I need more clamps so I can save more money! I do the magnet on bolt thing and have been doing it for a while - so useful. I plan to try out the sandpaper dowel trick and the rubber bands on the squeeze clamps for edge banding. Haven’t thought of those and those look really useful to me.
Rubber band clamps something every kid that built a model airplane used 50 years ago. Don't ask me how I know this . Also the dowel sander also works with scotch bright to polish holes made in metal pieces.
For stronger, more durable rubber bands you can cut up used inner tubes. They come in all different sizes and you can cut them radially to get rings at whatever width you need or cut them along the circumstance into long strips which are handy for clamping odd shapes. Make friends at a local bike shop and you can probably get an assortment of busted tubes for free or cheap
Loved turning the dowel into a flap disk. Definitely a game changer for handsanding. As for sandpaper on painting stick, I apply sand paper on a reciprocating saw blade without the teeth and makes quick work out of sanding in between areas. Just don’t go full blast with saw.
Hey Izz! I notice that you incorporate quite a bit more humor into your vids since you got your back fixed. Funny how that sort of thing helps one's disposition.
These are some awesome tips! I never thought of the rubber band around pliers before. I was a mechanic for 18 years and wish I had known about this trick before now; I changed careers two years ago.
These tips are pretty cool! I keep several bondo spreaders around for glueing and for applying raised stenciling compounds (I usually use water putty), so I’ve actually used the tip with the pinking shears. Recently, however, on a trip to Dollar Tree, I noticed a new cake decorating section and bought a few of their thin, flexible icing spreader thingies (I don’t bake, so I’m guessing at the intended use). A couple have varying zigzag edges and there are a few different sizes and shapes to choose from. Just thought I’d share. Y’all have a blessed and happy new year! 😊
Thanks - I was going to mention the dollar store about the cake spreaders - already had the grooves in them the dollar store is a great place to get cheap things like plastic glasses for mixing epoxy, wooden stirring sticks, playdough for sealing edges on epoxy molds, etc
I use scraps of plastic laminate (countertop material), with tablesaw slots in them for spreading glue. Costs nothing. The elastic band tricks were pretty good!
Great tips! I created sanding files with various grits, and I out the grit number on each stick so I know which one it is. I used spray adhesive instead of velcro. They work great for tighter areas. I should get some rubber bands.
Thank you for this video, for sharing all these really surprising ideas, a big thank you, it will be useful to me in my workshop. Take care of yourself. Happy New Year😄✌
Mag switch great for steel bolts, for s/s bolts dab CA glue washer/nut together. Put masking tape on one side of spanner to stop nut falling through. Put masking tape on sanding stick before using double sided tape/ spray glue to stick sandpaper on makes replacement easier.
As a professional mechanic I actually have a squirt bottle of dish soap and water at my toolbox. It’s great for slipping hoses back on cars and you can spray your hands and wash with it if you’re not near a sink. Lots of great tips in this video Izzy!
@@binnsbrian because any overspray and mess cleans itself up instead of leaving a puddle on the work table like in the video. Evaporating quickly also means the surface is only slippery while you slide the pieces together and then friction will hold it together while you tighten the clamp. If it dries too quickly just spray a little more right before you push the pieces together.
Office rubber bands work well with so many out of the office scenarios. That sandpaper flapper is also cool. Used many variations of those back in my machine shop days working on various internal diameters.
Izzy you are like the Dali Lama of shop tips. There are lots of tips are posted on the web that help you do one thing once in a while. But your tips are actually helpful every day....or at least every week or two. That edge banding tip alone was awesome. No more strips of tape hanging off my sleeves.
Rather than a jar and a brush to lube the hose and blast gate, I always have a spray bottle with water and Simple Green handy. I use it on my water stones and ceramic Shapton stones, makes a good applicator, slick enough.
9:16 You can also use old sanding sponges wrapped with sand paper. It works well on tight spaces & wonders on contours. Sand paper lasts much longer than the sand sponges & costs less, plus some styles have different angles which can also be beneficial.
Nice collection of tips, very useful.🙂 One thing I have found myself having trouble with is how to even out curving contours, there must be a better way that using larger radius on the cylindrical sander.
I use to watch your videos years ago but you disappeared? For some unknown reason I thought of you and your videos and ,HERE I AM! Love your videos. I have learned a lot from you.
the pinking shears is a great tip. I usually take triangular, square or round small files and do that to a credit card.. Awesome. Been doing many of the other tips for years, especially the sanders.. The rubber bands I have been doing for a while when I saw Rockler's .. I agree too much for what it is.
such a refreshing change from all the videos from "Supposed" experts, promoting all the latest expensive rubbish that even commercial makers never buy.
0:26 Tips like this always make me chuckle: I think my mother had scissors like that in a drawer somewhere, but I’m guessing most people don’t - just by a few plastic glue spreaders, they’re very cheap and last forever? Surely? Just found one on Amazon for 62 cents. Of course there’s nothing wrong with this tip, but if you’re in a pinch, an old bank card and a knife to cut some teeth will do.
As always, nothing but great, I am Pushing 70 years young, woodworking since 8 years old, full time since retiring 11 years ago and I always seem to learn something new watching your videos so it is true when they say, when you think you know it all it is now your turn to learn all over again. Excellent tips...
That is awesome! Thank you so much for the comment. I always say i could do this for 500 yrs and still learn something new almost every day. Happy New Year
Thanks for the tips. I was about ready to buy a bunch of 'bandy clamps' until I added them to my cart and saw the price. Never mind! I used rubber bands and cheap spring clamps. They worked great and saved me $$$$
I put some rubber band edge clamps in my cart for a project where I need to do a lot of edge banding, but haven't paid yet. Now I can empty my cart and use the 50 spring clamps I already own. brilliant idea! Thank you
Brought to you by the rubber tree plantations & rubber band manufacturers everywhere! Seriously though, these are things that you dope slap yourself over because once to see them, well, why didn't I think of them😋
What I love about you is your tips and tricks are what you’d think would be the obvious. What I can’t stand is the “dang it! Why didn’t I think of that” thanks for making me feel stupid 😂
Nice to wake up in New Year and find some vefy useful ideas. This beginner home reno nube has tun into all those scenarios. Today I'm retreading stairs but I just rebuilt antique kitchen chairs with broke off dowls and missing cross arms. The dowls are elongated instead of round. I had to burn brain power figuring out a fix
I use all of those except the dowel flap sander trick. But I will definitely be adding that to my wood working tool box when next needed.😎 Awesome video.
Great tips, but unfortunately I won’t remember them as I can ever remember anything. I see cool projects being made all the time, or have an idea of a project I want to build, but you think I can remember one of them? I can’t even remember how I made projects in the past!
Well I guess I'm now adding a pack of rubber bands to my tool box... Never would have thought of that at all.. one of those duh moments 🤦 now we can buy more clamps with all the money savings 🤣 never can have too many clamps! Thanks 👍
Got to your channel and subscribed right away, your videos are entertaining and smart and get me to say to myself why didn't I ever do this it that... Thanks man and keep up the good work
all those credit card offers, used up gift cards or expired cards make great glue spreaders and they are FREE! also can be cut with pinking shears or trimmed to fit odd shape or size Tyler
I just subscribed because of this video. I am not a woodworker yet. But it is something I want to try as I am getting ready to retire. These tips will help me keep the cost down while I figure out if this is what I really want to do. Thank you.
