Bach I was fortunate I could try both from other band members. I fell in love with that Bach sound and never regretted the choice. There was a lot of hours spent with that trumpet.

Damn Brother, I would have thought that trumpet toast after you turned it to the camera's eye. I've always bought used, less than perfect instruments thinking that with some care, the wrongs may in time be righted. Sure that the tools your promoting are more costly than most imagine, but I've seen where your inventiveness has won out over odds that few may have to contend with. Great job sorting out that poorly mangled brass bell. You must wanna clobber folks at times when you see the state these things have been left in. The burnishing tip with the steel rod around that bend was genius. It gives me hope, though I doubt I may never reach your facility with these repairs. Your awesome.

Great channel and content! I haven’t played an instrument in decades, but I’m wired such that I really enjoy watching repair and work on different equipment and things. It’s entirely possible I may pick up something that works in a different application. Thanks for the effort!

Hiya, Wes. Love watching you work - I've only been doing instrument repair for a short time but it is absolutely fascinating. I do have a question about using the P50. When I use it for trumpet bell bow work or on trombone tuning slides, I've found by propping the tool vertically on the work bench or on the seat between my knees, I can keep a light-moderate pressure on the tool while I hammer the high spots. This tends to push the ball through at the earliest possible time and I'm able to go immediately to a larger dent ball. I've never seen you do this technique and was wondering if there's a reason you work the tool horizontally instead of vertically. Keep the videos coming, there's bunches of us out here who really enjoy the insights you provide.

Howdy from Missouri, Wes! I've been searching for an educational but also entertaining to watch repair channel for a while and I'm STOKED to have come across your content! I'm an aspiring instrument repair technician, and I've been lucky enough to work for a great music store (Ernie Williamson Music to be exact) that allows me to learn and practice when I'm not on the salesfloor. I truly hope things continue to grow with this channel and inspire others to see what all the fuss is about with repair!

You are right on brass dent hammering. I tell my co workers or students that wants to learn . First thing is how to hold the hammer properly, second is you hammer to the sideway action not up and down action, third is you hold the hammer at the end tail not in the middle to let the weight of the hammer head do it’s job, fourth the hammering is all in the wrist not your forearm, and fifth listen to the tapping sound on the dent balls and visual seeing where the ball is moving. Takes months to figure that out and patience but it will come. Over thirty years of doing it . That would explain part of my hearing lost 😞 on tapping on pipe all day long just to satisfy that women….😆

I see many really damaged instruments on this channel. This is a great channel! What are those musicians doing out there? It looks like they're using their instruments in karate fights....... Are they bashing each other over the heads with these things? Are they inspired by Harpo Marx?

Wes, I have acquired a trumpet from a storage locker sale. It is a H N White b flat/C trumpet that I think was manufactured in the early 1900s. It came with several issues such as the bell badly damaged along with many other dents in the tubing. Also two of the valve caps were missing. The only one that was there was the center one. After having it repaired now some of the tuning slides move but not all and none of the tubing dents have been removed. The valve caps have been replaced but they are all different. Can and are you willing to help me?

I want to ask about the dent hammer technique, I imagine how it utilizes a double or triple bounce to create the directional flow as the metal warms. Do you have thoughts that could help me as I move beyond basic introduction to this skill? I learned about circular flow from a different skill, and am new to this one. Also how the burnisher is used parallel to the tube. I have never though of that, and it seems difficult to hold in place. How can I work on that? What do I look for?

Wes. Great work! I play a Bach Strad. Cornet Model 25-62, serial number 2934, probably circa 1934-36. I'm concerned about the lead pipe - my local repair man (Elkhart trained) has indicated that the pipe is "rotting" from the inside. Could I use your email address to send you some pictures and perhaps discuss this situation. Thanks. Be well!
