@@elsafralves When you're 'going Dutch', you're actually doing both of them : You're being generous for not letting the other one pay the whole bill, and you're also sharing that experience with that same person. But more importantly, 'going Dutch' and not buying stupid expensive shit you probably don't need anyway, proves you to be kinda smart, for you're left with more money to spend on more important issues, which might include helping out others. Any which way you look at it, there are no downsides to the Dutch mentality. I should know for i'm 100% Dutch and have been all my life (i'm grinning now)

It's true.... On the other hand, there is a famous saying: if you don't want to get killed, don't bike like the Dutch. We Dutch are so confident that we know what we are doing, that we think the rules don't apply to us. Or, at least..... Amsterdammers (like me) definitely are. But I would not at all be surprised if the rest of the Netherlands does exactly the same. It's essentially a "Do as we say, not as we do" message to the tourists.

Honestly, I find Dutch bikers more relaxed than Germans. With the German ones, when you hear the bell it's already too late. Just jump and pray you don't jump into them. In the Netherlands, till now I've always had to to look where they come from before deciding on where to dodge to lol

So true. As a tourist, don't even think about hiring a bike in Amsterdam. In other towns, keep an eye on your watch and get the fuck off the road at the time when the schools come out, because you will be massacred. The rest of the time it's not so bad, but you still need to have eyes like a wasp to see in all directions at once.

Even though I bike almost every day, I always found that there's some kind of etiquete or unritten code about all the do's and don'ts of biking like a dutch, and I still know I stand out biking in the netherlands (owning a mountain bike in a flat country is properly a tell) XD

You grew up in that culture yourself, so the straightforwardness is probably less obvious for you than for someone from a different culture meeting a Dutch person. (Of course every individual differs.) I'm from Belgium (Flanders), so to some extend we have still similar cultures because we're neighbors and even speak the same language. Though I have had several encounters with Dutch people where I felt a bit uncomfortable or offended. Not because they were being rude, just because of how straightforward they can be with their opinions and wer're a bit less so. And it's not always big things, sometimes it's just details. For example: Person A: Expresses idea/opinion. Dutch person reacts: "Dat vind ik niet." / "Dat is niet zo." A Belgian person might react more like: "Ok, maar..." / "Ja, maar..." / "Dat begrijp ik, maar..." / "Wel eigenlijk denk ik niet dat..." Often instead of immediately saying no, we might first aknowledge what the other person says or use some other words, just to make it sound a bit softer, less direct, we want to avoid having the other person feel like we're personally attacking them or their opnion. And it's little things like these that can make a big difference. [Of course some Dutch are less direct and you have some Belgians here and there that also have a very straighforward attitude. I'm talking about a general feeling.] I personally think straightforwardness is a good thing in itself. It's easier to know what other people think and so it can avoid unnecessary complicated situations. It's only really an issue if the straightforwardness is paired with a culture that's not like that. An example of a culture even further removed: I'm sure businesses in the Netherlands (and many Western countries) generally like to get to the point quite quickly when they work with someone else. In China that might be seen as inappropriate, when meeting a business partner, they will probably start off with some small talk and in some occasions they might first want to have an entire big dinner or some other entertainment (might take hours and hours) with you BEFORE even starting the actual business talk of money and contracts etc. Also when saying 'no', Chinese will probably word it like "I'm not sure, it might not be convenient." or "I will think about it." It's not unheard of that they might even say 'yes' just not to offend you, but then through their body language or maybe afterwards, you understand they actually meant 'no'. If for example you say straightup 'no' to a certain business offer, a Chinese person (of course depending of the context) might actually be very offended and not want to work with you anymore, because 'saving face' is super important to Chinese. [This issue is of course not only with Dutch businesses, many Western businesses might have issues with this kind of indirectness.]

Yeah, conflict avoidance in public is very important in the Netherlands, and in general people are quite well-mannered; it’s not like what you’d expect from hearing so much about Dutch directness and bluntness. That being said, once a Dutch person stops being a complete stranger to you, even if they’re still barely an acquaintance and not a friend, they’ll sometimes be much more forthcoming with opinions and advice (even if unwanted and unrequested) than people from other countries. Sure, behaviour changes a lot from person to person, and most people are not annoying, but occasionally you do get someone who makes you think “who do you think you are, telling me I’m wrong and I should do things differently? My mother?”.

An anecdote about this that I heard the other day from a non-Dutch person was that if for example you have something in between your teeth. A piece of salad or spinach or whatever, in many countries people will try to ignore it, and not tell the person about it as to not sound impolite. As a Dutch person I would instantly tell the person I'm talking to that they have something in their teeth so they can actually get rid of it. It's just a small example, but it's a lot of things like that that are so ingrained in the Dutch culture that we don't really realize that many other cultures handle those things very differently, even though they're very small in the larger scheme of interactions..

French people think French is far superior to English, so not everyone bothers to study it. It's just that centuries-old bickering from the Brits and the French. Even in Spain, not a lot who speak fluent English. Basically, the triumvirates of the colonisers has an aversion to each other's languages.

@@tania6113 nope, well Spanish is my main language, we say Holanda, and I have dutch friends who also say Holland, and no I know there's more to the country than just Amsterdam, I've been three times to several places, Nijmegen, Venlo, The Hague, Breda, Rotterdam, Utrecht, and Amsterdam and in all those places the people were super nice.

We belgians are the complete opposite. If someone would open an app to see who has to pay half a euro more, I take out my wallet and pay the bill. It is really embarrassing. In Holland Casino you see belgians in the high rollers area and there are no dutch men, literally zero. Why do you all sit on your money like that? I’m not saying throwing it out of the window like most belgians do is better. It’s just so weird that we live so closeby. But we are very different. Indonesian has adopted 3000 Dutch words some are obvious some are not. Kulkas, kalkun ,kamar less obvious is senapan which comes from snaphaan the Indonesian word means rifle. Snaphaan is Snaphaunch or flintlock in English. Common history goes back further than that. Satem and centum languages comes from Sanskrit and Latin for hundred the early navigators discovered that some Asian languages were not difficult to learn.

Ze volgend allebei half 4vwo en half 5vwo en in beide jaren worden ze gewoon goed opgenomen door iedereen. Als er iets is wil iedereen altijd wel helpen en als ze het niet begrijpen schakelen we gewoon over naar het Engels. Iedereen is gewoon aardig en zegt niks geks. Misschien komt dit ook wel omdat ze vwo doen hoor, maar het is ook maar een voorbeeld

Haha ;) Can't relate Köln to be that bad back then, but maybe the relatively short time after The Wall fell made police crack down on Eastern-European people, don't know. I can relate to your money-exchange story ;) When I visited Kyiv in 2018, I was dumbstruck about going by plane and hotels and such, so did not have a credit-card... So the (female, I might add) friend that invited me over to Ukraine paid for my hotel with her card and said that if I took enough cash (in Euros) with me to pay for the hotel, she would exchange it for Grivna's: I didn't understand what the advantage was because I had seen rates of 30 to 32 Grivna/Euro at exchange windows, but she expained that she could pay her rent and companies can get an even better deal on large sums of money. So she got a good deal when she would pay her rent in Euro's and I got a better deal then when I would have exchanged Euros for Grivna's myself. It was weird though to get my wallet out and hand her my 500 Euro's in a McDonalds... I asked her to be extremely carefull, but she didn't seem to be to bothered about walking around with something like 16000 Grivna at hand.
