I just cant believe how moved I was with Mildred's journal. It captured the essence of someone knowing they are going to die. I cried a bit. I loved it.

You absolutely MUST do more individual book reviews. I was hesitant about getting Trust but I'm sold on it now. In The Distance is one of my favourite novels

Loved this book. It’s so though-provoking without spoon-feeding you all the potential musings on power, wealth, and who gets to create the narratives of our histories and why.

Thanks just finished and loved your review! I would recommend To Paradise by Hanya Yanigahara. I thought back to this book often as I read Trust. I won't comment on it either way but I think it is worth a read for sure.

I really enjoyed your review and the reading experience, I am glad I went in blind. But I had found the synopsis too elusive to pick up before the booker announcement. I really love how it played with style and narrative and tropes

It’s interesting, I was very propelled to read this quickly wanting to get to each section, weaving the story together and the fascinating reveals that came as you go forward. I liked it and was impressed by it, but then I almost immediately began to forgetting it after I was done. I read this less then a month ago, but it already seems like it was last year. It really fell away quickly, maybe because there wasn’t a nailed down narrative to anchor it in my mind. I really haven’t had this experience with a book before.

That's really interesting, and I can see this happening to me too - but I think the actual reading experience is so fun and rewarding, that I won't mind that it won't linger much after! Something I have been thinking about a lot this year is reading experience vs a book staying with me...

@@TheBarandtheBookcase Just watched your review of Trust after I had today finished Trust. I had recently read a 2-3 sentence recommendation of the book in a newspaper book section. I decided to read it with absolutely no prior information about it in terms of reviews, etc. You recommended here that might be an appropriate way to handle the book. I sensed from the blurb I read that there was a mystery aspect to it. I try not to read anything about a mystery or suspense novel before starting it. Regarding Trust, my lack of any prior information made it so much more interesting to me as a reader. I felt gullible a time or two, especially because I spent practically no time reading that the first part of the book was Bonds by Harold Vanner. I appreciated and was a little embarrassed when my “Aha” moment came later. Do you happen to know of the play “Rashomon?” The format of Trust, with the four stories, reminded me of it. Best wishes!

I just finished this book and loved it! I agree 💯 with your review! I went in blind just knowing very surface details, so learning about the stories within made this even more compelling. I had a hard time putting this down! The only thing that makes me sad is that I read a library copy! Will have to purchase this one for my shelves. Definitely a favorite for this year!

Wholeheartedly agree here and I hold Hernan Diaz in such high regard. I met him at our local Indie and he was just so authentic. This book is far and away my favorite of 2022. I also host author interviews on my IG page and he is one I'm still hoping to get! Enjoyed seeing yours.

you totally sold me on this one - i think i bought it about a month ago + started it 3 days ago + just finished it this afternoon and im so, so glad i read this because it's brilliant! i haven't felt this enthusiastic about a book in a while now and it was honestly so good to read such an intelligent novel that also did some truly interesting things with form, and as you said, questions about the very idea of narrative. totally agree re: the last section, it was definitely my favourite (idk if you've read any jean rhys but the references to her are spot on) -- anyway, thank you for putting this on my radar, certainly one of my new favourites !!

I agree with the sentiment of other commenters that you need to do more individual book reviews. This was fantastic 👏! Also...quick question..I literally have NO understanding of finance and money. I know absolutely zero about investment, stocks, bonds, etc. Will this book go over my head??? I'd really like to read it...

Thank you so much!!! And no don't be worried! He does not go into the weeds of finance, and everything involving finance is explained in a way that makes it digestible/understanding how it impacts the narratives. Definitely give it a shot!

So interesting to see your review, since I (and most of the group I read this with) really disliked it. It was so disappointing because we liked In the Distance…But the first half of this was such a slog, and the writing in the first loooong section felt so bland to me! Without the success of his first book, I highly doubt it would have been published, since it’s asking a lot of readers to sit through those first 200+ pages. I did like the last section, but the themes (and even structure, after Trust Exercise) really didn’t seem all that unique to me. And after Trump, I think we well know everything this book had to say. Anyway, my taste is usually so similar to yours, but this book just didn’t work for me, at all. But I t’s always so interesting to me when opinions differ so widely, and this does feel like a polarizing book!

This is so wild!!! I have only seen praise so far from some friends I follow online so it's interesting to hear another perspective! I think I had been missing plot from my novels lately, so it was a blast for me to read that first section, plus I was anticipating the metafictional elements that I felt suspense even when it wasn't really presented yet! I'm curious, have you read Fates & Furies by Lauren Groff? I hear it does similar things
@Elizabeth-Reads
@Elizabeth-Reads 2 года назад
@@TheBarandtheBookcase I have! And yes, you're right, it does something similar in that the second half changes POV to turn the story on its head. (I highly recommend, it's a great character study, a fun read, and Groff's writing is spectacular. She's hit or miss with me, and I think I remember you weren't a huge fan of Matrix, but to me F&F was SO much better.)
