He's been keeping me entertained since "Divine Divinity" -- so like 2 decades -- and every Larian game exceeds my expectations, they don't over promise, they nail exactly what any game NEEDS, then somehow find ways to add actual love in the creation. Never been disappointed in ANY Larian game, especially upon its release and in its time...because Larian just keeps getting more deft at making increasingly enthralling games... each exceeds the ones before!

@@go-nogo1475 Back then I played Diablo, a time later I found Divine Divinity. I loved Divine Divinity always MORE than Diablo! Even back then their world seemed MORE alive than Diablo's! I instantly saw the difference between the two and since then always looked out for Larian Games. I actually love Ego Draconis too and still to this day I feel it is a pity there was never a continuation and probably never will be since they completely turned away from third person and real time battles and switched to their turn based model where they pretty obviously found their homeground for good. I love their lore and feel the passion that flows into their games. I am glad that they finally made themselves known to the world. Before nobody ever knew of whom I was even talking. Still, I would also love to see another real time battle Ego Draconis game from them again. I play turn based too but I don't ONLY play those! At this abysmal point in time we live in today in so many ways besides gaming in the world as well, Larian is probably one of the last remaining game Developers that aren't blinded by greed and driven by their passion and are actually GREAT at it! A beam of light that shoots through the darkness that the gaming industrie has become. I just pray they remain, survive, bloom with so many gluttons probably now wanting to swallow them for cash.

Larian released a game of the decade, an instant classic. The smart thing for them, as a company, is for their next release, which will have so many eyes on it, to be an IP that they own. Having to work with a huge corporation that owns an IP is almost always a pain in the ass to deal with, and often goes sour.

@voster77hh

More precisely Larian carried through with Early Access funding of the game of a decade and fairly involved player feedback for good. Divintiy had it's own IP of a game universe and was already half way out of the door of Forgotten realms Ip licence. This Kickstarter funded game saved Larian core dev team and unlocked the Early access funding base for making BG3. There is zero reason not to quit those super risky big licenses for good. Larian already has their own universe IPs to leverage and boost with the Early Access of their next proposals. They only need to score a single hit exploting the current D&D 5e hype. Larian didn't even expect to strike full mainstream with a super Streamer / Viewer interaction friendly game and a captivating "be who you are" story that allows to fully explore different dark path. Larian can simply crowd finance and pre-sell any big project the like. Tha banks do listen, their well-rewarded crowd backers and supportive Crowd listen and trust them. There is literally nothing Hasbro could offer Larian in added benefit now. Zil. The Larian example does prove an honest Early Access process is what you truly need for outstanding quality games if you want to lead 6 carry a lastng studio success and retain the talent on board. Larian is great at Pirate economics, not Hasbro Navy economics.

This is exactly what I’ve been saying since the announcement. It’s Hasbro, Hasbro is ruining everything. I have been wanting them to sell DnD or WotC as a whole for awhile now. The greed is ruining the passion of so many people’s favorite hobby. I’m dreading the upcoming VTT(virtual table top) they are working on. Every mini in that game will become a micro transaction, new maps, tools, assets, all micro transactions. Their hand in these games are ruining it. I hate the greed of the industry as a whole. A poor trained behavior we have learned to accept ever since dlc, or micro transactions came along, and the industry leaned into, and now it’s all we see, micro transactions. Never a whole game, never completed, always day one patches, or some times games have to wait a month before a patch will fix its jankyness. Unfortunately it won’t change, until we as the consumer have to say enough is enough. I fear that as a collective we don’t have the will power to resist anymore. A trained behavior, an addiction to the system.

I don't care for D&D, I'm pretty confident that whatever Larian is cooking it's going to be good. Also, Swen pretty clearly said that one big reason he wanted to do BG3 was to leverage the IP to elevate Larian to the next level, to be able to do more ambitious projects with higher budgets and for that they needed to reach a mainstream audience. In that sense it was a well calculated move, but only a stepping stone for Larian to enable future development. I don't doubt they have a lot of passion (obviously) for D&D / forgotten realms, or that it was the main reason, but a smart move nonetheless and it paid off.

if you are into RPG worlds for 30+ years, Forgotten Realms is super cool to write storyline into it. But there is always a greener pasture next to it you can move your herd onto. Divinity, which literally saved Larian and unlocked BG3 didn't use Forgotten Realms and your really don't miss much of it. Sure, being a much smaller kickstarter, Divinity doesn't have the grandiose motion capture cinematics of a BG3. Larians next move would be a divinity with the cinematics being funded and Early Access being a solid experience for backers, they have gained the creative freedom to make anything happen. I certainly will back any Early Access proposal they do come up with.

Swen said they are still working on content for bg3 including mod support. That content might be stuff that they didn't have time to add before release or stuff they have come up with since. Maybe even Karlach and Wyll content since many fans find it lacking. Larian has been good with listening to the community in the past and added stuff in their definitive editions of their games. Both DoS 1 and 2 got one, I would be very surprised if bg3 don't get one. A definitive edition is not the same as a dlc or expansion.

