In this video I ask K.O. about The Gap and what it does. This was the 3rd of several topics we discussed in a quite lengthy interview. Here is more information on The Gap stomvi-usa.com/...

I've been playing Stomvi-USA trumpets and mouthpieces for years, and wanted to share how adjusting the gap can "light up" the instrument. Recently, I rechecked my gap because I knew that my embouchure changed slightly this past year and I wanted to see if adjusting the gap would make playing even easier, which it absolutely did. What surprised me was that the same sleeve (5.5) worked great on all three Stomvi mouthpieces even though they're all pretty different in cup depth, size, etc. Hope this helps someone who stumbles upon this video (RIP Jon Ruff).

Is it necessary to have a receiver over the leadpipe? My cornet is totally smooth inside, ie mouthpiece goes straight into the leadpipe with no lip from the end of the leadpipe.

My Getzen Super Deluxe trumpet from the late '50s has a gap of 13/32" (just past 3/8") with a Bach mouthpiece! My Cannonball trumpet has 1/8 with a Bach mouthpiece. Interestingly though, my Monette C trumpet with a Monette mouthpiece has a gap of 7/32".

Hi, Jon. I purchased a new trumpet, and much to my surprise and concern, my Bach and Schilke mouthpieces appear to bottom out against the lead pipe, they don't get tight, the Bach is actually quite loose. My Yamaha mouthpieces seem to fit fine. Is there an issue with this horn ? Is this a common issue? Can this be resolved ? Should I return the horn ? Thanks Shaun.

Was it a Schilke Trumpet???

No, I've just learned that Shilke mouthpieces tend not to fit well with other brand horns. They run 1/8" longer than most others, also although they have a morse tapper, it's not necessarily the same as others. This is very new to me ! I'm thinking of trying a Stomvi Flex, they look like they might accommodate a variety of horns better. Thanks Jon, Shaun.

Yep that is true the Schilke Mouthpieces were made to go way into the Schilke trumpet receivers. My experience with Stomvi Flex mouthpieces is that if they work for you they really work. This is not only my personal experience but also that of many I have worked with. They are low risk to try as well. Best, Jon
