One of the reasons a lot of us older people aren't crazy about rap is because this was "Black Music" back in our day. Such incredible writing, performances, and production, and an incredible story to boot. Soul music in the sixties and seventies has never been topped since, as far as I'm concerned. Of course, I can probably say that about "white music," too. So much creativity back in the day. So many brilliant Temptations songs: Just My Imagination is so beautiful and sad. Give it a try. Ball of Confusion by the same writer/producer that did Papa Was a Rolling Stone is incredible. And also Psychedelic Shack. You will LOVE the singing and arrangements on these and other songs.

I have been told by those in the know, that musicians are obsolete, they cost too much money. We can't be concerned with things like, moving a band and all their equipment around from place to place, paying for meals and lodging, that stuff cuts into our profit margins beside we got AI to do all that and more, for cheaper. That is how the record industry thinks and why music sounds like shit.

"The Funk Brothers" were a group of Detroit-based session musicians who performed the backing to most Motown recordings from 1959 until the company moved to Los Angeles in 1972. Its members are considered among the most successful groups of studio musicians in music history. Among their hits are "My Girl", "I Heard It Through the Grapevine", "Baby Love", " I Was Made to Love Her", "Papa Was a Rollin' Stone", "The Tears of a Clown", "Ain't No Mountain High Enough", and "Heat Wave". Some combination of the members played on each of Motown's 100-plus U.S. R&B number one singles and 50-plus U.S. Pop number ones released from 1961 to 1972.

The Temptations and the Motown Sound is the defining sound of R&B and soul music. The distinctive musical style-all tambourines, driving bass lines, and gospel-influenced vocal harmonies, the best songwriters in the business and reality. The Temptations and The Four Tops are American Icons - and musical Giants. I can't imagine a world without Mowtown Music. Now, lay that hat down!
@sereneamani1713
@sereneamani1713 Год назад
I would say ONE of the defining sounds. In my life-long opinion, it was Ray Charles, Sam Cooke, James Brown, Etta James, Aretha, etc., preceded by people like Ruth Brown, Little Esther Phillips, Willie Mae "Big Mama" Thornton, and lesser-known artists (not lesser-known to me). I love MOTOWN, don't get me wrong, but there would have still been R&B & soul music.

This song reminds of my grandmother: 10 kids, a husband gone most of the time. He was not always a good man. All of the boys joined the army as quickly as they could to send money home to their mother. By the grace of God those kids turned out well. My grandfather outlived grandma by many years. What I really remember about her was how quiet she was. The truth was sadder than I will ever know. That whole family is gone now. This 68 year old white woman recognizes this story is one that can be true across all races, nationalities snd ages. Fathers: care for the children you bring into this world or this will be your story

I doubt I could be any further away from "a rolling stone", but my wife used the courts to keep me away from our son. I divorced her, because even though I avoided the four times she tried to knife me, and I slept in the spare room with a chair blocking the handle, I realized she only had to get lucky once, I had to be alert every minute I was at home. She decided if I wanted to see our son it could only be by living with her, in her mind it was all or nothing. The court believed her lies because being a soldier meant was a violent man, so they made sure it was nothing. I last saw him on his 2nd birthday, he didn't want to know me when I contacted him on his 18th birthday, I guess 16 years was enough to convince him I was the bad guy. Too many men are deprived of the opportunity to care for their children. Whilst there are still irresponsible father's out there, nobody ever wrote a song about vindictive mother's.

Glad you like the arrangement on this song. This is the genius of Norman Whitfield. He moved the Tempts into their "psychedelic soul" period, such as Cloud Nine which was the Tempts first Grammy. He later left Motown and formed his own production company, and wrote the movie score for the movie Car Wash featuring Rose Royce. Norman was very talented! I cried when he passed away.

Is it r&b? Is it funk? Is it soul? Yes. An absolute classic! Great reaction! Well done young man.

I remember well when this song was released. It blew everyone away. True classic and a gem from Motown. There is a great documentary about the Funk Brothers who were the Motown studio musicians. It’s called “Standing in the Shadows of Motown” and it is well worth the time to watch it. The Motown sound came from the Funk Brothers, but they never really got their full due. Thanks so much for reacting to this. 👏👏🥰

I was able to see The Temptations live about 15 years ago, they were great. Sadly, only one original band member remained by that point, but still so glad I got to see such a classic band in our small hometown theater.

The kind of stuff that made Motown great. I love the streetness and realness of it. The background music. Everything. What a jam!

This song meant a lot to me as a teenager when it first came out, as it described MY Dad, except I never heard about another wife, until he and Mom were divorced. Dad was married 8 tiimes, divorced 7 times. He was a lot of fun!