I agree. At first I thought it would just be a matter of the right amount of money to get another Larian BG title, but based on Swen's tone, money was discussed, and it didn't work out. Something on the corporate side didn't align with what Swen wanted, and I'm guessing they weren't going to fund the development cycle he wanted and that meant he'd have to lay people off since he has mentioned how the BG3 team has grown a lot. There was money coming in later from the early access sales. Anyway, you've mentioned this in another video about Bioware, Drew Karpyshyn and James Ohlen, and the new Exodus project with Anthem studios. Let's not forget (or let me inform the younger audience) this has happened before when BioWare lost the Star Wars license after Knights of the Old Republic and they then went on to make the first two Mass Effect games, which were excellent. By the time Mass Effect 3 came out those original people were gone and it was hot garbage and has never recovered. Dragon Age was also a similar story, BioWare made Baldur's Gate II when they had the D&D license. We've seen this time and time again, and I understand Swen's frustration that these mistakes keep getting made. Laid off game developers sometimes don't come back like in Drew's case where he just started writing novels instead of games. Don't want this to get too long, but, just like Baldur's Gate II was much bigger and had cooler content than Baldur's Gate I, the engine was already developed so they could focus on the content. BG3 is working out all the bugs now because they can just build off that engine for any future project. They will be very capable of building a bigger game than BG3 because less time will be spent on the engine and more time can be dedicated to content.

I initially found it strange that artists were selling homemade BG3 merch left, right and center on social media freely, with no restraints. Not that I'm complaining, it certainly had a part in free advertisement for the game. I think Larian predicted this would happen and was happy to let it be. They're not interested in chasing that sort of thing like Hasbro and Disney, just focusing on making the best games for gamers of all levels. I haven't played this game yet, but I plan to once my finances are in order. If the merch was more affordable, especially for my local currency, I'd be ordering those too.

I think Swen wants to be polite and not be a part of a mob screaming at Hasbro so he took the route he did. Hasbro and WoTC are in a state of collapse and there are rumors of a sale of D&D to Tencent. I gave WoTC the last dollar they ever received from me about 5 years ago. That will absolutely not change if Tencent buys them. Hasbro complained about only being able to wring 90 million out of their contract with Larian. Swen made the comment that they had already started on DLC for BG3 and were looking at ideas toward BG4. They would/could not be doing work on a DLC without a contractual ability to do so and permission from the IP rights holder. I'm here for whatever Larian makes but it's a damn shame that greed is killing the best CRPG of all time. The game sold 15 million copies. That's about 900 million before cuts from software sellers. Hasbro made 90 million. there is no way they didn't demand more. They likely went to him with dollar signs in their eyes and said something to the effect of "You can make a game in any D&D setting you want but we want 50%". I don't blame him if that's the case. So we could have seen an Icewind Dale 3, Dark Sun, Ravenloft, or anything else and while that's a damn shame, I'm sure I'll love what they come up with.

The witcher background music makes me imagine Geralt of Rivia hunting Hasbro like it's some kind of horrific monster in a swamp, or plain. I can see it now, it's a cold icy morning in Nilfgaard, Geralt is riding through the gloom of the early dawn hours, atop his mighty steed roach the horse. He comes to a halt before an old dead tree, the wind shifts towards him, his powerful witcher senses detecting the scent of spilled blood. Warily, he starts riding again, coming upon an entire batallion of Nilfgaardian soldiers along the road, torn limb from limb, guts and shattered armor everywhere. His horse whinnies in alarm but Geralt soothes the beast and slowly dismounts. "Looks like I'm getting close." he muses to himself, as he kneels down to examine the bifurcated corpse of a nilfgaardian captain named Morvik, who many months earlier, had tasked the mutant with hunting drowners close to his camp's latrine, which sat near a river. In the far distance, the ground shakes slightly, Geralt lurches to his feet, drawing his steel sword. It was Hasbro, they always return to the site of kills to feed upon the corpses, he reminds himself. Then he see's it, charging his position, a lumbering wall of muscle and dark shaggy fur. The Hasbro resembles a cross between a werewolf, a cassuary bird, and a man, its head is bright blue like a summer sky, its eyes burning with red otherworldly rage. It shrieks as it closes the distance. "STOCKHOOOLDEEEERSSSSSHHH!" it roars! With a lunge faster than any normal man, the Butcher of Blavigan hurls himself to the side as an enormous, four fingered hand carves a massive trench into the ground, partially crushing the head of a dead horse in the process. "MYLITTLEPOOONY!" the Hasbro thunders. "Damn, you're ugly!" And the battle is joined proper, just monster vs mutant.

Swen Vincke himself has always been a supporter of delivering a full game and then moving on to the next project. We will never know for sure if the layoffs impacted Swens decision or not ( I bet it did but that's pure speculation). It is telling though that He specifically said WotC was great to work with. He never mentioned Hasbro - and we all know that the decision to fire all the people was made by Hasbro. Here's something to ease the dissapointment: Not having staff working on a BG3 expansion means that Larians next game will be in our hands sooner - and that's something I'm looking forward to.

