It really does make a difference in the life of a trumpeter when those who are more accomplished share their techniques and wisdom. Thank you very much!

I've come to realize that this technique is recognized immediately and accepted by many . Folks usually don't remember your solo but they will remember your tone.

Love the fact that he played a ballad from "Mo Better Blues" as an example. This movie is a Jazz trumpet player maker for damn sure !

You sound fantastic, Marquis! Thanks for sharing, great explanation on how to do sub-tone! I've been trying to do this for years and after watching your video I figured it out. I'm a bit of a muscle bound lead player, but I've been working on just using just breath attack as opposed to a tongue attack, the last few months and coupled with your advice, sub-tone finally clicked for me today! You have a beautiful sound with or without this technique, but for years I admired Freddie Hubbard's use of it as a player who came up in the 1970's and wanted to add it to my playing, now thanks to you, I now can and with practice it will develop. You can teach an old dog new tricks! Thanks again, Tony Gorruso

Great stuff. btw Marquis Hill was at first playing the beautiful ballad "Again, never" composed by the great bassist Bill Lee. This theme was included in the film Mo' better blues in 1990, directed by Bill's son, Spike Lee, along other tunes also composed by Bill Lee on that same movie. Later on in 1999 the song was released on the CD Free to be of Donald Harrison.

been listening to trumpet for years i never heard of subtone! WOW! I can hear the difference when pro use it such as Nicholas Payton, Roy hargrove,...etc...you can hear that particular style in mo better blues movie with Danzel washington. What a versatile instrument! Your particular sound does come from how you hear it in your head

When trying to get a unified sound it is bad to have different playing styles. You have to have a good sound to begin with to add other stuff, and these techniques only apply to solos. Doing pitch bends is good practice though.
