In this video I show you a more unusual rebatching technique that can be used to turn old soap scraps into new soap. I’ve had better results with this technique than the normal rebatching method, although this time, the soap didn’t turn out in the best way possible :)
If you've been around for a while, you might remember this 'no heat' rebatch soap I did almost a year ago: • No heat rebatch soap -... .
This technique is basically the same, but made with the hot process method. Hot processing this soap allows us to add more soap scraps, and since they are being completely melted, corrections can be made if you made a mistake with the soap that you want to rebatch.
Thank you for watching!
This rebatching technique entails melting and blending old soap scraps with a fresh batch of soap to get a more smooth consistency to the soap batter. This is the recipe I used:
Recipe calculated with: soapee.com/cal...
150 g soap scraps (50% of oil weight)
108 g olive oil (36%)
18 g oat oil (6%)
12 g castor oil (4%)
84 g coconut oil (28%)
60 g shea butter (20%)
18 g cocoa butter (6%)
(total oil weight 300 g)
5 g citric acid
105 g distilled water
44.9 g sodium hydroxide (41.9 g if not using citric acid)
28.6% lye concentration, 5% superfat)
other additives:
1 tsp honey
1 tsp sodium lactate
6 g lavender essential oil
½ tsp ultramarine violet
½ tsp titanium dioxide
+some extra distilled water to mix with the honey and disperse the colorants
Cure the soap for about 4 weeks before using it on your skin.
○ Citric acid information
When citric acid and sodium hydroxide lye (NaOH) are combined, sodium citrate is created. Sodium citrate works as a chelator in soap.
A chelator traps metal ions such as calcium and magnesium that can be found in tap water.
These metal contaminants can cause rancidity and soap scum in handmade soap.
A chelator binds to these metals so that they can’t bind to the soap molecules. This way the soap won’t react with them and the soap's lather improves + shelf life increases.
Citric acid does not lower the pH of soap. Instead it consumes some of the lye and increases the superfat. Add 6 g extra lye for every 10 g of citric acid added to a soap recipe if you want to keep the superfat % at the same level.
How much citric acid should be added to soap?
Usage rate in bar soap is 1-2% of the oil weight.
How to use citric acid
Add citric acid to the distilled water and dissolve completely before adding the lye, or make a separate solution of citric acid and distilled water and add to the oils.

Thanks so much for sharing this!! I've tried rebatching in the past, but the resulting soap ranged from not-so-great to only ok. Using your method, I was able to rescue a batch of cold process soap that I wasn't super happy with and turned it into a seriously lovely soap that both smells AND looks great! What a brilliant idea for rebatching! Thank you! ❤️

This is SOOO cool, I have been going out of my mind trying to figure out what to do with 3 loaves of attempted GM Aloe and expensive whipped rebatched fails, but soft like paste, but crumbly. I did do some embeds on the fly with cool effects and Melt and Pour Creations, plus the softer the soap, the older gen love it because it's not to hard, I put it in little creations of my soft bath sponges, and they love it, but this is genius. Kinda like your Genius Soap Scrap addition to Soaps..Anywho, your lovely and Make it look so easy.. how do you get all those angles & editting while your making your Soap?? Okay, i'm sorta confused about the citric acid, if you use distilled water is it still necessary to use citric Acid as a chealator or is that just to be safe? It's great i Dont use distilled water out of a plastic bottle or container, ecspecially in the summer, the plastic melts into the water, so I only use distilled water from Boxed Water, it's goes through a 8 step purification even after its distilled plus it gives back to the environment. And it's the best water ive ever tasted other than pure rain water purified. So, i was just wondering, but it seems it would cause more lather and bubbles, so I'm going to add it in.. Did you go to School for chemistry or a Natural skin Care School, i'm in one now. Almost done, not that i need a piece of paper, but understanding how the ingredients react together is important. You should write a book. You'd be great at it oh, by the way, I just got my Wild Foraging book 4 North America, it's Amazing!!! Would you like a Copy I know you already know alot about foraging and Herbs and Botanicals, but i could send you a PDF if youd like... Medicinal plants all around us everyday thats better than any pharmacy meds for every kind of health issue, food, and skin and hair health and it's almost lost to history. If you'd like a copy just let me know. As a Holiday Gift..

Glad you found some of the answers you were looking for! But yes this is very similar to that previous video with the soap scraps☺ I only have one camera, so every time I want a new angle, I reposition the camera. I try to get as many angles as I can to make the video more interesting. When I’m done filming I put the clips together and edit them in adobe rush. It’s really simple and easy to use and great for beginners too☺ That’s so interesting about the water that you use! Citric acid is always optional, but I do recommend it, since it has so many benefits. I learned to make soap by reading books mostly, and also by trial and error, but it’s a great option to go to a school, congratulations for almost being done! I really love foraging and learning about botanicals, that’s so kind of you to offer the book, if you want you can send it to my email sara@tellervo.fi Thank you very much❤

Very cute puppy. I have a theory about dog ppl and cat people, I think dog ppl have been though a lot more trauma in their life and cat people have had a pretty relaxed life. Dogs need more attention like very traumatized people do and I think they both give each other the level of attention needed to heal from their pain. And they understand that dogs need more attention, more loving, walking, and cat people who have not dealt with a lot of emotional pain even though they might think that they have, they really haven't, they might feel lonely but don't feel like they need to give the level of respect and understanding to their pet. They just don't want to feel completely alone. But someone who has been through a great deal of mental emotional and physical pain understand a dog who needs more attention More Loveeven if it means having to bundle up in the winter time to take them out for a walk to go to the bathroom dander stand that they need that loving attention they need that exercise they need to feel that freedom and so they are willing to make those sacrifices. Cat people don't want to feel so depended on by a pet. They want a pet but they want a self-sufficient pet.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts Nicole! So interesting to read about your theory and in depth analysis☺️ It is true that dogs need a lot more care and cats are much more independent! I love the idea of the dog and owner healing each other💖

Hi Sara. I was about to make this recipe but I don't have oat oil. if I wanted to replace it with rice oil, how much should I put? and then I wanted to ask you, did you calculate the amount of soda based on the total amount of oils including waste, or only on oils without waste? I ask you precisely if you wanted to customize the recipe. and one last thing, if you want to double the doses, does citric acid double? a thousand thanks, and sorry for my english but i use a translator