I think they wouldn't be happy if they had to churn out DnD Games for the near future. They also said that their next big project will bei Divinity Original Sin 3 while BG 3 was still in development. Oh and a last thing. Its honestly a smart move. They can't one up their games forever. Its smart for them to pull out before they end up like bioware and bethesda. I mean seriously most people wouldn't accept a BG 4 game with less classes or a smaller scope than BG 3. But BG 3 was already a monster. Pulling away from Baldurs gate and DnD allows them to focus on games with a scope thats manageable and desirable for them.

It is simple: Hasbro thinks the Brand holds the Power - not the Studio. They think they can now profit on the Success of Larians BG3 and thus make a BG4 and Spinoffs for themself. Also, hasbro and WotC working hard on the DungeonMaster-AI to aloow Players to play whenever wherever they are - without the need of other pesky Humans, and this is where I agree, it is a hassle to play with thoose running wild all over the Places, triggering scenes without the P?arty beeing even close to be present and wildly murderhobo everyone. they simply "do not need" Laqrian anymore and also the changes in Licensing and the treatment of the Fans and Creators, even of the own Staff, makes one with all senses intact walk away asap with all you got - which is in this Case BG3 and ones own freedom. This - sadly - makes even sense for Hasbro as enough Idiots will buy now all the Merch they coff up and all the cheap shite they will produce in the wake of this to make it profitable. Just enjoy BG3 as long as you can and then look out for something else until Larian shows up again. At this moment, they have my trust after the Divinitys and BG3 - hell, I am with them from the beginning with LMK, in which I set great hopes and was really sad about it beeing sacked (In Skyrim is a Reference to that Game or better, its Demo that was shown.)

What makes me respect a lot for Swen and Larian is that besides making a generational gem of a game, they are using whatever attention they have now to also address many of the problems plaguing the games industry (for years), from layoffs, mtx, publisher and shareholders greed etc. In fact, their advocacy for more humane and passionate approach to game dev is already inspiring some studios to go independent already, like Toys for Bob. Hopefully they'll stay this way and leave long-term positive effects on the industry for years to come.

@@MistyKathrine Yes, for example. The DLC boom has exploded in the 2000's and become a norm. It really doesn't have to be. Like Larian said, they didn't want to do a DLC in the first place, just a complete game. At the end of the year they started to consider it because they felt that they HAD TO. This is a problem nowadays. Half-heartedly made expansion could've soured the success of the game, and the game really doesn't need an expansion.

Expansions -used- to be awesome. Dragon Age Awakenings, Fallout New Vegas etc were just as good (or better) than the game they were expanding from. It's interesting to watch the landscape of video gaming follow movies and start shifting based on what we choose to follow and how consumer bases split and reform. Names of writers and behind-the-scenes creators are becoming more important to the mainstream. Instead of following studios, people are following names of people who were part of those studios as they come and go, and choosing to avoid other names. And gaming consultants.

The fact is, there are systems better than 5e out there -- _if_ you are automating away all the math, which in 5e is optimized for ease at the table rather than fairness or balance. 3.5e was plagued by too much micromanaging at the table -- but I wouldn't mind rules that complicated if the computer is doing most of the heavy lifting. So if they wanna go Pathfinder 2 or whatever, I'm right there with them.

I hope Larian remains successful enough to remain independent, because the moment they get someone other than Swen or someone with his views in charge it's over for them. He genuinely cares about his company and employees, which I wish other companies would attribute Larians success with how the studio is ran. It's no wonder 90% of the games coming out lately have been awful, because companies keep firing their experienced devs or having working conditions so awful they decide to leave. Turns out retaining employees that know what they're doing and keeping them happy results in a far superior product and work efficiency, but companies would rather just inflate their revenue by laying off thousands of employees and then being surprised when the company does terribly the year after. Corporation are truly killing themselves with their insanely unsustainable short term greed.

To be honest, I thought your title was clickbait when I first saw it. However, I gave it a chance based on your past content, and wouldn't you know, I think you're right on the money. Swen said on his tweet that WOTC was great; what he didn't say is "but it's no longer great, because the people who were a pleasure to work with were fired, as Hasbro considered them expendable." And yeah, as a developer, as a human being, if they treat your friends like that, but keep asking you to make them money, you tell them to piss off. If that wasn't the case, I think Larian would at least be willing to work with another studio to continue expanding Baldur's Gate, or do an Icewind Dale game. That they just said "nope, we're done, it's your IP, we trust (read: not really) you'll do right by the fans" is telling.

I don't feel like the information available is enough to determine why no further major content is coming. One thing I do know and was already known before BG3 was announced, is that Larian don't need WotC or DnD, less now then ever. BG3 wasn't their first game to be a GotY nominee at The Game Awards, only they lost out to Breath of the Wild the previous time around. Larians money and recognition will have now soared to new heights yet again and I can't wait to see their next project. I am hoping it is Divinity Original Sin III because more of the world deserves to know about the previous entry. A while before BG3 was announced they cancelled their DoS2 spin off, but the successes of actual DoS2 were so evident that I was not worried about what this decision meant for the grander picture one bit.
