THE TRUTH OF KHE SANH campaign 1968 - A turning point in the history of the Vietnam War - Cross Vietnam Truong Son road P11
According to the open encyclopedia Wikipedia, Operation Route 9 - Khe Sanh also known as "Operation Route 9" or "Battle of Khe Sanh", was a major campaign in the 1968 war in Vietnam.
U.S. documents generally record this battle as taking place over 77 days from January to April 1968, and also mention only these 77 days, which ended with the U.S. Marines. Ky (Marine Corps) stationed at Khe Sanh was rescued by the 1st Air Cavalry Division. However, for the People's Army of Vietnam (PAVN), this was only phase 1 of the campaign, phase 2 lasted from April 9 to July 25 to occupy Khe Sanh, also taking place very drastically. A total of 2 phases lasting 170 days, ending when the last American troops withdrew from Khe Sanh and the PAVN took full control of this stronghold, marking the failure of the McNamara electronic fence. Khe Sanh became the place where for the first time, the US military had to withdraw a key military base because of enemy pressure.
Because of the extremely important strategic role of this battle, this is one of the fiercest and most discussed battles. The commander of Khe Sanh base at that time was Colonel Lownds (US Marines), consisting of 1 artillery battalion, 4 Marine battalions and later received the 37th Ranger Battalion - Army of the Republic of Vietnam. Total combat troops reached 6,680 men by the end of January.
The main purpose of the People's Army of Vietnam when attacking Khe Sanh was to "diversion" for the main offensive directions in the Tet Offensive Campaign, because:
- The particularly important position of Khe Sanh is like an "anchor" in the US military map, especially threatening the Ho Chi Minh road and protecting tactical zone I. This is the command center of the McNamara Electronic Fence that the US is building to cut off the Ho Chi Minh road. Destroying this fortress, the People's Army of Vietnam will be able to uproot the "thorn" that the US intends to put on this strategic aid route.
- Focus on fighting and encircling to attract a large force of US troops to fight, making the whole US nervous to watch "The 2nd Dien Bien Phu Battle" which could change the situation of the Vietnam war...
