Geofatboy demonstrates a NEW method for quick face lathering using shaving cream from a jar, tub, or tube. This DAB method is quick and easy! Watch an efficient every day type shave with the Merkur Futur adjustable razor loaded with a new Dovo double edge blade made in Germany. These blades are comparable to Feather Blades. This is a no-nonsense, efficient every day shave. TOBS Sandalwood is face lathered with the Simpsons Trafalgar T3 synthetic shaving brush. Then the Shave Nation Wide Stick alum block is applied, followed by a sample of George F Trumper Spanish Leather Skin Food Aftershave. Follow along and see how progressive beard reduction is performed to remove 2 days worth of beardage easily with this 2.5 pass shave. Click on "Show More" (below) to purchase the items used in this video or go to ShaveNation.com And-let us know what razor you’d like to see in an upcoming episode of Geofatboy’s Everyday Shave!

I just got into DE shaving last month. I made my own Feather+German blades trial on a Mühle R41. I started with a Feather, using Mühle Aloe cream and I got 10 shaves in (2-3 passes, usually 3) before it started dragging. My next blade was the Dovo shown here. I also switched to TOBS Tabacco Leaf, so yes, 2 variables at once. Never the less, the DOVO seemed to glide effortlessly for the first bunch of shaves, and give as close or closer shave than the Feather. Had to watch my angle, especially on the neck even more. After 11 shaves with mostly 3 passes, it is still going without signs of slowing down. I did get what I will call stick-slip somewhere after the 3rd-5th shave, and then that has gone away and I am up to 11 shaves and counting. Interested to see what the Timor, Bolzano, Persona Plat. and Mühle blades will bring when I get that far. Impressed with the Dovo after all the shaves, at least with the first one out of 10, despite the concerns about stick-slip in "the middle(?)" of the blade wear.
@geofatboy
@geofatboy Год назад
Interesting test-keep us posted of future results.
@CapristoF
@CapristoF Год назад
Update: so I retired the first DOVO after 13 shaves. I think it had at least 2 more in it, but I was cleaning the razor, had everything apart anyway and to be honest, itchy to try the next blade. I've got 6 shaves in on the Timor. You can tell it is not as aggressive as the either of the last 2 blades, but is delivering nice smooth shaves. I'd say so far, it's a good daily hauler. 6 days 3-passers to date. Fewer weepers than ether of the previous 2 blades, especially after the first 1-2 uses.
@CapristoF
@CapristoF Год назад
@@geofatboy Update 2: Got 11 shaves in on the first Timor before moving on to the Bolzano. Big disappointment, and banked the first blade after only 3 shaves it was pulling/dragging so bad. Second blade was better, giving the best shave on the 3rd run when I was traveling and did a hand lather with the Mühle Aloe Cream out of the tube. Maybe the Bolzano needs a different razor. Currently 4 shaves in on the Personna prep blue platinum. It is a slightly better balance between smoothness and sharpness than the Timor. Can't wait to move on to the Mühle and then see who to test head to head.
@CapristoF
@CapristoF Год назад
@@geofatboy Update 3: 18 shaves on the Personna blue platinum. Excellent performance the whole time. Best balance between comfort, durability and a decent shave. Best cost per shave thus far. I'd recommend it to any beginner, or for a daily work horse. I'd say it is the MVP out of the bunch. Hardly any weepers or the like, and the alum block confirmed this time and again. Seemed to shave closer with an extra day or 2 of growth, and did fine with it all the way. First shave with the Mühle blade this morning was disappointing. May have to disassemble, flip the blade and see if that helps. Was catching 1 day stubble quite a bit, was not pleasant and did not do a good job. I was expecting more. I may have to get a 10 pack, just to see if this is an isolated incident.

Nice idea if you are late but still don't want to use an electric razor. With my comeback to wetshaving, I'm still not sure if I prefer DE or SR. Probably DE since I think my straigts just can't get as sharp as a fresh feather blade. It also feels like I would need to hone a straight razor while shaving. And yes, my hair is stronger and I could shave twice a day. If just my skin would allow it.

I had not tried face lathering yet so I tried this today. Best lather shave I’ve had yet! It was slicker & more moisturizing. I’ve been using cremo or king of shaves because any lather was giving me terrible shaves. This seems to be a game changer for me! I’ll post back if it keep going well. Thanks Geo!

This a good tip for new and experienced shavers. I like soft soaps or creams because I just smear them on my face and do a quick face lather. For me, that method works better than putting it directly on the brush. There's no need for a shave stick. You also showed that adjustables aren't necessary once you find a setting that works. That's why the Rockwell 6S is my favorite. For everyday shaves, I use the R4 plate. If I have 2 -3 days of growth, I'll do my first pass with the R6 plate and finish the shave with R4.

This is a funny hobby. Things you think are things that everyone knows and most use every shave (like dabbing the face with shaving cream before face lathering) you find is a peculiar behavior not even known to the master himself. And others that you think are magnificent discoveries that will change the way all shavers shave turn out to have gone out of favor after WWII and today no modern gentleman would consider performing such a thing or worse just a "yeah, so I tried it once or twice but Nah not for me kinda thing."

If bowl lathering, one should be able to create plenty of lather by scraping out just a pea-sized amount of soft soaps or scraping out 5-6 flakes of triple milled soaps. Just distribute it throughout the bottom of a lather bowl, create a lather with a barely damp brush (synthetic might be best), but periodically extract the lather that gets lodged within the knot and rework it with a little bit of additional water until you produce (more than) enough lather for your shave. At the very least, it keeps your soaps dry, should you care to sell them at a later date.
@geofatboy
@geofatboy Год назад
By extracting do you mean pulling the lather out of the brush with your hand shaped in a circle?
@borbetomagus
@borbetomagus Год назад
@@geofatboy That's one way, but I normally lean the base of the knot on the side of the lathering bowl. I don't know if this could possibly break edge boar or badger hairs over repeated use, but my synthetic brushes still look brand new.
@borbetomagus
@borbetomagus Год назад
Also, on one of your videos (I forget which one) I thought you asked how people get their most efficient shaves -- and I thought you said you start aggressive and get less aggressive. I've found that I start with an aggressive razor and get more aggressive(!). I start (WTG) with a RazoRock Hawk V3 open-comb SE razor with a Feather Professional Super blade (which is thicker and extends more than the standard Professional blade), then switch (XTG) to a Classic Shaving Occam's Razor SE adjustable razor -- on setting three with a Feather Professional Super blade (which they don't recommend) -- with considerable stretching on my neck. I then switched (ATG) to an iKon Tech with a Feather. I find switching through these particular razors in this fashion plows through existing (or remaining) beard growth far more comfortably, than if I were to start out with the iKon Tech throughout the shave, which would uncomfortably tear through beard growth, if done too soon. I recently saw a video of an old Japanese barber doing something similar with a Feather DX, then switching to a Razorine-like razor (with considerable stretching). At this stage (if one still had minimal stubble) one could use an iKon Tech on an un-lathered face with minimal discomfort. One certainly couldn't shave multiple days' growth on an un-lathered face (with such a razor) without considerable discomfort. When you use a straight razor, have you ever started a shave with a thicker grind (near wedge, quarter hollow) and end with a thinner grind (full hollow, extra hollow)? I guess I liken this method to playing golf, since certain clubs are better at handling some golfing situations than others.
